Jellyfish/Maor Avni did the Victorialake re-edit. When I was last in contact with him (~late '99/early 2000), he told me he had done re-edits of all but one of the full-length albums and some of the EP's as well. The other stuff doesn't seem to have gotten nearly the circulation that Victorialake has, I think largely because Maor decided not to sell them after communicating with Simon about it. (Some of you may recall that Maor was selling Victorialake on eBay at one time.) The only other "Maor" edits I've heard were a couple of the EP ones that appeared on a compil. bootleg cassette I got in a trade. Can't remember much about them--haven't listened to that tape in ages. --Alan
Felt nostalgic and looked through Leesa's wonderfully detailed CTorg discography and realized have never heard Victorialake.
How is this different than Victorialand? Does it have anything to do with the Massive Attack remix?

Ernie,
Victorialake is a bootleg remix (or re-edit) of Victorialand. It was done a few years ago by an Israeli fan named Maor Avni (aka Jellyfish).
He created the album using music software (not sure which prog). Some parts are looped and extended, so that the final runtime is something like 17 mins. longer than the orig. album. I like it pretty well, but then (as everyone knows by now) I'm a hardcore junky for these things. :headbang:
If I remember correctly, Maor once told me that he'd done similar re-edits of all but one of the full-length CT albums, and some EP tracks as well. But not much else seems to have gotten circulated. The only other "Maor" edits I have are Aikea Guinea and one or two other EP tracks.
BTW, You may have already heard one of Maor's other CT-related works. He did the Great Spangled Fritillary cover (under the name "subdew") on the Half-Gifts CT tribute CD.
Edit: Nope, no relation to the Massive remix of Thinner the Air.

So, I never got a clear picture/understanding of the VictoriaLAKE bootleg, or whatever it is...
I mean, where's it from?... How many were made orginally, and when?... How many tracks, and how altered from the originals on Victorialand?... Is it worth searching for, and if so, Where might I find it?
I'd appreciate any insight someone in the know might offer on VictoriaLAKE...
THANX!!!

i have a copy that i got in trade. _Victorialake_ was done by DJ Jelly, who was (is ? ) based out of Haifa, Israel.
it's an "edit" not a "mix". basically, he fed all of the songs into his comptuer and painstakingly re-edited them, making them longer. imagine the floating intro to "Lazy Calm" going on for another minute or so before the saxaphone kicks in. that's what he did....
there is one exception: when he "edited" Oominmak, he combined the two versions (regular album version and instrumental version from the boxed set) together, so that the vocals on his version float in and out....
on the whole i think that _Victorialake_ is a pretty impressive effort. obviously DJ Jelly spend a ton of time working on this. the transitions that he made really do sound seamless.... however, well, for the most part it sounds wrong to me. i expect the sax to kick in at the appropriate time, and when it doesn't i find it disconcerting....
hope that answers your question. i do not know how many copies DJ Jelly made. however, if you really want to hear it, PM me and we can work something out....

Thanx a lot for all the info! I think it wouldn't sound right to me, either...
as i consider Victorialake as one of the best record ever by the Cocteaus and as the songs are much too short for me, this version is a delight for me because DJ Jelly didn't alter the songs with weird techno remixes. he just made them longer.
and the longer the better, no ?
this is an essential recording to their discography.

I see your point, too, and with further thought, would say that longer versions of "Throughout the Dark Months..."; "The Thinner the Air"; and "How to Bring a Blush to the Snow" do especially intrigue me, as I never want them to end while they're playing...
Hmmmmm... Maybe I'll go on the hunt for a copy after all...
Victoria lake is far from a mistake, Victoria the first, I have to say I cursed, cause its beauty was cut short, so now I will retort,as corny as all this seems, Mr DJ Jelly, made a record from my Cocteau Dreams, so now from my face a pure, smile, doth ,beam I know I know," But I Could'nt resist, I love this version, specially at bath time. with all the pretty spangled bubbles, peace GoodRobn :snowman: :baby:

Yeah but those 150 have spawned thousands more I would think. Mine was sent free to me by an Ebayer I bought from because he thought I would like it. There are bootlegs of bootlegs of bootlegs out there these days - that's why it's amusing when people try and use the selling point that it copy number n of 1000, becuse you know full well there are multiple versions of every number from 1 to 1000 out there.
Who cares, if your copy is the first,or 151st, I sure don't give a rodents hiney, I just like the disc, why does it seem there is a large group of Cocteau Snobs on this site, For my self, their music is an intimate exsperience, no one can take away from me, peace out, :calla:

The advantage, Baal, is that there is oft no knowledge amongst the general assembly of the very existence of some of the items in the real CT freaks' collections.
Not many folks know that there was a DAT release of "Bluebell Knoll", for instance (I have only seen two ever...one on eBay and one in Leesa's collection) and the "Victorialake" thing is, I would surmise, not well known either.
How many people know that there is a rare 3" version of "Iceblink Luck" out there? For those amongst us who crave new CT targets to hunt down across the web (not including me, I hasten to add, mate...I gave up haunting the likes of eBay for CT rarities a long time ago), this is valuable information to be armed with.

I'm sorry if you feel I was being snobby - I thought I was making a valid point that the original 150 had spawned thousands of other copies. I then made a point regarding people who attempt to sell them. Maybe you thought I was implying they were attempting to con people by stating it was a numbered edition, but I choose to believe that in most cases they simply aren't aware.
Am I a Cocteau Snob? Well not where the music is concerned I don't think. One of the beauties of this site is that there are people that dislike certain tracks with a passion whilst others adore them - you will never get 100% agreement as to what's good or bad. What makes this site special is that the residents accept this and whilst there may be some teasing goes on we have in general a very relaxed attitude towards it. If you posted similar on some fan sites you'd be deluged under such a flame war you wouldn't stay.
As far as collecting is concerned then yes, I probably am a snob. I've been collecting CT goodies for over 20 years and it has been one of the few consistant things in my life during that time, and I think I've earned the right to be a snob if I want to be :)

Baal08, your interpretations seem a bit hypersensitive. Relax. Rule #1 on this forum: hypersensitivity is bad. As internet forums go, this one is more friendly, more permissive, and more 'community' oriented than MOST. Trust me on this one.
There are only a couple of hardcore completist collectors around here, and they rarely talk about their stuff, unless it is to give information to someone who asked for it. I've been a CT fan for over 20 years and before joining this forum, I knew nothing about 95% of the live recordings and bootlegs that are out there. (for the record, I still have never heard 90% of them)
We're a diverse group here. You are part of it if you want to be. Nobody is out to crush you because you are less of a CT fan than they are. I mean, shit, probably 95% of my posts on this forum have nothing to do with Cocteau Twins. Some might not even call me a true fan!
Peace. Salaam Alaiykum. Shalom. Chizzle in tha hizzle, yo.
Okay, but where can one obtain a copy of Victorialake? Longer versions of victorialand tracks sounds excellent to me.

The clue is in the words ..... paid memberships only - if youve paid you can get in but there isn't a file server there, so it's kind of ... silly. it's a place where people can talk about file sharing... i guess there was a server at one point in time. i actually have a spare dead server at home. if i can ever find the time to get it functioning, i could put it up for Dials. but that's a big "if"....

oops apologies - I thought I couldnt get in cos Im not paid up !!
The file servers that have been listed have never been 'official' - they've just been donated by people who were prepared to host. Peoples circumstances change & the servers get withdrawn etc etc. Last I heard the owner had put some kind of limit on how much you could download without uploading in return. That was months ago though and I'm afraid I don't know the current situation with it.
I have a server and could host it for a little while. Not permanently though, I have a monthly bandwidth limit.
The clue is in the words ..... paid memberships only - if youve paid you can get in
isn't strange that people have to pay to discuss file-sharing and the fee doesn't even allow to a server ? i mean as the Cocteau Twins won't see the light of a part of this fee, isn't this "amoral" ?
file-sharing shouldn't be mixed with money. it's a sort of respect to the bands we admire. If the moneywould go to them i'd be glad to pay.
just a thought. no harm feelings intented.
You get use of these forums for free, and you can discuss file-sharing as much as you want. It is not free for leesa to provide the forums however - she has to pay for servers, bandwidth, software licences and the like. When the files were first made available all was fine for a couple of weeks, but it wasn't long before the number of people (mostly non-registered) that were downloading and, more significantly, the number of robot programs that were accessing the server was substantially overloading the bandwidth that was available. A way therefore had to be found to stop this and that wasn't straight forward using this forum software.
Originally people had been asked for voluntary donations to help with the running expenses of this site. Leesa preferred however to try and provide something for that donation, hence the creation of the Gold Dust membership. Unfortunately the take-up was not big and she cannot afford to host the files herself, hence the reliance on the generosity of others to host. People's circumstances change however and servers that were available become unavailable etc etc. Many people downloaded, but as you would expect new material was thin on the ground so there was little reason to return to it once you had downloaded. This means in general it's only the new Gold Dust Members who were trying to access and there haven't been too many of them recently. I agree that it isn't perhaps the most satisfactory of situations, but to be honest it's been a low priority compared to some of the other things that have been going on.
I'm sure that when leesa is back she'll let us have an update of the current situation, but if you have any suggestions for improving the situation or have the ability to host the files on a long-term basis then please feel free to get in touch.
For my part I gladly donate my $12 because that is a tiny price to pay for what I get out of these forums. Whether I get to some sound files for that $12 is an insignificant factor for me.

I have to say that i'm in the "I Love Victorialake" camp, DJ Jelly did an excellent job of these edits, some worked, others didn't, but the joy of having something different to listen to by the Cocteau Twins is always a pleasure!!.
Apart from the Victorialake CD, he also made Frou-Frou Foxy Fire (Heaven Or Las Vegas edits), The Blue Bell (Blue Bell Knoll Edits), Those Tears, That Love (Aikea Guinea & Love's Easy Tears EPs Edits), Milk My Kisses (Milk & Kisses Edits), In The Rosary (Garlands Edits) & All My Mortal Edits which contained various remixes from Pearly Dewdrops, otherness, Lullabies & album tracks.
I know that he sent some of these edits to Simon Raymond to hear, who thought they didn't really add much to the originals, but i don't think that was the real point of them anyway, it was just Jelly having fun with them, it's something i would do if i had the time & the talent!!

I don't think these are available online, Maor just sent them out to a few of his friends, so they are out there somewhere, I'm surprised that they are not as available as the Victorialake edits, the way that things get traded between Cocteau fans.....now if someone had some soundboard gigs they wanted to trade, i'm sure i could find some copies!! :) ;-)

in fact, i share since a month regularly on Easytree (www.easytree.org) some of my best private bootlegs. bains douches '83, black sessions'94+'95 (different source) and last week detroit '90 soundboard. and other guys have posted the TV DVDS vol.1 & 2 + Toronto live '94 DVD. that could be a solution because it's easier/quickier than soulseek. and it's free.
It's free until the RIAA & BPI start suing!
Must confess I've never used any of these file sharing sites for various reasons (security, spyware, copyright issues etc etc). If we put them on there doesn't that make them available to the world and his wife, or can access be restricted to specific people.
If Watchlar wants to post it, my ftp could handle maybe 50-100 downloads of the full album per month depending on the file size.
If bandwidth got to high, I would have to pull it before the end of the month though.

When I heard about it in this thread I suspected I might like this album, and now, having actually heard it (thanks PJK), I must say i really love it. Some tracks work better than others (I'm not too wild about the version of Oomingmak dprid mentioned) but the longer edits of Lazy Calm, Feet-like Fins and The Thinner The Air work really well and actually enhance the experience of the original songs. It's worth seeking out for these two alone.

I LOVE Victorialand and some tracks on Victorialake only extend that pleasure, especially Lazy Calm and The Thinner the Air. But I do play the original album regularly because some of the re-edits don't work for me (IE Fluffy Tufts, Oomingmak) and the sound quality of the remaster is better.

Done by the same person, or two different editors?
WHY?
by anonymous editor found on SLSK,
sounds like dance remixes.

I made a few up for friends making new artwork based on the original Victorialand sleeve (as is the original Victorialake), i think i have a few knocking around and im positive I sent Phil a copy. If I can find at least one other one I'll send someone it if you want.
