when a friend of yours, who has never heard of cocteau twins, asks you what they're all about and suggests that you make them a compilation disc.....do you find this as difficult a task as i do? i never know where to begin and often find myself sitting there asking myself questions like "hmm now should i start rough and raw with something off garlands or go slow and easy with victorialand or maybe a bit poppy with heaven or las vegas?"

I usually take favorites from each album, and put them in chronological order. Not to say that I'll follow the order of the album, I'll switch the order of the songs I pick to what has an appropriate 'feel', and it's a little different each time, but I use the chronological order because it then allows the new listener to hear how the band has progressed through many years in just a short period of time. Granted, sometimes it takes more than 1 tape/CD to accomplish this, but I find it to be effective. Once a person decides they like what they hear and wants more, then I'll do more mixing and matching. Good question, Mmmender! I'm curious as to what answers it will bring.

Interesting question, fun for me being one who tries this out...
I follow Lucibelle's reasoning on chronology and do so too...

As for inbtween, I've encountered very mixed opinions....though more across the catalog that within in a song.
Meaning more people seem to love the songs they do like, but I find many that dislike considerable portions(mostly of the old stuff, though M&K was not been as well received of my listening acquaintances either) or just think it is so so....

Anyway, deciding what to make for people is typically an easy process and fun, not because I know exactly what they will like(I don't)...but I typically know what area to start in, whether or not they'll like the early(esp. the 'gothic', a silly term at best IMO), the mid-early(85-87), or the late stuff....if I don't have a sense of that...I aim for a cross section, though tend to choose more of my favorites. Basically, if they have well defined tastes and a collection of their own which I've heard, I can often gear the mix accordingly.....

Some of the mixed responses I've got:
- Many dislike wailing and prefer soft ethereal voiced Liz...this is actually a substantial dividing line from what I've seen.
- Some dislike early(pre-Simon) stuff all around(esp. the 'gothic')...
- Some dislike the older drum machine sounds(so no pre-BBK mostly...).
- Some like the mid-early years for their dated but still soft ethereal sound...sound less produced but softer, as opposed to what they consider over-produced later stuff

i usually have a lot of people around me who have never ever sadly enough heard of the ct. so i keep a huge supply of cd-rw on hand. i ask them "what would you like to get out of this experience? what do you like" "what is your mood today?"

when they answer i begin my process and i start compiling a bunch of stuff. so to me, whatever the person is feeling and i can successfully connect that song and how i felt that matches what the person is feeling, i record.......too complex?

that is me
