It is not French but just Elizabeth's phonetic genius.
I've said it before but if you listen to " I wear your ring" she does a wonderful work making her "English" sound French.
I speak French and I've studied phonetics and Liz is just amazing at combining sounds AND remembering them.
In " Toch Upon Touch" she uses some combinations from French and even German but the whole lyrics must be her own invention, very much in the manner of Melonella.
Now that we are on the subject, one of the things I hated in the Cleopatra
tribute to the Cocteaus was that from millisecond one you could tell that -with the odd exception-the singers were from this or that part in the United States, because they sounded so American!,whereas Liz,while sounding English, has this whole range of unique sounds from different languages that makes her singing so unique and difficult to place.
The best track in that tribute was "Garlands" by The Autumns, precisely because the singer was not attempting to achieve the impossible.
I've just listened to Volume 17's "Touch upon Touch" ,followed by Geneva's
"Closer to the stars" , what a fine and beautiful song this is !!!!!

From a Quotes by Faye Wong website:

"I sent her the lyrics but she didn't sing them, she did what I do, which is making up words, and I don't sound Chinese at all..."
Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins, on Serpentskirt)
