View Full Version : Live "Instrumental" = "My Hue & Cry"?
When I saw the Cocteaus play Portsmouth Guildhall in 1986 (I think?) they played an instrumental track that I don't believe I ever heard again.
Anyone able to shed any light on this?
Hey, if it turns out to be something I've actually GOT I'll do a forfeit or something! It was a mindblowing night that. Dif Juz had been amazing and I'd done a few substances.
I think this is the thing you are looking for. I found it on KaZaa a couple of weeks ago. Let me know.
Cocteau Twins - Unreleased Instrumental (live in london 1986)
I can't post it here. Can I?

It wasn't 'Dials', was it??
No it wasn't Dials. It's a track which they performed live during 1986 tour, but never recorded in studio... In 1984 they also performed instrumental which later recorded as Kookaburra.

If we are, indeed, speaking of the track from the Live in London 1986 bootleg--does anyone else think that it bears a vague resemblance to Circling Girl?
I have often wondered whether or not CG might have been a reworked/metamorphosed version of this instrumental.
Can't comment on the London thing but the Portsmouth one was like a better developed My Hue and Cry in style.

on the "live in london" bootleg, towards the end i keep hearing
"fotzepolitic",maybe it's just me:confused:
We can sort this thing out if somebody tells me how can I put this online available to you to listen to it. I have no website, but with the proper instructions I can upload my copy for you to judge.
Contact me, I'll do it gladly.
My regards from the pampas...
we are talking about 1986 tour, so both tracks are exactly the same. you may find this song on many (if not any) of 1986 bootlegs.
this track is featured @ ct.com media section entitled as "My Hue and Cry live version" - check it out and find answer to your questions.
BTW Maybe I'm deaf, but I can't find any relation between this song and one recorded during Peel Session (even in category of progress, evolving etc.)
second live track is from 1984 and may I call it pre-kookaburra, i believe you meant this one leesa...

Yes I definitely agree Adam. The track was certainly not a developed version of ‘My Hue and Cry’. It was clearly something else. It just had a similarity in style/vibe in perhaps the same way Aikea Guinea is similar to From The Flagstones?
Hey man, did anyone ever tell you, you bear more than a passing resemblance to Pacey from Dawsons Creek! Geezer!

I know the track of which you speak. I downloaded it out of curiosity when Napster still lived and breathed.
Assuming it's the same one, it has the feel of "Circling Girl", with a few sevenths chucked in there as a bridge.
It sounds very experimental and Liz says "thank you" at the end.
Same one?

:bump:
I'm bumping this 4-year old thread because recently someone emailed me asking me this exact question. It seems that indeed the general consensus is that during the 1986 live tour the track which became labeled "Instrumental" is indeed a live version of "My Hue & Cry." If you listen to MH&C on BBC Sessions and compare it any of the 1986 live "Instrumental" tracks, I think you will agree that it does sound like a re-working of MH&C. To be absolutely certain on this though, I think it would be great if Robin or Simon could confirm or deny this for us.

I seem to recall someone who replied stating that Robin was PM'ed the question and he said that it wasn't My Hue and Cry. It was a long time ago, though, so I could be mistaken.
I disagree :) I never thought it sounded much like My Hue and Cry.

Must agree with the nay-sayers. It doesn't sound a bit like My Hue & Cry. I bought the individually signed and numbered, apparent bootleg of the '86 concert many moons ago. Also had the vinyl bootleg back in the day with the real MH&C. Years of listening have not exposed subtle layers of similarity to my ears, nor to any other of their tunes hitherto nor henceforth.
