FCC has assumed the mantle of my "CT Turkey".

Having held the title for many years, Garlands has slipped to number two.

this is tricky cos i haven't really been listening to several of those with any kind of regularity. ok, go ahead, call me a heretic and beat me with birch twigs. (what, you will?? ;) )

I had to pick Victorialand. It is actually my favorite album. It is so beautiful that it hurts to listen to it. Whenever I hear it, it just gives me this overwhelming feel of melancholy. I am very sensitive to music, so I have to be careful sometimes. I can listen to it once and a while with out feeling sad, but those times are rare. Does anyone else feel this way, or understand what I mean?

I think I can relate RE: "Victorialand". There's a line from an NME review for the "BBC Sessions" where the writer talks about "...wierdly wintry passions...". Something about that turn of phrase really nails "Victorialand" for me.

I'm kinda surprised by the big vote for "Garlands" on the poll... granted it's a debut LP and all, and Will's bass style was different then Simon's, but there's some classic material on there.

It was a toss-up between Victorialand & The Moon and the Melodies as I only very seldom listen to them to remind myself of why I don't listen to them (dull dull dull). I picked Moon because I have actually gone at most 3 years without listening to it whilst Victorialand normally manages a listen once a year - at least it's short!

My pick was Head over Heals...and by a mile...followed closely by Pink Opaque..but I generally don't bother with HoH, I have the BBC recordings which I like better than the respective tracks on HoH. My favorite is Tinderbox...

"Head Over Heels" seems like a real transitional LP to me... some of the material, like "In Our Angelhood", is reminiscent of Garlands, and other stuff on there, like "Sugar Hiccup", seems to light the way towards the developments that would take place on Treasure... it has some of their finest cover art, to be sure! A bit off-topic, but the 23 Envelope LP packaging was almost as much of an enticement for me early on as the music when I first was discovering CT. It definitely created this total aesthetic, the imagery matched the music, etc.

You don't know how I'm resisting the temptation of replying to your HOH slur, but I've decided not to reply to opinions (unless that opinion is a favourable one about Nick "Couldn't Get A Pub Gig On The Strength Of That Material" Cave).

BTW, that lead guitar gig I mentioned to you is still in the works. I'll chat to you by mail or on Steph's server, m'boy.

Aye! Listening to it right now. I've got all my CT on MP3 on my hard drive here at work to help pass the time...

For some reason, I think my answer is Head Over Heels. Honestly, I have no justifiable reason, because every time I DO listen to it, I am completely in love with it. It's definitely one of their most brilliant records, but I just rarely put it in the player. I listen to Garlands more, perhaps because it's so twisted and full of that young punk angst. In a bad mood and want to feed it? Listen to "But I'm Not."

LOL! The la-la-la-la-la's at the end are cool, also. I think it's the instrumentation I don't dig. It lacks that awesome ethereal quality that a tune like "When Mama Was Moth" has. It just sounds bit (I know this is sacrilege) faux-cocktail band at the Hilton Airport lounge-esque... ermmm... or something?

Hehe...what a stir I've caused, you know I didn't say HoH was bad BTW...this thread is about what we listen to least. I listen to BBC, Stars and Topsoil and Pink Opaque, which leaves only a few songs strictly on HoH, that I like alot, namely When Mama was Moth and I don't mind Glass Candle Grenades...I pretty much always skip Multifoiled.

I don't disagree with what you all like about it...experimental, transitional etc , but a little like mborum, I just don't find myself putting it in much. I certainly am not reacting to other's least listened to(Phil)...its what you don't like to listen to..so what..saying I don't bother putting in HoH means just that...it isn't some proclamation about what is and isn't good. I just listened to both Garlands and HoH this morning after my first post, didn't change my basic urge really too much.

I'm not smitten with nostalgia for this album, if I had it back in 83 and wasn't a mere 10 years old at that time, it may be alot different, but that isn't the case. As a late comer, the earliest CT has grown on my steadily, I even bought HoH last year...anyway, there it is...

I also see what people don't like about Garlands...I put it in more than HoH tho and when I'm in the mood for that(quite apart from all other CT)...BBC also lessens my urge to put in Garlands too...I like the hard edge for what it is though in Garlands....feels like it ought to be the Bladerunner soundtrack or something.

PS. KC is no toronto..but with temps from 0 to 25(F) in the past few days (our usual winter low) it aint warm. I could never live somewhere with no seasons...I love the radical change of seasons and storms here on the plains.

Garlands does indeed rock! My fave CT LP changes depending on mood. As mborum pointed out, Garlands suits an angsty frame of mind. Victorialnd is really good for napping or chilling, and Treasure is a good soundtrack to read or paint to.

Yes, but only in my spare time (sigh). Haven't ever pursued it as a career option, as the whole schmoozing thing of networking at gallery openings and such is kind of a drag to me. Maybe if I cut off my ear...?

In all seriousness, it's primarily a creative outlet for myself at this point. The big thing I wrestle with is doing the 40 hour work week and still finding the steam to do some good work. I'm really into the abstract colourfield type of stuff, everything from Pollack and Rauschenberg to Motherwell and Kline, and the 23 Envelope CT designs. :)

:D Got me there Luci, heh heh...I know, dynamic weather and all that, I saw a totally cool water spout down there, just as this tornado was touching down in the water(off in the distance :) ), you could see the darkness of the water starting to be sucked up into it, there in the glare of the sun....it was quite stunning to watch. No, thing is, I like to have deathly cold weather a little bit, it doesn't get cold enough for me down south. For me, the heat of the south is far more a pain..I get quite grumpy in heat...hehe...

sorry I'm off topic, I did remember one more thing, Phil, last time we had a chat about this you were talking about the guitar lead in Angelhood, I definitely think it sounds pretty cool, I don't dig her singing in that tune tho. I guess it seems kinda of choppy, but I was actually grooving to her wailing in M&D at the end there ..

Oh ma god, I absolutely adore that song!!! It is so sexy and dirty. It is kind of cocktail lounge-esqe, but that is why I love it so much. HOH is actually one of my favorite albums. I mean "In our Angelhood" and "If Mama was Moth" alone make it one of their best, in my opinion anyways. And I also really like Garlands. It is so raw and punk rock.

It's true... you've got that huge Chinatown, the Danforth Greek scene, a large Carribean community, all those Russian folk over by Queen/Ronces, etc. Toronto rocks!

Ah well, I try to see the world, ya'know? To be fair, I should mention that Mrs. mattyboyo1 grew up in Toronto, and I spent a lot of time up there winning her heart before stealing her away back down here to Boston.

Now... standing on the glass floor at the top of the CN Tower... that gives me the heebie-jeebies.

On a different note, I had a good laugh this morning when I was driving to work. MIT radio (WMBR 88.1 for those in the Boston area) has a great morning show called "Breakfast Of Champions", and the Friday morning DJ, Jon, is my fave. He plays loads of 4 AD type stuff and other quality tunes as well (this morning he played a 15 minute epic from the new Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds LP, "Nocturama" that rocked my socks off)... so, in any case, he announced that at ManRay (this local Goth/Industrial-type dance club over in Cambridge) they are having a "Miss Gothic Massachusetts" pageant tonight.

Miss Gothic Mass website (http://www.missgothicmass.com/)

Apparently these pageants have been going on in other cities for a while, guess Boston is behind the times. Looks to be a car-crash of fashion on parade. ;)

I almost want to go, just to see the big hair and fabulous black outfits - torn between that and checking out Johnny Marr's new band at the Paradise...
