new member, first thread, so here goes...

Around '82, high school. friends, disconnected to the outside. darkened rooms, music says what we cannot. one, J, brilliant and crazy. she plays Gary Numan (slow car to china), Bowie (cat people), and the Cocteau Twins. Years later, I id the song as Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops. Didn't like it. My contribution was decidedly safer, Doors and Pink Floyd. awkward fumblings, frustration. a glimpse or attempt at ...? i don't know what has happened to those friends.

1990. for now, alot calmer. A good friend has a high end stereo system. He plays
Nick Drake (pink moon), Velvet's 3rd, and Heaven or Las Vegas. years of tears start to well up. The Twins still make me feel that there is something gentle and kind about existence. very little else does.

Saw Aikea Guinea video on The Tube or some such. - Got the Melody Maker with the Poll winners EP, inc Ivo and (wait for it) a 'One pound off' voucher for Treasure which must have been a deciding factor I guess!

Bought, played - DID die and went to heaven. Stayed there for most of the rest of the decade. That pound was money well saved!

I think using the voice of an angel to try and seduce women is almost unfair :D

I don't remember which track it was, but it was the first time John Peel ever played them. I was actually in bed listening to the show, and it was the 2nd time in my life I'd had a 'sit up and pay absolute attention' moment. The first was Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, CT was the 2nd and Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil was the third.

Pearly Dewdrops was my first, too, in 1986. I heard it only once, as the musical accompaniment to an 'artsy' video made by a college student in the video production department of my local university who came to my high school humanities class to talk about what he did. Just hearing it once, I knew it was like no other music I'd ever heard and I had to find out what it was. I went up to him after class (which was a big deal for an introverted kid like me) and asked him about the music. I wasn't sure whether he said "Decocktoo Twins" or "Cockatoo Twins," but I had to know more. I called up my local college radio station and requested them. The first dj to play them for me was a female punk dj who took pity and played me Love's Easy Tears, although I didn't know that's what it was at the time. I recorded it and listened to it endlessly. And finally, a few months later, started buying any Cocteau Twins release I could find. I eventually ended up dj-ing in my college days, running an indie music mag with a friend and going to LA to interview lots of bands like Lush, Curve, Cranes, HNiA, TWP, Throwing Muses, Moonshake, Unrest, etc. It wouldn't have happened without CT.

high school freshman in 1989...a friend of mine gave me a copy of "the pink opaque". i wasn't sure what to think of the first couple of tracks, then "aikea-guinea" came on and i fell in love. i started buying anything i could get my hands on after that.

My first listen, as far as I recall, is summed up in my intro thread here (http://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/showpost.php?p=235893&postcount=1), if you are interested...

But thank you for your post, Mord, please keep 'em coming.

John Peel's Festive 50 (an annual listeners' poll) - the top 5, which we all eagerly sat around the wirelss to catch, was Smiths songs, except Number 2 : Musette & Drums. Blown away....

Hey Moe, what was the song?

1986, The Spangle Maker. A really good friend played it for me. I thought it was too slow but liked the second half of the song. Not hearing anything else by them and then buying BBK as soon as it came out, I was greatly dissappointed. That is until I took another listen in another state of mind. The interaction of that state and the music brought to focus... awareness... an experience I will never forget. From then on, I can't stop listening to them.

Wanna come over my apartment? Its cool, we have a cat named smudge!

You know, Moe... your name is pronounced Moe-eh and it reminds me of when I lived in hawaii. The word for sleep in the language is Moe Moe... pronounced Mo-eh Mo-eh. Just thought you should know.

An enigma of a man from Scotland appeared in my life over 10 years ago - he played the Twins, Alison Moyet, The Sundays and Tori Amos and he sang like a wee lil' songbird. I'll never forget... Was rather touched by his taste in music cause I knew most of it...except the Twins. Much before this time I vaguely recall sitting in 'Future Bakery' on Bloor Street - Many moons ago when 'HOLV' was popular they played tracks from that album - but back then I did not know who the heck Liz Fraser was.

Wow. I wish I had a cocteau experience like that. most of my teenage 'dry humping' and the like was done to Barbra Streisands' Woman In Love and other corny stuff like that.

Well, I forgot to add the part where 'the adults' took a sunset tour in the boat. From the water was the only way to see us. They passed us calling "What are y'all dooooo-ing???" And giggling themselves silly.

I was so embarrassed at the time, but now it is a cute memory as I am sure they were knee-deep in party favors of their own.

I wish my family unit had been so permissive when I was a teen, with me and themselves. I don't think I could have CT music on when I'm having sex, and perhaps that's why. I can really only handle low-key, ambient instrumental stuff (if that) when engaging in sex. Anything else and it becomes too distracting, takes over the rhythm, etc.

Wow Ely -- I wish my introductions to sex and Cocteau Twins had occurred like that!

Humm I have no idea?? Maybe someone on WFIT-FM played them or maybe it was Todd or Nancy but I know I got Blue Bell Knoll after hearing Carolyns Fingers/Blue Bell Knoll and I know WFNX-FM up in Boston also played them on the air the year I took off school which was 89-90 I think??? CT was just one of a hundredes or so bands I was hearing and liking after joining WFIT. Previous to that if it wasn't on MTV I didn't know of it exsisting but I know I liked what I was hearing on MTV for sure.

I stayed up to watch the Seoul Olympics each night.
At about 3am I flipped channels, and the announcer said,
"Here's the video of the Cocteau Twins singing Carolyn's Fingers". Until then I'd ignored everything after 1969, but curiousity led me to listen, and that one song changed everything for me. A week later I had all their albums on vinyl, and the CD of Bluebell Knoll, (despite not owning a CD player). That's how good they are.

I am not sure I agree about no CT during sex, but TMC 'Filigree and Shadow'
is a whole lot of wonderful...in addition.

Great thread!

1996. I was hanging out with some friends who decided to put on 4CC. I actually didn't notice it at first, because there was a lot of talking going on. However, once the conversation died down and I could hear the music, I immediately took interest. I remember saying. "Who is this? It's beautiful!" Then I asked, "What is she saying?" When they replied, "We don't know," I was instantly hooked.

I went out and bought 4CC and HOLV and listened to them nonstop for days.

A year or so later, I got sick with the flu and a bad fever, and I hallucinated all the videos :) (Which, I had never actually seen on TV or the internet!)

The Cocteau Twins have had such an enormous effect on me in so many ways. I could probably go on for hours about it. I'm so grateful for the lull in the conversation at my friends' house, which lead me to hear them for the first time!

As I don't appear to have contributed to this thread

I heard Pearly Dewdrops-Drop probably on Janice Long's radio program ... eventually I bought the 7" single (via the good old cheapo bins ... they were a great way of buying singles). This eventually lead me to buying Treasure. It took a while but eventually I had the first 4 albums on vinyl ... & Victorialand was the first CD I ever owned.

(my longest time friend) Jansen.

1985.. We'd get high and play albums on his father's stereo, which was custom built, with massive pine cabinets. All I remember was that it was fall, it was morning, he had a copy of Aikea-Guinea, and he played me Kookaburra at damn near full volume.

Felt like I'd been thrown out of an airplane.

In The Gold Dust Rush

I got Head Over Heels from the local library after I'd read an interview with Robert Plant, who named CTs as one of his faves at the time.

Wow, what a start !

When I had a break from 'chefing' , I got a job in a record/camera shop, (I was on the records till, and this upstart younger guy was on the photo side)-- I can't remember the year, except that it was at the time that 'The Moon and the Melodies came out, and in between serving people, I would rummage through the stock and listen to stuff. It wasn't a big shop, and we never had a large amount of new music, but after hearing The M and the M, which I only liked 50% of, I was intrigued, and so the search for CT began.............

Being a big fan of Massive Attack, you couldn't read a review of Mezzanine without it mentioning Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins. And after several years of putting it off, I finally got a used copy of HOLV.
