Perhaps this has been floated before, and there are--and have been, of course--other "Elizabeth Frasers" in the world, but I thought this was a good one.
In Australia, there's an island named Fraser Island. It is named for a sea captain and his wife, Elizabeth, who were shipwrecked and washed ashore there in the 19th Century. They took up with the native inhabitants of the area, and her husband eventually died. She, however, was finally able to return to England and wound up in a mental institution.
Her story was the inspiration for a novel, written in the 1970s, entitled A Fringe of Leaves.
I came across this tidbit while randomly reading an Australian travel guide. I might be going there in August for a couple of weeks. Anyone on this list from Melbourne or Sydney?
