something that's always bothered me was the way in which cocteau twins 'left the scene' as it were. i mean, yeah i sort of saw it coming but perhaps i really refused to see it in the face of my own denial. i'll admit that i was destroyed when they announced their break-up and i'll admit that i felt cheated in some way, as though they owed us something much more formal and finite.

although many years have passed since their demise and i've had time to ponder my initial reactions, i'm glad they went their separate ways for their own personal reasons. this validates it for me but i still long for something more finite, something more definite, something that says goodbye. how about announcing that their upcoming release was going to be their last one? it would have given me time to prepare myself for the inevitable that i already saw coming. but i know that when disillusion strikes in a band, it's not always a timely thing, and i'm sure it wasn't expected or easily avoided.......i still just wish i had more time to prepare!!! and that beautiful, tension-filled music remains unheard.

.............leave it to a writer. *sigh*........i know that feeling very well indeed.........it seems in retrospect, that i'd just gotten a good firm hold on that amazing SOUND,......when i looked up from the headphones .THEY WERE GONE. i've never really deep down felt it should have happened that way. that it SHOULD happen at all is not my point.....if you gotta go, you gotta leave. but with a bit of a wind up......maybe a killer ep to say goodbye,.....
it was kind of like wakeing up in the morning and finding your long time lover gone without a trace. the anology i think is a good one...........a good bye note would have been a touch more elegant.

Personally i'm enclined to believe that a sudden departure is for the best. Preparing yourself for the departure of a 'loved one' is just prolonging the misery. Deal with it afterwards, dont spend more time dealing with it BEFORE it's gone.
Callous is my middle name.
(actually it's Wesley but we wont quibble) :D

At least we got Stars and Topsoil as a greatest hits I suppose.

I suppose I have to give them credit for going out on top of their game as well. Take The Cure, for example: Robert's constant proclamations of "This is the last Cure LP, we really, really, really mean it this time..." kind of rub me the wrong way (go to the Cure's web site and the last post says they are now working on a new LP, so go figure). That, and the endless re-releases of various Greatest Hits packages... kinda cheapens the legacy. I do sort of wonder what the sessions were like for the last (unrealized) CT LP when they disbanded... do you suppose it got to the point where Robin and Liz couldn't be in the same room anymore?

I am also very sad that they are not together anymore, but they were not together when I started listening to them, much like all the other bands I really like (Bauhaus, Dead Can Dance, Skinny Puppy, The Smiths, etc.). I am really sad that I will never get to see them live. Oh well, I am a youngun and I have gotten used to it. :(

Well we got the BBC sessions release actually, which added alot for those of us who weren't listening and able to catch them when they aired...

although the beauty for just the cure is that they get re-inspired, like their 2000 release 'bloodflowers' was inspired by mogwai's 'young team'.. the greatest hits was being pushed by their former label elektra, and the bonus acoustic disc was purely funded by the band for the fans. their new cd and robert's solo are going to be legendary and worth the wait.. (ross robinson fall 2003!)

Yes. There's one thing that I still do not have when it comes to my feelings about the breakup of Cocteau Twins, and that's closure. You really described it well, Zed. It's hard enough to lose a lover or even a friend when you know that it's coming, even if you support their reasons why. I mean, one could move away for their career or something, and while you'd be supportive of their decision, it's still hard to see them go. But to just leave in the middle of an album?!? It DOES feel like you've woken up one morning to find your lover gone. Even if they tell you that they're leaving, it's still easier to know when! I mean, maybe not at the time, but when you look back you can see their point of view much easier.

>sigh< :( Oh well....

Ian

I expanded the theme by using my artistic licence.

Let me just check my "Speak And Spell" machine here....(tapping) is it a "c" or a "k" at the end of "pedantic"?
