View Full Version : The Ultimate Band List For Cocteau Twins Fans

mmmender
Dec-6-07, 10:49 PM
We've had similar threads about this topic before, but they're all scattered in different threads. Let's make one definite list of other bands that you would recommend to fans of Cocteau Twins. Include bands that you like and think other fans of CT would also like, and maybe bands you think have a similar sound/vocals or bands you would consider to be in the same genre as Cocteau Twins. Once everyone has made their contributions, I'll add them all to one big list and keep it in the first post of this thread for easy reference for other forum visitors.

Yes, especially their first album with Talitha McKenzie on vocals. Their version of Fraoch A Ronaigh, that she sung live in a stairwell, is absolutely haunting.

Waterlillies- Envoluptuosity
Woob - 1194
CocoRosie- La Mason de Mon Reve

Here's a group who recorded one my favorite EPs of all time- and perhaps the most CT-like of all:

EVERLASTING GOBBSTOPPER

Anybody heard of this band and/or song? apparently they used to be The Veldt, who opened for CT years ago. that is a great song -- one of my faves of the year. the album, on the other hand, sucks eggs. that one song is the only fully realized idea the band had. the rest of the record is sketches, demos, and "things they should have spent more time on". IMO, of course.

as to CT-like bands, you're forgetting Bethany Curve (http://www.bethanycurve.com/home.html).
remember their set of CT covers at the LA Fest? sublime... however, it appears their website hasn't been upadted in years. i wonder if the band has gone "dormant"..... sigh.

also, there was a Mexican dreampop act named Nona Delichas that i reviewed (http://www.evilsponge.org/albums/Nona%20Delichas__AiresDeBocacalle.htm) a while back. i just got email from them (in Spanish -- i had to get Google to translate it!) inviting me to see them play in Guadalajara in some new act... so another deceased band. but check out that record if you can find it.

I like this album a lot but it took a few listens to get there. I think because I'm in Love with a German Filmstar is such a fantastic song, it eclipses everything else. This is a shame as there's some good tunes here.

I'm probably too close to the album, after all these years, to imagine coming to it fresh after listening to the Cocteau Twins, instead of the other way round.

But I'd recommend that anyone lucky enough to find a copy starts with German Film Star, and then works through the more twinkly guitar numbers (Alice's Song, Someone Special, The Swimmer, The Square) through the more straight-ahead songs (Runaways, Bachelor Girls, Strange Affair) and then enjoy the two hypnotic side-closers Skin Deep and Small Stones.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for me, also a few other old scottish bands like the Soup Dragons, The Pastels, Malcolm Middleton, Arab Strap.

Sound track to Vampyros Lesbos, Duritti Column, The Slits, The Banshees obviously the most influential on the Cocteau's, Mum, Sigur Ros, Stereolab, Gus Gus.

All good obscure but delightful bands and musicians. I would heartily recommend to but any Roisin Murphy material and to see her live.

some bands not yet mentioned;

Stina Nordenstam (especially track 'Ask the mountains' with Vangellis).
Banco De Gaia (especially the joyeous album 'The magical sounds of').
Rumskib (A new band who SO wanna be the Twins, and not too shabby neither).
Claudia Brucken (single 'Kiss like ether' is heavenly).
Nina Hagen (Album 'Nun Sex Monk Rock' for its nutty post-punk eccenttricity).

Sorry, I just noticed this. All I could really find was this: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Beautiful+Pea+Green+Boat

I first discovered BPGB on a Doctor Death compilation on C'est La Mort records (which was sort of Louisiana's answer to 4AD), and then heard a few more of their songs on other goth-type comps. They're vaguely Cocteau-ish, on the more ethereal, high vocals tip, with some folksy/medieval elements (like using the occasional trad medieval instrument).

For folks into Xymox, you might check out Handful of Snowdrops, another C'est La Mort signing, who, similarly to Beautiful Pea Green Boat, had a short-lived existence.

"Spooky" by Lush is one of my all time favorite albums. Something to do with the production perhaps...........? (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Insides-"Euphoria"....I wish they had put out another album as good as this one.

I'm very much into Clinic these days when I want to rock out. I like the way they go from noisy speed punk to high school slow dance with such ease.

Also, I'm eagerly awaiting the Breeders new album. I love Kim Deal's simple aesthetic and breathy vocal style.

The last 2 aren't exactly in the CT's style, but that's what makes the world go round.

Is there a reason no one has mentioned The Glee Club? Will I be chastised mercilessly for having done it? Their affection for Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine apparently drew them to 4AD. They didn't last long, but they made some pretty sounds. I think.

One of my favourite bands of all time. LOVE LOVE LOVE Jennifer Charles's lazy pur.

Fovea Hex (http://www.myspace.com/foveahex)

Another one I love. Stumbled across it while wondering what on earth the Mellow Candle vocalists were up to since "Swaddling Songs" came out. Did a search, found out abour Fovea Hex, read the list of co-conspirators, many of whom I admire as musicians, and just had to get me some!!!

I also have a soft spot for Sophie Barker. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Another one of my favourites is Swedish band Paatos (Petronella Nettermalm has a lovely voice!!!).

http://www.paatos.com/

I'd recommend listening to samples from the "music" section of their site, since their myspace only has songs from the live album. (Try "Tea", "Holding On", "Gasoline").

Absolutely love this band.

I am shocked and ashamed to discover, that no one, not one single person, has listed the Trashcan Sinatras.

So there. Trashcan Sinatras. Love them. Their last "Weightlifting" from 2004 was magnificent. But the album to get first is "Cake" from 1989.

I also reiterate every reference to The Sundays as much as humanly possible. I saw them in 1993 and they were splendiferously marvelous. Slightly more engaging than Liz, Robin, and Simon were that year when I saw them as well.

If I may,

While most of the following artists aren't of the CT ilk, they still invoke in me a similiarly serene reverie that most folks would describe as being "blissed out". So here goes:
The Sea and Cake
Lush (Of Course)
Yo La Tengo
Tsunami (Jennifer Toomey is a force of nature)
Opus III (Mainly Guru Mother)
Fryderyk Chopin
Stereolab (Equally as prolific)
The Ocean Blue
Astrud Gilberto
Black Tambourine
The Sundays (Of Course)
Slowdive
Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions
Nick Drake
The Red House Painters
Slumber Party
Dissolve
The Meeting Places
Tristeza
Helium
Belle and Sebastian
Chet Baker
And Well, I Could Go On, But....

i forgot DestroyAllDreamers. They are instrumental cocteau twin-ish sounding. A lot like Dif Juz too.

Another vote for The Delays - http://www.thedelays.co.uk/ - my favourite band of the last few years. And The Editors, especially if you like Garlands

Old school: Shelleyan Orphan, Lush, This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance (also Lisa and Brendan's solo stuff), Kate Bush, Hugo Largo, The Innocence Mission, Cowboy Junkies

Tom Waits, the whole rain dogs album is amazing

Mano Chau, Me gustas tu

hank williams> my buckets got a hole in it

Other than that, I'm basically tired of that new wave goth junk, I wore out my tapes by the 90's. Very few bands stuck, neworder, love and rockets, smiths, but not cure, depeche, I cant stand them anymore. It makes my eyes vomit
