i am compiling a list of sad songs. not obvious ones of course...but the more interesting ones...cool bands that have a song that makes you cry. criteria for this thread is that your choices cannot be simply 80s-led, and of course no cocteaus ones cos obviously they are all sad.
please give me three choices each..
my favourite sad song today is by The Zephyrs 'The Buildings Aren't Going Anywhere'

If I have to pick 3, I guess they'd be:
Mandalay: Not 17 (everything about it is gorgeous and heartbreaking)
Jeff Buckley: Corpus Christi Carol (unearthly and suffused with a sense of loss)
Maxwell's cover of This woman's work (reminds me of things I'd rather forget, but the song's so beautiful I love it anyway. I like his version a little better than Kate's )
A few others that come to mind:
Jonatha Brooke: Deny (I get the feeling it's about a teenage boy murdering his family)
Des'ree: I'm Kissing you (Craig Armstrong's instrumental version is wonderful too)
Freedy Johnston: This perfect world (...these pills won't even let me cry)
Eva Cassidy: Somewhere over the rainbow (call it sappy if you must, but she is (was) such a good singer/interpreter
Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush: Don't Give Up (maybe it's supposed to be inspirational, but it kills me every time)
Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares: Kalimankou Denkou
Gorecki: Symphony # 3 opus 36 (so beautiful, but it is like, harmful to my emotional health to sit down and listen to the whole thing. I remember watching the movie Fearless, and the plane crash scene at the end just making me sob uncontrollably.)
...sniffle... I think I'm getting verklempt!

The Doves - 'The Cedar Room'
V.Sad :(
Tears. The Chameleons.
Just a lovely, moving record documenting the loss of a loved one. Burgess always sounded sincere and this was no different. Available in two versions, a thrilling electric cut or the more reflective semi-acoustic one. I slightly prefer the later.
Beautiful.
I’m guessing I’m not the only Cocteau fan who also loves The Chameleons?
Opened Once. Jeff Buckley
Most of his make me sad as I recall his death every time. Such a sad waste. There are many candidates, particularly Hallelujah but that’s Cohen’s so I selected this one from the ‘My sweetheart the drunk’ album. “I am the railroad track abandoned
With the sunlight forgetting that I ever happened”
Gets me every time.
When we two parted. Afghan Whigs
This amazing live band sometimes managed a subtle song and this was a great one. A kind of sequel to Love will tear us apart as it dealt with a failed love affair in the physical sense. Guilt and retribution would soon follow but for now we wallow.
It was hard to choose 3 but the man said 3! Mind you he also said no 80’s and I flunked that first go! LOL
I must add that I agree so many previous posts. Sylvian (Darkest Dreaming for me). Goreki, Read House Painters….great stuff everyone.
PS, hello!

sad doesn't always have to be dark, dirty and or scary.
don't u think?
I do! Reminds me of the 'Sad Song' by David Byrne:
"You may think I look sad
But I am just sleeping
It's my facial expression
I'm probably dreaming"
Retyping my reply now...as it was lost when I posted, typing in a separate text editor from now on... :(
anyway...music which I consider depressing is uninspiring and generally makes me feel worse....music which is inspired and makes me feel better relates best to how I feel...happy, sad, whatever...much music(regarded as sad) is very uplifting to me...nothing makes me feel worse when I'm down then some annoying, superficially happy music..token 'sad' song in much popular music is altogether unmotivating to me.
Some music is tearfully sad for me and is so for inexplicable emotional reasons, so could be happy in tone, Cherry Coloured Funk is a tune I was generally uplifted by and after the loss of a close friend, I found that song alone caused serious balling(which was the best thing for me as I found)...it still makes me feel good, part of why I truly love the song.
Yet still other music is quite sombre to me, but soothing and not tearful. Some example of this would be Otterly, Nauges(That which passes, passes as clouds) by King Crimson, Round the Bend by Beck, Flames by VAST, Syndir Guos by Sigur Ros, The End of Words by DCD. Funny as gloomy as DCD can be, the fill me with intrigue and I have yet to find any music by them tearful. In fact, of all the tunes mentioned here, half I didn't know and the other half isn't tearful or sombre for me. Closest would be 'Don't Give Up'. Oh and Kookaburra, nice to see another person here knows Renaissance, I don't know that tune, but I've heard a bit of their stuff....
Ok, so my 3 most tearful songs of all time are impossible to name due to cloudy memories, at the moment I would say(with the lyrical part that seems to drive it home):
History of Us - Indigo Girls "Take part in the pain of this passion play, Stretching our youth as we must, until we are ashes to dust
Forget Her - Jeff Buckley - "Don't fool yourself, she was heartache from the moment that you met her"
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush - "All the things I should have given but I didn't..."
Cheesy perhaps, no rationale here...not an artistic opinion, just unrestrained sadness. What a beautiful and wonderful thing it is.

Great that you like The Chameleons
I've seen them 11 times since their 'Resurrection' in 2000 and can't really begin to describe how I felt when I first heard their new material. They were really BACK.
I can't really split The Cocteaus and The Chameleons and that is a major compliment to both bands.
I'd probably choose my own poor, unrecorded songs that have obscure personal meaning but since no one would know what I'm talking about, I'll choose Tori Amos' Hey Jupiter, The Cure's Pictures of You, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 Second Movement.

Yeah,
Mark 'Birdy' Burgess sure knows how to capture the human condition with his lyrics...Intrigue in Tangiers, Death of Imagination...but SAD? Nah, frustrated but hopeful seems to be the bottom line with a whole lot of searching going on. I saw them back on the Strange Times tour in Providence and New York and just caught them at Maxwells in "Joisey"...I have to say, they were better now than they were back then, but then again I expected them to be like the second coming back in the 80's since I was so in awe of their albums...they were my religion back then...those lyrics were like the words of the mystics, prophets and visionaries all rolled up and delivered with a band that hailed them in with apocolyptic under and overtones...God, they sure moved me in a huge way...I just chickened out in the fall when Birdy was standing nearby...I mean what words can do justice to the impact of those albums, "errm, Mark, your music transformed me"...well, I took a rain check on a statement!
etc etc

Man, that one was a real toss up for me, on retrospect it has perhaps been more of a tear jerker for me than This Woman's Work...both are close tho...as they were on the same album at a time when I was quite susceptible to crying I guess.
I also thought, music never makes me sad...and sad music never puts me back in a sad place...there are so many that might be sad for me, but never coincided with a sad experience.
oh my god!!! i forgot about Interpol, one of my current favorites right now. musically & vocally i think NYC kills me with tears. Whoa!!
Yes, I saw the Chameleons at Que Sera in Long Beach, CA, if anybody is in town ever, Tuesday nights are the best to come and enjoy a cocktail or 5 along with the videos and music of the '80s with one of my good friends who is the bartender (advertise, advertise) just ask for Luann tell her Philip sent you. Anyway, enough advertising, the Chameleons were very good, always wanted to see them in the '80s, never got to, so it was quite enjoyable to see them so close to home and playing in the New Millenium. And they played all the good ones too.
I can't remember who suggested David Sylvians "Darkest Dreaming" but if anybody wants to cry all night with a bottle of wine that is the song to do it to. :p

Eddi Reader WHAT YOU DO WITH WHAT YOU GOT...she sings it with such conviction...and the lyrics are so true...how we as human beings are stuck in the endless cycle of pain and suffering...that last verse...kills me
WHAT YOU DO WITH WHAT YOU GOT....
you must know someone like him
who is tall and strong and lean
with a body like a greyhound
and a mind so sharp and keen
but his heart, just like a laurel
grew twisted round itself
till almost everything he did
brought pain to someone else
it’s not just what you’re born with
it’s what you choose to bear
it’s not how big your share is
it’s how much you can share
it’s not the fights you dreamed of
it’s those you really fought
it’s not what you’ve been given
it’s what you do with what you’ve got
oh what’s the use of two strong legs
if you only run away
and what’s the use of the finest voice
if you've nothing good to say
what’s the use in strength and muscle
if you only push and shove
and what’s the use of two good ears
if you can’t hear those you love
between those who use their neighbours
and those who use the cane
between those in constant power
and those in constant pain
between those who run to glory
and those who cannot run
tell me which ones are the cripples
and which ones touch the sun?
...which ones touch the sun

Until I'm In You
( Angel Baby Soundtrack )
Bright and shiny lonely star
Take my prayer
Under your wing
Blow a kiss, a magic spell
Gently roll the clouds away
If god ..
An angel sings
Your very soul is mine to keep
Gravity's imaginary
With your white big fluffy feathered wings
Hold me closer
And closer, closer still
Until I'm in you
Secret world
Heaven sent
Is calling you
And me
Where blue and green can never be seen
With all the colour in between
Hold me closer
And closer, closer still
until I'm in you
Until I'm lost in you

I just don't get too emotional during sad songs. Most of the time I find them far too beautiful to be sad. The one person who manages to get me going though, is Brendan Perry.
When I saw Dead Can Dance for the first time (out of 2) was on their tour that later became 'Towards the Within'. Well, having been a huge fan it became obvious very quickly that most of what we were hearing had not yet been released! That fucker sang "I can see now" into "American dreaming" and I've never cried so hard before or since without someone having died! I also don't pay much attention to lyrics most of the time but that night during those 2 songs were definately an exception. FUCK ME!!!!
More recently would be Brendan's "Sloth". Fucking brilliant!!!!

I was thinking of saying REM's - "The One I Love", but I've always thought the lyrics in that song were more condescending than anything else:
"A simple prop, to occupy my time..."
1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Sad Waters
2. The Go-Betweens - You Can't Say No Forever
3. The Smiths - I Won't Share You
4. (Four, I Know) Big Star - Kangaroo

what a fantastic response! i think it's obvious that there is a demand out there for this....i did have an ulterior motive..i am researching the idea for a bella union release....so if someone could collate all these titles and put them in one email to me ( multiple votes for same song would naturally count strongly towards me using it/trying to use it!) i will set about the task of putting it into action...on the sleevenotes i will credit each person who has contributed with a suggestion here..thanks once again...i canot promise which tracks i will use or be able to use, but have enjoyed your suggestions enormously!!!

oh man...'mercy street'...that's the deal. i had completely forgotten about that track. i did my high school senior thesis on sylvia plath's 'the bell jar' so i also did a lot of research on her contemporary, anne sexton. peter gabriel's tribute to her on 'mercy street' is brilliant...simply heartbreaking. if you're a reader, poet or just interested then check out 'searching for mercy street' by linda gray sexton. it's a compelling biographical sketch of a somewhat infamous mother by her daughter. a great read indeed...

My favourite sad song is "unloveable" by the smiths simply cause
it contains the lines "I know im unloveable , you dont have to tell me. I dont have much in my life but take it its yours".
That's cool stratton, Mercy Street is easily my fav song on So, I like So minus Sledgehammer actually, that's another remaster I've considered getting.

Gotta admit that Pete's pretty damn smart when it comes down to it! Just listening to his lyrics is enough indication of that, but he knows he has to put such 'pop' songs like Sludgehammer (not a typo) in there to attract a wider audience.
I still think that 'Don't give up' is worthy of being in there, but yes, Mercy Street is fucking amazing!

Gosh, it's hard to have a limit. This three are mostly associated with feelings, but also with memories...
1. Breathe - Lifehouse, No Name Face

Squeeze - Labelled With Love

these sad times - the softies

crying of lot g - yo la tengo
papercuts - broadcast

jimmie's texas blues - jimmie rodgers
I have four:
Tricky "makes me wanna die"
Radiohead "creep"
Leonard Cohen "hey, that's no way to say good-bye"
Marvin Gaye "mercy, mercy me (the ecology)"
....great choice with marvin.........the whole album "what's goin on" reduces me to emotional pudding.

Tori Amos - Tear in your hand
Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick road
Annie Lenox - Why
I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to add my input. The saddest song I believe I've ever heard is "Asleep" - The Smiths. I can remember a time in 6th grade when I recorded that song over and over and over on a cassette, listened to it and cried until I couldn't anymore. Ah, those blissful days of preteen angst...

JOHN CALE: MUSIC FOR A NEW SOCIETY.
If you want sad tainted with a truly worrying sense of despair...then look no further than this release.
Lou Reed may have wrote "Sad Song" but John Cale actually wrote a bucketload of them on this sparse collection of tearful ditties.
Pretty much every song concerns loss or regret regarding something or somebody.
Thoughtless Kind: Concerns regret of failed friendships and the inability to sustain them- features "real" tears/crying towards the end.
Taking your life in your hands/If you were still around/Close watch/Damn Life/Broken Bird/Sanities- when taken as a whole makes for a tough listening experience
He recorded "the songs" then stripped everything away bar overdubs he had added so the songs are barely there in most cases, some songs were recorded first take/improvising a lyric over the music- you can here the "pull" of hesitation on a couple of tracks but it works..
If i had to pick one track- (I keep a) close watch probably fits the bill.
I've not played this in a couple of years- i used to play it almost daily...i must have been unhappy.
In the past 2-3 years...trick answers though...I don't always cry!

Okay Simon, I'll play along. Forgive me if I'm too generalist.
Saddest songs I can think of:
1. "And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda" - The Pogues (the winner, bar none ... I was *floored* when I heard it.)
2. "The Flower Called Nowhere" - Stereolab
3. "I Came To See You" - Henry Cow
4. "Today" - Jefferson Airplane (well it makes me cry).
5. "I Talk To The Wind" - King Crimson
6. "House With No Door" - Van Der Graaf Generator
7. "Lost" - Van Der Graaf Generator (aw hell -- just put anything by VDGG or Peter Hammill, but these two stand out as *particularly tortured*).
8. "A Way To Survive" - Snowpony
9. "I Will Say Goodbye" - Michel Legrand
10. "Things Could Turn Around" - fIREHOSE
11. "Weeping" - Throbbing Gristle (but this one is obvious)
12. "The Lady In The Radiator Song" from Eraserhead. When that movie crystallised in my brain what was actually happening in it, this song became a very sad song indeed.
Hope this helps.

The Paris Match by The Style Council (Tracey Thorn version, of course)

"So may it Secretly Begin"
"Minuano (Six Eight)"
"The Girls Next Door"
"Here to Stay"

Oh, Elysium, I could write realms on this song and the effects it had on me!!!! But that "rush-release" video (after the success of Mandinka) is just shite! I think I've got it on DVD somewhere. The (amateur) visuals take so much away from the emotional power and impact of this song. I'm being honest here when I say that this is the one and only time in my life when I could have killed myself, after listening to this song for a few times (gay, girlfriend, confront, being, "courting", mix the words up as you like!). I remember one Wednesday afternoon, after Uni, lying on my bed (at home) and listening to "Troy". It was only the fact that I didn't have a loaded gun that stopped me killing myself that afternoon.
Sad? For me, still, this song can stir up memories that are as raw and painful as if it was yesterday.

Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Sanvean - Dead Can Dance
...and ok...I have to cheat a bit and add 'Watching You Without Me' by Kate Bush, and 'Upside-down' by Tori Amos...and I just better stop there.

I almost wish I hadn't remembered...now I have to listen to it. Ugh...god. Get

On a less-beaten path...don't laugh...but 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain' by Willie Nelson is saaaad indeed. Ok, it's a well-beaten path, but it smells like manure.
Sanvean seems to be a in a lot of peoples lists... Its borderline over the top for its dramaticness I think but it really pulls the strings for me!

Yup ;) I rather like 'The Redheaded Stranger' album. Speaking of country, I completely forgot about Patsy Cline...which song? Throw a rock...you'll hit a sad one. Even her 'happy' songs are sad to me. I love Patsy...

:) The one from the seventies that really got me was 'The Crash of the Edmund Fitzgerald' by Gordon Lightfoot...which is a bit more haunting than sad, but still very much both to me.
I can't keep adding songs every time I think of another REALLY sad one...but I have to add just one more:
'The Drugs Don't Work' - The Verve crying
Whew! There...and I didn't even have to mention 'Song for Eric' or '1000 Oceans' by Tori Amos...or 'My Lagan Love' by Kate Bush........OH CRAP.....
Sorry, I like to cry a lot...apparently.

from uncut.co.uk.......
The Verve’s "The Drugs Don’t Work" has topped a list of songs that make people feel sad, a scientist has found in research conducted on behalf of phone company Nokia.
Dr Harry Witchel, an expert in physiology and music, has measured physical reactions to music – heart rate, respiratory responses and skin temperatures to find song’s "tune trigger quotient".
In conjunction with the Official UK Charts Company, Dr. Witchel has also compiled lists of the happiest songs, measured by levels of sighs - as they indicate happy memory recollection, and exhilarating songs, measured by an increased breathing rate.
Dr Witchel commenting on the results said, "Music is undeniably powerful at triggering different emotional states. Changes in tempo and frequencies induce profoundly different emotional states. A slow tempo song like the Verve's The Drugs Don't Work slows down the heart
compared to most of the other songs and compared to white noise - in other words, it works like the emotional state of sadness.”
In contrast, the research found that Lily Allen’s “LDN”, Abba’s “Dancing Queen” and R.E.M’s “Shiny Happy People” were the ones guaranteed to bring on a smile.
Blur’s “Song 2” topped the ‘exhilerating’ songs list by quite some way, Witchel said, “I was surprised that Blur's Song 2 could be such a clear winner among our participants."
The research found that the saddest ten songs were:
1. The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work
2. Robbie Williams - Angels
3. Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
4. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
5. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
6. Will Young - Leave Right Now
7. Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight?
8. Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
9. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover
10. Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
and the happiest ten were:
1. Lily Allen - LDN
2. Abba - Dancing Queen
3. REM - Shiny Happy People
4. B52s - Love Shack
5. The Beatles - She Loves You
6. Beyonce - Crazy In Love
7. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
8. Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - I've Had The Time Of My Life
9. The Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life
10. Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around
both very terrible lists. the only one id agree with is sinead.

i am compiling a list of sad songs. not obvious ones of course...but the more interesting ones...cool bands that have a song that makes you cry. criteria for this thread is that your choices cannot be simply 80s-led, and of course no cocteaus ones cos obviously they are all sad.
please give me three choices each..
my favourite sad song today is by The Zephyrs 'The Buildings Aren't Going Anywhere'
simon
INVISIBLE INK/ Aimee Mann
THE LONG ROAD/Eddie Vedder and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
CHUAIGH ME 'NA ROSSAN/Celtic Odyssey
all these songs make me cry

hehe...same here
Mad Season - 'All Alone' springs to mind as a pretty sad song, it has really beautiful guitar work on it.
"This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush.
Even John Hughes got this right, on film.
"Hallelujah" by both Jeff Buckley and kd Lang, separately.

Very, very true. Never fails to get the waterworks going for me.
True, a fun and unremarkable film, with an exception, for a near brilliant montage during the birth scene. Whenever I hear that song, I see the that lonely teardrop turn to a drop of blood....that does it every time.
Now I know why the heartbeat in 'Tear Drop' gets me. Aaah therapy does one good.

I would say:
1. Song to the Siren -This Mortal Coil
2. Laibach -Across the Universe
3. The Smiths-Asleep
well, alot more but need to think about them.............

Cat Power - In This Hole
"in this hole that we have fixed
we get further and further and further for what?
we must do
I saw you asleep beside a box
your skull inside a box
your eyes blackened by the sound
and the thought of God
where should I hang my head?
where would you like for me to hang my head?
what an abscence of truth
the one horrible thing I saw
what you truely wanted to become
and who you thought I was the fall, the fall
afraid of nothin'(?)
runs deeper than the grave
goes all the way down those tracks
everybody bow your head for the greatest inspiration
a complete contradition
a waist..."

Relative Newbie in Thread Resuscitation Shock.
I have yet to hear the Cure or My Morning Jacket Song. That "Casimir Pulaski Day" from Sufjan Stevens from 3 or 4 years ago still sounds so sad to me.
Whether you like the MMJ track above might depend on how much you like Jim James' (vocalist) voice. If you do like it, i'd strongly recommend the rest of its parent album, At Dawn. It's beautiful, sparse and quite melancholic/romantic. Bermuda Highway, Lowdown or Death Is The Easy Way are also sad tracks, but not morbidly so.
They get labelled as Americana or alt country, which is partly right but does them a disservice as on their recent albums they are fast becoming versatile at many styles of sound.
I don't think I've noticed this thread before either, seems like a great topic.
I adore sad, meloncholy songs.
I was always drawn to requieums in classical music. Something about the strength in the message always seems to be more real to me.
Sure I like happy songs, when I am in the mood, my favorite happy song is "Doing the Unstuck" by The Cure.
Ironic that a band who's notorious for sad songs has a song that actually cheers me up.

Everytime We Saw Goodbye - Annie Lennox
Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change
from major to minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change
from major to minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.

Ya know it wasn't until Depeche Mode's song Clean, that I figured out Inbetween Days is British slang for falling off the wagon. I for some reasone thought that song meant the time between dusk and dawn, a.k.a night.

I thought something similar, Hinge, but I'm not sure what "falling off the wagon" means either.
Falling off the wagon refers to going back to doing something that you'd said you weren't going to do. It's most commonly used to refer to going back to drinking or getting drunk, but can be interpreted for just about anything. The people who leave here swearing they'll never post again and who then come back could be described as falling off the wagon.

Apologies if this one has been mentioned already:
Raindrops - Tindersticks
the words are achingly sad, and compounded by the gorgeous strings in the song, and delicate piano. In fact all of the instrumentation is spot on in creating a mood to match the lyrics.
Silence is here again tonight
The silence is here again tonight
Will the love ever come back?
Will the love ever come back?
I know I've been pushing you away
I know it's been going on for days
Those awkward little things
So endearing
Those awkward little things
Wear on me
See, what we got here is a tired love
What we got here is a lazy love
It mooches around the house
Can't wait to go out
What it needs, it just grabs
It never asks
We sit and watch the divide widen
We sit and listen to our hearts who crumble
With our only chance to jump
Neither of us had the guts
Or maybe we're just too proud
To say it out loud
Silence is here again tonight
Silence is here again tonight

Sorry...how could I forget...possibly the saddest song ever...
'The Lovers pt. 2' by the Legendary Pink Dots.
Oops, I’ve only just seen this thread …
Good to see somebody else mentioning the Dots. For me it’s ‘The shock of contact’ that gets me almost every time … ‘Astrid, as sure as blue skies always turn to grey …’
Also, amidst all the mentions of various Smiths songs, I’m surprised nobody has yet mentioned ‘Late night Maudlin Street’ by Morrissey (with guitar by Vini Reilly).
I must admit I had pretty much forgotten about the Chameleons, but seeing ‘Tears’ mentioned has reminded me how moving it is. I must get a Chameleons CD on eBay one of these days …
Since nobody has yet mentioned Joanna Newsom, I’ll mention her here. ‘Emily’ is quite a happy song on the surface, yet somehow I find its tone nostalgic, and it makes me think that the Emily of the title (Joanna’s sister, real or fictional I don’t know) is actually dead.

And you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.
Up the street beside that red neon light,
That's where I met my baby on one hot summer night.
He was the tender and I ordered a beer,
It's been forty years and I'm still sitting here.
But you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.
It's here I had my babies and I had my first kiss.
I've walked down Main Street in the cold morning mist.
Over there is where I bought my first car.
It turned over once but then it never went far.
And I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.
I buried my Mama and I buried my Pa.
They sleep up the street beside that pretty brick wall.
I bring them flowers about every day,
but I just gotta cry when I think what they'd say.
If they could see how the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.
Now I sit on the porch and watch the lightning-bugs fly.
But I can't see too good, I got tears in my eyes.
I'm leaving tomorrow but I don't wanna go.
I love you, my town, you'll always live in my soul.
But I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye,
But I'll hold to my lover,
'Cause my heart's 'bout to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town.
I can see the sun has gone down on my town, on my town,
Goodnight.
Goodnight.

Lyrics to Help Me Lift You Up :
I don't have to tell you that you're all alone
You're doing it, not go home
You'll have to be with your own kind
I'll have to stay with my own kind
Help me lift you up
So sorry if I can't stop pretending
So sorry if I don't let you go
Like this, but not like this is any
I think you know
I think you know
Help me lift you up
Help me lift you up
Oh, I have a dream
It's very clear
You're all around
But never near
I have a dream
It's very clear
You're all around
But never near
Oh, help me lift you up

I can't get back
I'm waiting
For what comes next
You can't live
This life for me
But I can't, you have control
I can't last
Tonight turns to day
I can't find
The words to say
It all stops
When kingdom comes
I can't ?????
Suddenly
I was free
You left me without anything
Suddenly
I was free
You shot me in front of everything
Now your all I need
Blue shadows behind your eyes
I wonder who you disguise
Through windows behind the sky
I wonder who you will find
I'm so tired

It's an angry sad song, as most of theirs are....
Portishead--"Seven Months":
How can I forget you
Disregard how I feel
Silently listen
To the words I can't see
For as long as I have tried
And as low as I can be
I will never resign myself
From the trial I seek
Why should I forgive you
After all that I've seen
Quietly whisper
When my heart wants to scream
For as long as I have tried
And as low as I can be
I will never resign myself
From the trial I seek
There's no time to rest
Or to reconsider
For this cruel unsaid, won't concede
For as long as I have tried
And as low as I can be
I will never resign myself
From the trial I seek
