A little bird tells me that the Pearly Dewdrop's Drops video will soon be officially available to download from i-Tunes, followed shortly afterwards by Carolyn's Fingers & HOLV. Some Lush videos will also be available, and maybe at some point in the near future some Kirsten Hirsh.

Personally, i don't think this is good news, if 4AD are releasing the videos this way, it could well mean that they wont bother with a compilation DVD

I was trying to be funny.
I failed miserably apparently.
If DVDs had decent jobs, they'd make money.

It could also be a way of testing demand--if they do well on iTunes, perhaps a DVD would follow.

Are you for real? Was this 4AD's doing? I guess it probably was, since I think all of the rights reverted back to them not too long ago.

It's so ironic considering the problem I had with 4AD and Cocteau videos copyright issues......they were so adamant about protecting your material, at least where I was concerned......yet now they're the one's abusing it themselves.

This really is despicable.

I'll have to be sure to mention this in my next 'Hearsay' forum newsletter so that it will at least help discourage people from purchasing them from iTunes.

That letter states they are the sole copyright holder, and if this is correct then presumably they would therefore have the rights to publish them. You would think they'd ask the artist first however - after all it's their images that appear on-screen.

considering that "pearly dewdrops' drops" was *not* your (or any of the other cocteaus) particular favourite =D

seriously, i can empathize.

I suppose this goes without saying, but we should boycott buying the videos from i-tunes, besides, you can view them on youtube for free anyway, i know Robin doesn't benefit from this, but at least we are not lining 4ADs pockets yet again.

Right now 4AD aren't making a lot of money from this. iTunes are asking everyone for all their videos. I'm currently sending over 25 a week to them across the entire Beggars Group catalogue - from all of our artists - not just the Cocteaus. Everyone's videos will be for sale, and in turn, when sales go through, the artists, if recouped (like the Cocteaus), will get royalties. You can't ask for fairer than that, can you?

Robin, if you object to these being available (we've sent all the Cocteaus videos now, I have no idea how long it'll take iTunes to get them ready and for sale, it does take a long time), then feel free to drop me an email, I can arrange to have them removed from iTunes, if you don't want them up there? I'll have to get confirmation from the other bandmembers, before it can be actioned - but I can make a note of your objection to this.

iTunes are exceptionally keen to get everyone's videos up there - so I'd maybe check with any other labels you've been signed to, as chances are those ones may also appear in the future! As more digital services start to offer videos for sale, they'll be automatically sent out.

Hope that clears things up a bit, anyway. There's a long list over at the 4AD forums of all the titles sent so far (I think all the Lush ones are gone, definitely most Throwing Muses and Breeders and Kristin Hersh too, if anyone is interested).

. . . (we've sent all the Cocteaus videos now). . .

I wonder if that includes the Pink Orange Red performance that has served as an ?unofficial? video. Given there are no clear copies of this out there, I bet even the protesters would be tempted to check that out.?.?

They're not 'abusing' it though, are they? The label are the copyright holders, they are legally entitled to send them to iTunes for sale.

I don't think that it's ironic that this has happened now, so soon after you got that letter. It's part of the same thing: there's obviously been a semi-long term plan here to ensure the survival (in the marketplace) of the videos of all 4AD artists.

Think about it: most 4AD artists wouldn't really sell enough to justify printing a massive run of DVDs, would they? It would require a reasonably large capital outlay for manufacture, design, and then promotion - that's not really going to happen when a company like 4AD can't even afford to put bands like Mojave 3 on the road (in their native UK!) or to promote their albums.

However, making artist videos available digitally means maximum returns possible for the copyright holder, with next to no upfront spending! It's a no brainer - money for nothing!

(Of course to ensure the sale of the videos on iTunes, you have to clamp down on anybody selling unauthorised versions of the videos online... such as in a Cocteau Twins fan clubs and forums.... etc etc).

I'm not saying that I agree with this situation, or even that I totally agree with the business reasoning behind it. In fact I'm in a similar situation with my band at the moment (who shall remain nameless!). It's really harsh. But that's record companies for you!

not meaning to start any heated debate but what I find ironic is the sentence in the original letter to Leesa that states

"... we have sole authority to use and commercially exploit the Videos ..."

interesting choice of word?

So this process seems to have died in it's tracks. Four up; there was talk of the whole catalog getting up there. Anyone know the scoop?
