arrived today
volume 17 which contains
touch upon touch*
according to the booklet touch upon touch
was the first track cocteau twins released after leaving 4AD
i had always thought it was recorded durring the milk & kisses session
based purely on the "fact" that it sounds closer in atmosphere to
seekers who are lovers than anything on FCC
any thoughts
*played the cd as soon as i got home form work have only ever heard a downloaded mp3 version before - sounds so lovely ;-)

I don't know the exact date that it was recorded but I do know that it was actually released first on another compilation called "Splashed With Many A Speck". That was put out by Brant Nelson on his label "Dewdrops Records" The CD is now long out of print, this what the cover looks like:
http://cdbaby.com/covers/s/p/splashed.jpg
For the record the version of "Touch Upon Touch" that is on Volume 17 is the exact same version that appears on "Splashed"
The song was initially written by Cocteau Twins for Faye Wong, who herself also recorded a version....I think under the title "Repressing Happiness" from the "Impatience" album. Also on the same album CT wrote the song "Fracture" which CT later released as "Tranquil Eye". Now, I'm pretty sure that Faye's album was released in 1996, but that doesn't reveal exactly when CT wrote them for her initially.
While there are two versions of "Touch" 1) a Cocteau Twins version with Liz on vocals 2) a Faye Wong version . .....there are 3 versions of "Serpentskirt" - rarest being the one with both Faye and Liz singing, only available on the Asian edition of "Serpentskirt" available in Asian countries (excluding Japan), or else the elusive "Serpentskirt" CD single.....which I paid a small fortune for.
I know that doesn't really answer your question but I thought you might find the rest of the information interesting or useful. (Some lyrics too below)
=========================
Fracture
Music: Cocteau Twins Lyrics: Lin Xi
fracture fracture
smile's innocence harmlessness on one side
seeing through everything on the other
fracture fracture
love's exhaustion fatigue on one side
nothing's abandoned on the other
it's me has embraced you
a drip a drop
keeping in hand
it's you have embraced me
without a fissure
to let me breathe
fracture fracture
resolutely confronting everything on one side
planting seeds on the other
fracture fracture
to guard a one person's world
to bleed two person's blood
it's that embrace's tragedy
one half of heat
one half of coldness
it's that embrace's tragedy
one half of sky
one half of earth
(reminiscence's cells continuously fracturing... fracture fracture)
it's that embrace's tragedy
a bit of me a bit of you
(reminiscence's cells continuously fracturing... fracture fracture)
it's that embrace's tragedy
a bit of man a bit of woman
it's that embrace's tragedy
a side of blue
a side of green
it's that embrace's tragedy
pretend nothingness
summoning sky stealing earth
(reminiscence's cells continuously fracturing... fracture fracture)
it's that embrace's tragedy
scaring sky shaking earth
plain and ordinary
(reminiscence's cells continuously fracturing... fracture fracture)
a pair of eyes to see a countenance of kindness
to open a pair of eyes yet seeing a countenance of arrogance
psyche following you to another world
body yet seems like a wingless butterfly
seeing you i'll begin to see emptiness
when not seeing you
to confront myself yet am a bit frightened
fracture fracture
sometimes resolutely confronting everything
sometimes needing to plant seeds
fracture fracture
to guard a one person's world
to bleed two person's blood
fracture fracture
smile's innocence harmlessness on one side
seeing through everything on the other
fracture fracture
love's exhaustion fatigue on the other

Repressing Happiness
Music: Cocteau Twins Lyrics: Lin Xi
stacking stacking cards
you a move of hand to have me falling
drinking drinking cola
you a turn of head
to have me crying
disguising disguising happiness
you a look to have me unable to disguise
forgetting forgetting solitariness
your a question to have me thinking
* oh always not wasting a blow of ashes
you have me from that dream world
running away
(oh) always so effortlessly
you tell me from where
the depths of white clouds
falling*
@ cautious patience you without paying attention
to have me hurdling
very easily amused
your one sentence
to have me turning bad
whole life waiting
your within a second to have me awaken
freely induce in bordeom
your a pan of cold water
thrown towards me@
repeat *@*

do u know leesa, if there exists a complilation disc of all of the tracks that faye sang either wrtten for her or the ones she covered - i believe that she did eight cocteau tracks in total if you include amusement park - again i have them as mp3 but would be lovely if i could get them all on one promo disc

There are certainly a couple of bootleg CDs out there - a guy in China quite lovingly put them together. Don't think there's anything official though.

hi bearclaw
i don't think the booklet mentions 4ad- if i understand it correctly touch is the first track released after they parted company with fontana/mercury- not after they left 4ad.
volume 17 appeared in december 1996 (or thereabouts)-so it could be left over form the m&k sessions form the previous year, although i've always wondered if it was recorded at around the same time as the uncompleted album- CT did sometimes give volume early results of new recording sessions (frosty the snowman, circling girl)
hope this helps

If you would like, I will post the Faye Wong tracks up onto my esnips page for you all to listen and download. There is a live CT version of Touch Upon Touch already up there from Boston.

never heard of it. and doubt it is a fan's "remix"

3 versions? I just got 2versions. oh, I heard many years ago, there is a version of ONLY faye's voice. but never get it. I think that's the rarest thing..

Thanks. Maybe it's the paranoid in me who's hoping you're not being sarcastic!
