In previous postst, I've been chastized for referring to Cocteau Twins as The Cocteau Twins by band Nazis. The times I have used The in front on the name, I have done so unconsciously. I recently read Robin's most recent interview where he did the unspeakable and referred to the band as The Cocteau Twins. Hey come on people, let's just be a little less nit pickey and respond more to what's being communicated.

Hi, Av.

Don't sweat it; nobody really, genuinely gives a flying fuck about the "The".

It really is a big joke.

Nice to see you around, anyway.

Do you call The The, The The The???

See what I mean?

I don't call The The anything. ;)

I think at first I did take it as a joke but after some posts, it became a little more clear to me that some people did take exception to the "The" useage.

And dave, "No". It is just easier to cognitively slip and put a The in front of bands when referring to them. It requires much more effort to think, "The The The". I'm sure you're probably joking but emails and posts makes it sometimes hard to read intentions behind them.

Some people do take exception, but you know they are just being obsessive-compulsive.

Even the ex-members of the band itself often use the prefix "The", which for me, invalidates all argument.

Seriously, it's stupid--who cares?!

I still love the Cocteau Twins. Love it or shove it.

I jest, I'm on your side. I've suffered at the hands of these Nazis too!

One modern example are Delays. Everyone calls them The Delays to the extent that the band have even started calling themselves "The Delays"!!

But as Andylama said "who really cares"?!?

You are of course assuming that the author of said article actually quoted Robin word for word and didn't just paraphrase what he wrote into an article :D

I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Guthrie also doesn't give a flying fuck whether or not you use the "The" prefix. Probably would rather you ask about something that's a 'going concern'.

Still only caring just enough to type this,

Andy

There should be a rule where if you don't capitalize the T than it is ok, like "the Cocteau Twins" then the the wouldn't be part of the actual name.

That doesn't make sense.

it's a way to sneak out when you get caught putting the "the" in front of cocteau twins, you can say "ah, but I didn't capitalize the the so I was referring to the Cocteau Twins not The Cocteau Twins," sort of

I was trounced on the original 4AD listserve when I misspelled Liz's last name. Oh how my face turned beet red! I thought I'd forever be :toilet:

So, I can empathize with your plight. Yes indeedy! ;-)

as in "The R.E.M" and "The Aerosmith"??

:lmao:

But if they were REMs or Aerosmiths?? The fact it's twins plural complicates things. I think it's OK to use 'the' in gramatical terms as the definite article ie. 'look at the sheep', 'look at the ducks' or 'look at the Cocteau Twins'. It is also quite correct gramatically to use 'the' to indicate uniqueness. It would be incorrect however to capitalise the 'The' as that would make it part of the name.

I don't think gramatical rules apply to swearing - it's part of the reason for it as even if people aren't offended by the words they'll be offended by the poor grammar!

Sorry, Dave...I've been in a "write anything for the sake of it" mood today...much like any other day, I hear you mutter, but even moreso today.

It's a version of Tourettes, I tell 'ee.
