I've only ever met one of my heroes and that was David Sylvian. I couldnt speak I was in such awe.

Did I tell you about the time I bumped into Jamie Lee Curtis in New York one night me and my brother went out for a walk?

In 1977 I had a brief convesation with Christine McVie. She is the only famous person to whom I have spoken.

I'm hopeless with famous people....god knows what I'd be like with you all.

in 1984 it was the York Rock Festival, and I knew one of the security blokes, who let me backstage, where I met Pete DeFreitas and Will Sergeant from Echo and the Bunnymen, which was pretty cool - especially as I was only 14, and they were the first famous people I'd ever met. I did almost meet Kirk Brandon, but he ran onto the stage.. tsk. Ian McCulloch was having none of this meeting his fans lark though.

Yeah...apart from, y'know...it being Barry White and everything.

Damn Phil, where's the love for good 'ole Barry?

Phil clearly doesn't grasp the cult/camp appeal of old Barry.

I couldn't care less about his music, but to me, he's an icon.

ANY 350 pound man who can walk out onto a stage, say some bullshit pseudo-romantic get-in-your-knickers talk, and have nubile young women squeal with delight and fling aforementioned knickers at him...that guy is a hero in my world.

Right...but it wouldn't make you buy his CDs, would it? And I can't see hero worship by women being high on Jeek's priority list, either.

I mean, add 250 pounds to Justin Timberlake....hero or no?

Are you kidding?! Not a chance. I can't even name song one by that guy.

And I can't see hero worship by women being high on Jeek's priority list, either.

Does the concept "target audience" ring any bells? Besides, I'll bet there is a minority of gay men who think Barry White is wonderful.

I mean, add 250 pounds to Justin Timberlake....hero or no?

Only if that 250 pounds takes the form of an angry sumo wrestler sitting on his face.

I'll give you that one, it is a Black American thing.

I agree with Andy, he is an icon. I went to see Rick James for the same reason. He was fresh out of rehab. My goodness.

Cool avatar, thoughtstv. Looks like its from the Dalis Car "Judgement is the Mirror" video. Love that video, it is so deliciously 80s with the video discs, skinny ties, and all :)

It was an opportunistic thing. When I worked with a music distributor in Montreal, we got promo tix to a TV variety show that had Barry White on as a guest. I grabbed a CD from our inventory and took it with me. We were allowed to go to the "green room" after the show which is where the picture taking and CD signing took place. I'm not a huge fan or anything. Maybe one of these days I'll sell it on eBay or something...

i saw dale earndheart jr at a bar in north carolina last march on a business training trip.
one of the local girls in the training was squealing about someone that looked like him; i had my camera with me and about a bottle of merlot in my blood and i couldnt see straight; it took a while to "see" him but when i did i snapped a few photos on the sly (read: no flash). they didnt turn out that great, unsurprisingly. no flash and a stumbly pair of feet makes it difficult to pull off a good photo.
haha.
it was an odd sighting.
...and i wonder if he was drinking budweiser...

lol. :P

I guess it's the right moment to tell about the time when I met Liz.

It was November 1986, I was 17. The (sorry) Cocteau Twins were playing in Paris, at the Elysée Montmartre. We went to Paris with 2 other high-school friends, very much into the Cocteaus too. I remember, LET had just been released and we were mad about it. The day the concert took place, we just kept wandering around Montmartre, just obsessed as we were about the concert that was going to take place. Then we thought we had to buy flowers for Liz. Just imagine we were 17, CTs were our true idols (like you can have idols when you're that young) and we thought something great had to happen.
So we went to a flower shop on the Rochechouard boulevard and sought arum lilies, but all that we could find were white lilies. So white lilies it was. We went back towards the venue, and there, just across the road we saw that tiny silhouette, walking on the pavement, heading towards the back entrance. We shouted "Liz", and she turned her face towards us. We reached her, we were blushing so hard, but so wash she, and gave her the flowers. We asked if we could spend some time talking to her. She said she was going on rehearsal, but that we could talk after the concert, later that night.
The show was emotionally amazing. And after wards, we stayed inside the venue and Liz came and joined us. She was as intimidated as we were. She said that in a few weeks time the band was going to tour in Japan and that she was really excited by this. We tried, in our simplistic English words to explain the emotions that her voice raised in us. We spend time trying to translate "la chair de poule" (we didn't know the phrase "goose pimples" at that time, so we talked about chicken, female chicken (hen, yes, I know, now) and other trifles. We've laughed a lot. We spend about 20 minutes talking and joking.
That night, Liz was joyful, lively and very friendly.
I thought it was time to tell this little anecdote - for I may understand the Coachella cancellation related anger, but I can't forget what an incredible artist Liz is, and, to my very limited knowledge, a lovely person, when I met her.
Funny bit aside. Simon Raymonde seemed pretty pissed that night, so when the three of us left the venue, and we bought those huge LET posters, Simon told the seller "They have to pay for this!", which was a bit rude a comment at the moment (we had bills in our hands - we were obviously not thieves) but which is part of the memories too.

This was 20 years ago, my friends? I can't believe it.

I had a very brief conversation with Ms. Fraser about a year ago.

Me: A pound of potato salad, please.

Liz: Yes, sir.

Me: Thanks.

Liz: Anything else today?

Me: No, thanks.

I met the Cure in 1986 during the Standing on the Beach tour. The were letting groups of kids in after the show at the Northrup at the UofM. I went backstage and they were all sitting there chatting with some fans and I thought 'I dont know what to say' so I just said 'hi' and asked them all to sign my shirt and they did. I grabbed a beer and left.

I also met Love and Rockets. They were playing at First Avenue for a twenty-one and older show and I was sixteen or so, so I hung around back until this van pulls up and the three of them get out. I yelled to Kevin Haskins and I said " really want to see you guys but you have to be 21 to get in". He said ok and we walked in the backstage door and someone said "who's this?" and Kevin said "he's with us" (!!) and I got to see them play!

If it would have been Liz or Robin I would have made a fool of myself or started to cry..or both.

That is so cool, Halation. Kevin Haskins is a total sweetheart and gentleman. I did some promo work for Love & Rockets last album and got to hang out with them backstage a few times. All 3 of them are very friendly, approachable, and appreciative of their fans. Class act
