Sigh's Smell of Farewell
Orange Appled, evidemment!
I think it's impossible to choice, like an album, there are perfect songs: Cherry coloured funk, cicco buff, aikea guinea, thisbite, and others, and there are imperfect songs but which have an enormous charm and that I apréciate sometimes as much: crushed, I wear your ring, know who are At every age….and there are the songs of the first singles: peppermint pig, Alas Dies Laughing,… where there was an incredible creativity and which touch me particularly.
But if a name should be given, I would say: Cherry coloured funk.
And a bonus : Another day

It's just so hard to pick. Yes HOLV is one of my absolute faves but I think overall that Orange Appled falls in to number 1. I've got a top 5 and although they might change places, the songs always remain the same 5. (For the record I also have 5 Cocteau songs that I hate!)

Orange Appled is pretty great actually. I had it on in my car this summer when I was still high on endorfines after playing some racketball. The sun was shining, the smell of blossom in the streets and Orange appled playing. Ecstatic. But I wouldn't call it my favourite per se.
Victorialand and especially Fluffy Tufts takes me places I've never been to. Not a lot of music can do that for me.

it is really hard to choose because there are so many styles and moods and everything, but in the end i have to say 'millimillenary'. i would have picked 'orange appled' but nobody i know seems to be as moved by it as i am... summerhead is another one of the best too.
i am clearly, clearly missing something...
petroldarling
Oct-1-06, 4:46 PM
why do you say that, moe?
the only reason i'm able to choose at all is because i've made a lot of ct comps for people and i kind of get a lot of feedback about what really represents the band well enough to get them interested, i guess... and 'millimillenary' gives me this little happy tickly feeling in my stomach because it's so beautiful! but i love 'a kissed out red floatboat' and 'cico buff' and 'heaven or las vegas' and 'love's easy tears' and about eighty jillion others that i couldn't live without.
why do you say that, moe?
I say that because many if not most if not ALL of the songs on poll that have been clicked don't do much for me, some of them I can't even put a tune next to the song title... I know I've said this before, but I feel like there is this amazing quality in the band's music that I just don't seem to be grasping... I don't know whether to be upset or not...? I know that everyone has different tastes and one of the things I love about the band is that there don't really seem to be "obvious favourites" - but still...
:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
i would have picked 'orange appled' but nobody i know seems to be as moved by it as i am...

hahahaha, i suck!
Look at some of the earlier posts on this thread, Alli, and you'll see Orange Appled has quite a few fans. I always liked Millimillenary because I thought it was cool Liz wrote a song about hats (if that's really what it's about).

specifically, if a song I'm not particularly fond of is undeservedly leading the pack, I shall anoint the next closest one in voting total that I (presumably) tolerate better. It's the only sane way to vote, imo.

And totally ruining the purpose of the poll. There aren't any prizes if you pick the most popular, equally you aren't going to get persecuted if you vote for something nobody else does - we just want honest answers so we can get a (current) definitive answer.

I reach into the everchanging past and 'Musette and Drums' remains intact. That I once had a black and white dream of walking into a strange pub/club and hearing a band (I assume it was CT) performing a acoustic version sort of solidifies the choice. Really though, just looking at the titles of the forgotten gems there is excellence in all-again revealed.

wow, I never knew 'cherry-coloured funk' was so highly regarded. I like it well enough, but more as middle-of-the-pack level for me than top 10%, or higher.
It would be almost impossible to choose 'one best' song by Cocteau Twins. Currently, the song "Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires" plays in my head all day, but that's because I've been listening to them a lot recently. Before I knew about this poll I had been working on several best of CDs for myself. The first one made is "Best of 88-96", comprising of the last four albums, my favorite period. Here's the tracklist:

I think HOLV is CT's best LP. The highlight for me musically, is the last song, "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fire". This song brings a tear to my heart. I love this song! Yeah, but one scored 6.5% and the other 4.5% of the total vote so it's hardly a runaway victory or even particularly representative. Vive la difference!

`Speaking about the Song as a Vocal Work of Elizabeth Fraser , there`s no doubt that She rules my Phonik Culture . I really think the Vocal Compozition is like a Sphere placed high above the Ether .( I am talking about the most beautiful Contrast between a singer`s Vocal Performances !!) Her Etheric High Vocals has No Gravity Point... then her Powerfull Hysterical Vocals leading my Senses to the strong impression of Symbiotic Duality of our Phonik Nature !!

It's just so hard to pick. Yes HOLV is one of my absolute faves but I think overall that Orange Appled falls in to number 1. I've got a top 5 and although they might change places, the songs always remain the same 5. (For the record I also have 5 Cocteau songs that I hate!)
And yes, dying to HOLV sounds like a plan!
im aghast !!!!! i cant think of a single cocteau twins song that i dont LOVE there maybe some i listen to more than others - but there are NoNE that i dislike much less HATE ;-(
i think its impossible for me to choose one single song of cocteau twins fav 50 cocteau twins song you might be in with a chance - for it is NO exaggeration when i say i ADORE the music of cocteau twins - so please accept my sincere appologies but i just can't choose

I would've voted Five Ten Fiftyfold, but it was not included so I went for Wax and Wane.
I've been hesitating to post in this thread for a while now.................... and OOOOOHH i've been aching in pain trying to chose just 1 song........... uggghghgh ................
and after many moons of listening to Crushed and Orange Appled...... I've sadly had to come to terms with myself and remove one of them from my No.1 spot.............
And the winner is...............
THis one!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP2YJ2fEEJU)

Lorelei. Pump the volume on that fucker and I get multiple eargasms.
I wonder how many other bands if asked this question would produce 70 different favourite songs out of just 216 people? The sheer range of tastes on these boards never ceases to amaze me, and long may it continue :)
Yes, yes, but why isn't "The Itchy Glowbo Blow" winning?!?
It's just not fair ...sigh ...

I think Cico Buff is the most brilliant song they haven ever written.
The simplicity of the chorus is almost flowing through the music. It's so brilliant because the music and the vocals are in perfect balance.
The song gives me a very strange and some kind of a peacefull feeling. Like I can handle everything. As if the song is telling me to see the beautifull sides of life.
Brilliant!
Whenever I think about Cocteau Twins, just one song allways comes to my mind, the last song on their last album that says it all: Seekers who are lovers. It's really sounding like there will never be another song and it just could play forever.

Judging by the results, it looks as if opinions are spread over a number of songs.
the CT have been such a soundtrack to my life whilst growing up that it is will be very difficult to pick just one favourite.
I mean. I loved victorialand when it came out.. and Aikea Guinea.. Blue Bell Knoll.. and Heaven of Las Vegas is just amazing. Then a few classics on Head of Heals..

Sorry but I'm obviously a different kind of fan than the rest of you. I've got all the 'legal' CD album relases, after having everything up to Victorialand on vinyl. I listen to CT albums quite regualrly BUT as complete work rather than as a group of songs/tracks. Apart from the odd single I hardly know the name of any individual song. Sometimes to 'freshen' up an album I'll use the shuffle function on my CD player & it sounds wierd as I'm expecting the next physical track.
I expect to be either thrown off this forum or verbally abused sometime in the next 24 hours.

I love them all, but the one that always pops into my head when I think of the Twins, and still gives me chills when I hear it, is "Kookaburra." So far, I am alone in my opinion, but my God, Elizabeth is amazing on that, as are the boys. It stands out as one of the fiercest tracks in their canon.
If I could register a runner-up, it would be "Pearly Dewdrops' Drops." That was the first song I ever heard by the Twins, back in 1984 (on the radio no less -- remember real alternative radio?) -- and I was hooked.

Tho' there are other titles fighting for first in my head, I picked "orange appled". I once had a dream where I was watching this music show on t.v. in which musical artists would create a video of an alternate version of one of their songs, done in a different style. I was ecstatic to see the Twins performing a country version of "orange appled". Not because it was country, but because it was the Twins. Surprisingly, it worked (think of the slide guitar in "bluebeard"). The video was a very sunny, blue sky kinda thing with just a hint of the set from "Hee Haw"! It was so realistic, right down to the music, Liz's voice, and her crystalline blue-eyed smiling face. Craziness.

It has always been high on my list for that reason and others I've mentioned before. I'd call it a timeless feel, in that how I feel about it seems timeless, less subject to my mood, it always takes me to the same place. True to an extent with many of their songs, very much for that one, with me.

Hmmm I couldn't choose between Lorelei and The Spangle Maker, but I voted for the second one for no clear reason. They are so different, in Lorelei you hear Liz in a softer, breathier and sexiest style. The guitar line is simple but perfect, and the rhythim is very sensual, it makes you want to move.
On the other hand, The spangle maker has that great repetitive melody and beat, but at the end it suddenly turns into a musical orgasm. Liz voice in this song is more emotional and powerful, the guitar is more textured and the bassline is really dark.
I think both songs resume the best of the Cocteaus in their early time. I just couldn't decide.

HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE ANYTHING THAT THE CT DID AS COMMERCIAL? I LIKE CAROLYN'S FINGERS BECAUSE IT'S SO TINGLINGLY, RESONATING AND PURE MELODY. I MUST SOUND/LOOK LIKE A RIGHT TWAT WHEN I TRY TO SING ALONG TO IT--NOT THAT I DO IN PUBLIC!!

I AM RIGHT WITH YOU THERE ON THAT. HOW MANY PEOPLE COULD SAY STRAIGHT AWAY, ON HEARING A TRACK, OH YES, THATS CALLED SO AND SO. SOMETIMES ITS GOOD TO BE ABLE TO SING ALONG IF YOU KNOW THE LYRICS OF A SONG, TO KNOW THE MEANING ETC. BUT WITH MOST OF CT'S SONGS, LIZ'S VOICE IS ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY INSTRUMENT ADDING TO THEIR UNIQUE SOUND.

good luck with that. Cocteau Twins are so multi-dimensional and in the span of 13 or so years, their music changed a lot. I like a lot of their raw stuff but then there's the fluffier stuff. My point being, I have a feeling your results will vary depending on your mood. That is why, to this day, I have not answered this poll, also because I think there's a difference between "best" and "favourite".
When I first got into Cocteau Twins, Garlands was hands down my favourite song of theirs... Then it became Musette and Drums... Then I Wear Your Ring... then The Thinner the Air... You see what I'm saying? It's cool though.

No votes for KWYAAEA? I demand a recount
This mounth the winner is:Eyes are mosaics!!!!!!
From a purely art point of view, their best constructed work of pure art would be either:
"Quisquose", "Donimo" or "Great Spangled Fritillary"....difficult to choose which one of those is the most awesome.
From a purely song song perspective, I think their best is "Carolyn's Fingers"
So I voted in the poll for "Carolyn's Fingers", which is a great song.

I went for "A Kissed Out Red Floatboat".
But I like all of their songs.
In fact on my iPod they ALL have 5 star ratings except for "Seekers Who Are Lovers (mix from lullbies to violaine, why even mess with a classic)" and "Rococo".
Tough one this.. but after about an hour of deliberation i chose "Seekers Who Are Lovers"
I just love the version on the BBC Sessions, not keen on the remix on the Lullabies To Violaine disc though.
i just watched the video on YOuTube for 'crushed' tonight.http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wgv08gsexfc[
i voted for it...
I went with Golden Vein, but it is nearly impossible to select an absolute favorite, even for me, out of all the songs they've released so far...
