View Full Version : Uncut review
we've just got the latest Uncut in stock - I don't have time to type it all up, but David Stubbs gives Garlands three stars, Head Over Heels four stars, Treasure five stars and Victorialand two stars, and its given the four albums "reissue of the month" (I'm assuming that's for Treasure)
There's a small Q&A with Simon as well at the side
thought some might be interested!

lol matt!
well having now taken the aforesaid sneeky peek, i can tell you no such comments were made. but WHS is very good for that.. letting people browse before they decide to buy (or not), which i think isn't a bad policy. ok, so in this case i admit i read the piece of interest to me and didn't buy the mag.. but if you were only allowed to judge a magazine (or book) by its cover (which as the saying goes, you can't), then you'd end up with all sorts of stuff you didn't want.
as in.. the new version of Uncut features Bruce Springsteen (ugh!). see what i mean? :D

Is it just me or does the Boss look constipated when he sings. By the way, with apologies to any members of the board who are from New Jersey, if he is "The Boss", than I hereby tender my resignation. :)

roflmao Constipated in the USA!
Matt,
I'm with you! Have you noticed that the constipation gets even worse when he tries to dance, or whatever the hell it is that he does when he takes off his guitar and waddles around all bound up and stiff looking...BTW I do a really good impersonation of Bosstipation that always leaves my wife in stitches...I will be more than happy to give a demonstration if I can make the Cocteaufest...I may get stage fright though.....hmmmmmmm, maybe that's whats ailing the Boss?

I know what you mean about the dancing, it always amazes me that this is how Courtney Cox was discovered, pulled on stage to "dance" the Bosstipation with the man himself in the seminal "Dancing In The Dark" video...

yeah i know, shame on me..
i was actually tempted to buy it. should've have taken advantage of WHSmith's 'hospitality' to see if the other articles were worth reading! :D
ah well, tomorrow's another day, right? ;)
I have said issue here and I'm disappointed in the review to be honest. It's a little short and lightweight. I thought it might have been a good opportunity for an article. They did so successfully when a few of The Sound's albums were re-issued last year. A really good, modest piece on Adrian Borland and The Sound to accompany the album review elsewhere. Next issue the letters page was dominated by feedback on The Sound. A really successful piece of journalism allowing those who missed The Sound first time around (as I myself nearly did) to find them while the older fans were alerted to the re-issues. The Sound deserved it and so do fans of good music.
The one part of the review I liked was a line that said something like - While the CT's existed in post punk they anticipated post rock. Too true. Merits an article doesn't it? They made it re-issue of the month.
And...
...I know we're all biased here but we're not incapable of objective thought are we? Victorialand - two stars? Come on!

this brings up an interesting dilemma with regard to these reviews:
do we read them as critiques of the original release version versus the new remastered version?
or
do we read them simply as critiques of a reissued release (without regard to any sonic differences from the original counterpart?)
iow, someone who gave 2 stars to Victorialand years ago is now simply assigning it the same 2 stars after the most recent listen....regardless of sonic or textural improvements in the remastering process.
or.....does this mean that, for this writer, the Victorialand remastered version really is in some way inferior from the others.
confusing, ain't it.
i say: lack of clarity; blame the writer.
