View Full Version : Cocteau Twins in Asia

I recently had the chance to spend some time in Beijing. My family are all journalists and my mother had landed a job as an editor at China Daily News so I scrapped up all the time I could and spent a month in China with her. One of the surprising things I found over there was a real Cocteau Twins fan base. I heard several of their songs at clubs (djs had made their own mixes of the songs) and was really surprised to discover that there is a singer who has covered at least of their songs. Her name is Faye Wong and I have to admit that its rather strange listening to the opening strains of Evangeline and then suddenly hearing a voice singing in Chinese (or possibly it was Japanese, I don't know I was too surprised to ask that fact). Any way I got a couple of her tracks on tape from a dj and have recently found mp3s of these tracks as well. I hadn't seen it mentioned on the board so I thought I'd mention it. Someone might be interested.

Mmmender,

Maybe if you get a chance you could write a review of some of Faye's cover versions. Better still would be if you posted some MP3 Tracks for us to download.

Am I asking too much?

hey
yah faye basically does carbons of cocteau, cranberries etc. basically just a good copy cat. nothing much more than that. but yah she is big in asia. kind of felt weird about cocteau working with her. almost as if it was a purely commercial decision to help them break into asian market. it worked but it scared me. didnt think faye added anything to cocteau... like whats the diff in adding another layer of liz's voice versus adding another layer of a copy of liz's voice?
sorry if i just sound grumpy
btw i live in singapore....faye is a goddess here....

there is a site that actually *bashes* faye, comparing her to cocteau twins, tori amos, bjork, madonna and anthony wong.

actually i found this information on a very pretty site called the cocteau twins atlas, which has reviews of all cocteau and liz songs by this girl.
there were 2 songs which cocteau twins had written specially for faye, called Fracture and repressing happiness. the cocteaus themselves later made their own versions, entitled Tranquil eye and Touch upon touch.
