View Full Version : Who are the Cocteau Twins peers?
Not sure if this is a cafe thread or general?
Question
Nobody else sounds 'like' the Cocteaus right? Okay, but who are their peers in terms of style or stature? Even vibe. Who do you rate as highly (well, ok, close second then!)
Not to put words in peoples mouths but...
Dead Can Dance?
My Bloody Valentine?
The Cure?
The Blue Nile?
New Order?
I'll shut up now. What do others think:confused:

I seem to remember Liz being a big 'Siouxsie & The Banshees' fan and the 'Sex Pistols'. Can't remember the source of that info ....
siouxsie's vocals remind me of liz. esp. on "swimming horses"...(i think "song to the siren")
and also the last "deeeear prudence, won't you come out to play"
that sounded like liz.

....my top 3 recent faux-CT albums are:
3) Pleasant Stitch "S/T"
2) Mandalay "Instinct"
1) Bel Canto "Dorothy's Victory"
FRED of LA
....who would probably rank early Curve as much closer (in spirit and daring originality) to the CTs than The Sundays.

I would say definitely The Sundays. I had a long conversation with David Gavurin at the after party of their last gig in NYC at The Supper Club in '97. He spoke very highly of the band(especially Simon). They used to hang out back in the early '90s. I don't think The Sundays really sound a lot like the Twins but there are some similarities for sure. Harriet Wheeler has been compared to Liz on more than one occasion and I think Dave took some cues from Robin on their sophomore effort 'Blind'.

What about XTC as a notable contemporary of the early CT...not that I think they compare personally, but similarities at some level may exist..i was just listening to Wakeup from Big Express(84) and both Meeting Place & Dying from Skylarking(86). So I thought I'd throw that out there.
i'd have to say that i find the musical sound of Slowdive very similar to that of CT. Also Harold Budd's guitar sound in Pantomime and Among the Fields. Of course, he did collaborate with them a few times. And the reason i even picked up a Lush album was because Cocteau Twins were so hard to find where i'm at, that the guy at the music store recommended the Spooky album to tide me over until i could find more CT. With Lush, it was more about the layering of vocals which made them sound like Cocteau Twins.;)
