View Full Version : On Ms Fraser plus my latest Cocteau demise . . .

I bought the latest Massive Attack CD last week.
I quite fancy it , especially " Everywhen " .
Horace Andy does sing beautifully !!!
To me, MA sound like they ' ve been listening to a lot of 4AD lately , with touches of DCD in "What you soul sings" and Garlands on "Special cases ".
Sinnead O'Connor ' s never been me cuppa tea , she does a fine job but one
can only wonder what Liz would ' ve done .
Does anybody know why she gave up her collaboration in the end ?
She gets a mention together with beau Damon Reece -who actually does the drums-in the thank-you credits, presumably for tea and sconnes ?????
How long do we have to wait for her purrs and coos ?
Someone throw a brick through her window !
Her latest was the OST in the Lord of the Rings , where she proved that not only was she in top vocal form but also creatively original.
Oh , well . . .
Sad fact of the week was to see that Japan ' s equivalent to Tower Records ,
the Wave store , has no Cocteau rack anymore , like most other shops around here .
That such a seminal and influential band is not represented as it should !!!
Please , console me . . .
Reading a coupleof reviews, they make it seem like Liz made a good decision by not getting involved in the MA album. The reviews say it's a right stinker.

What do the reviews mean by "right stinker " ?
It isn't a masterpiece but it still manages to create some
beautiful and subtle soundscapes .
It' s likely that Liz didn't like it and called it quits . . .
.saddly, cocteau twins files are vanishing from record stores at an alarming rate around here, as the big mega stores are quietly destroying the small independent local chains....ask a sales person if they have any cocteau twins and you can watch they're eyes go all glassy (one can almost hear them thinking,"what the fuck's a cocteau twin??)as they ask you to talk to the manager.........
who fakes it too,..... but better.

I've had no trouble finding CT albums where I live, even in the major stores. Granted, the smaller ones have better selections, but it seems as if they're pretty well represented overall.

no, it's true. i've noticed a definite reduction in the presence of cocteau twins on record shop shelves.
there's still an abundance of joe cocker or leonard cohen, if you want that kind of thing.. but all too often nothing inbetween. it's a crying shame, and no mistake.
and then i look to my right and what do i see? what the fuck do i see? racks and racks of bob fuckin dylan, that's what!!
wake up hmv, wake up tower, wake up everyone else and smell the decent music!!!

Sad but true , as the Orbital song goes .
The Cocteaus have been losing shelf space over the years .
There ' s nothing you can do about that , but OH the joy of going into a store
and check yet again all those wonderful 4AD years covers , feel reassured that the world cannot be that bad after all when your fingers savour those wrapped CDs like jewel boxes . . .
First thing I do when I go into a record shop is checking Cocteauland .
Then I go for Birmingham 's finest , FELT .
How about you lot ?;)

I suppose, in defense of Jo, this would support her assertion that the remaster/reissue campaign will help get the product back into stores. I find that a lot of the releases are still widely available here in Boston, but to be fair, we are blessed with a lot of good shops.

Absolutely! We are blessed in NE...
If there are any "official" Cocteau releases people are looking for, I'd take advantage of the Seeker's Forum. I'm always happy to dig through the racks to find a release someone may be seeking (I find the Cocteau slot at my local indie shop pretty well stocked).
And besides, you may connect with someone willing to part with something yummy!

Read this in forjm , French site devoted to the Cocteaus , about Liza not appering on MA ' s latest :
Pas de participation pour Liz au prochain Massive Attack :
" cela aurait ete trop previsible , et Liz ne sais pas trop quelle direction prendre!!! " , selons les dires de Massive Attack .
No collaboration from Liz , " that would have been too predictable and Liz
is not quite sure of which direction she should take " , say Massive Attack .
So , Liz seems to be having a difficult time trying to figure out what to do next.
Somebody - Mr Guthrie ? Mr Raymonde ? - give her a compass !!!!

if all the negative press i've heard about '100th window' is anything to go by, they'll be wishing liz had taken the predictable route!

maria jose, try to ignore Šnevery's comments, it works for me.
i know how you feel about being fed up waiting for liz to produce a solo effort. i find myself excited at hearing her meager 30 second offerings in the LOTR soundtrack and it leaves me wanting more. all we can do is cross our fingers and hope that she hasn't abandoned the idea of a solo record completely! :)
