View Full Version : "Who makes the best music?"

Quick anecdote- back in '89 when I was playing in bands and such and gobbling up every single piece of music I could get my hands on, I called my bass player- who was equally obsessed with listening to music 24 hours a day as well- and said "OK, listen. We listen to all these bands and we talk about all these different records and musicians. Let's settle this- who makes the best music?"

Without hesitation (and in a tone of voice that expressed disbelief for asking such an obvious question) he said, "The Cocteau Twins."

And I hope you corrected him?

Did he have a history of mental illness?

Ignore them Knoll. The late great John Peel introduced them as The Cocteau Twins so if it's good enough for him it can be good enough for you. There were no other Cocteau Twins as far as I can remember so 'the' is arguably appropriate from that respect.

In my own opinion you can never settle this. I don't think about bands, or artists in terms of "who is the best?"... There is a place for everyone who has something interesting to say. It's not a competition. In fact Art to me is one of the last "areas" we get a chance to free ourselves of this insane social competition we get trapped in. It's a place of freedom.
Different people respond to different aesthetics... And although I love Cocteau Twins I can never say they make the best music... I'm grateful there are many people who have made music and keep making music for us all to listen and enjoy. Including The the for instance ;)

Well done Anchor - at last a voice of reason. What is best after all? Define it and maybe we could debate it. Of course it is both personal and indefinable. The Wedding Present made George Best - so maybe Gedge makes the best music! But Mogwai have just made Zidane. And Zidane is better than Best. So the answer is Mogwai! They're post best!

Hmm? Should that be The Wedding Present?
Should The The be the The The? Or just The?

Bloody excellent, btw, Matt Johnson! What's this about an advert? Which song?
