God, I love Iris DeMent. I saw her live a few years ago in a little venue. Just her, a piano and a guitar. I think I cried the whole time. By the time I got to meet her afterwards, my eyes were two puffy slits. Incredible.

Lyrics to Help Me Lift You Up :

I don't have to tell you that you're all alone
You're doing it, not go home
You'll have to be with your own kind
I'll have to stay with my own kind
Help me lift you up

So sorry if I can't stop pretending
So sorry if I don't let you go
Like this, but not like this is any
I think you know
I think you know
Help me lift you up
Help me lift you up

Oh, I have a dream
It's very clear
You're all around
But never near

I have a dream
It's very clear
You're all around
But never near

Oh, help me lift you up

Mary Margaret O'Hara:heart:

Ahh, that song's like helium. Love it.

But my pick for the saddest would be "To Cry About". Just wrenching.

Saw them play this at The Royal Albert Hall a few years back.
Never seen so many grown men in tears....... myself included.

AdrIKMDRLbU

Starlight do you know me
Please, don't look at me now
I'm falling apart
Silver on the window
Like the bike I once had
At home in the yard
Jesus love let me down and I know where you are
It might lead somewhere

Gather me in snowfall
And the cars going by the north and the south
Flowers on the table
And the coffee gets cold
Like the milk in my mouth
Sailing on no honeymoon
Just separate chairs in separate rooms
Jesus, please
Make us happy sometimes
No more shout
No more fight
Family life

Tomorrow will be Christmas
We'll be singing old songs
And light up the tree
God and all the mercy
And say all your prayers
For little old me
Jesus, you
Wipe the tears from her face
And the sound of his voice
Family life

Yeah, yeah
Mystery

Jesus, I go to sleep and I pray
For my kids
For my wife
Family life
Yeah

for me too, I dare not listen to melancholy stuff when I'm tired/fed up--though occasionally it's ok to wallow

you say "love is a temple, love's a higher law" you ask me to enter then you make me crawl. But I can't keep holding on to what you got when all you've got is hurt.

all of these songs stab me in the tear ducts at certain points, so I rarely listen to them. But, shit's real, bitches.

Very nice!

Isn't it? I can't get enough of this kid McCombs!

Here's another sad tune, bordering on desolate. I especially like it live:

Harrowing as well as sad. At this point, Nick Drake was so depressed that he could not sing and play guitar at the same time, so those tracks were recorded separately.

I get saddened feeling that while a lack of success didn't kill Nick Drake, it certainly didn't help him. He was IMO the most painterly of songwriters. I love his stuff. I thought the use of his 'One of these things first' in the movie 'Seven Pounds' was really striking. Got me listening to him again.

anyway- my sister shared this version of 'River Man' by Andy Bey with me, and I thought it was a great cover.
