...a very pretty thing, thanks for sharing that. i had no idea it even existed untill i "heard it here first."
was it part of the commercial deal you think?
or did it come later, because somebody thought it was a good idea,.........you know how p.r. people can be,....takes 'em a while to catch on.was it widely available? or must one have lived in either eu. or the east?

Very beautiful indeed!
Honda likes releasing promo CDs for their ads and corresponding jingles.
Normally they include different versions of the
song used in the jingle-like European dance queen Anastacia- or complement it with other songs- Freddie Mercury in Japan . . .
Curiously enough , the website of Honda Italy
has a sounds page whose only inhabitant is ...
Carolyn 's Fingers !!!

Beautiful?? I don't know. Something disturbing about seeing their work (or even just their name) in such a commercial/corporate context (and I'm not generally the kind of art-purist who objects to such things). I suppose the packaging is nice for a corporate piece, but the Honda logo behind their name is kinda ick. . . (Then again, I hated the yellow 45 insert-thingy from FCC. . .)

mmmender

colin, i see your point. but to me the honda logo represents the same corporate sentiment as say the capitol records logo or the fontana logo does. as anti-corporate as we'd like to think music is - it is often what allows a (fairly) unknown band to stay financially afloat. i at least respect and applaud companies like honda and fruitopia for having the good taste to use such a brilliant band as their spokes persons.....which is more than i can say for pepsi!

Too true, Leesa. Too bad the ad campaign was not more recent, as those Mitsubishi ads seem to have brought some music to light that might never have been heard. (Helped Dirty Vegas, wasn't it??) AS you know lots of bands that can't get radio are actively seeking ad placement. Do you know if CT experienced a bump in Italian sales following the campaign?? (Was it just in italy?)

I try to stay independent with my own art, but when deep pockets want to tap my work for reprint, that certainly helps pay the rent (and debts). I'm glad CT got to tap the corporate largess; I just don't know if the end product is visually lovely -- that's all I'm sayin'.

In any event, a true rarity for any collector! A bit of attention they deserve more of!!

Colin , there's another thread with ad info ,but
I have the impression that Carolyn's Fingers became one of the Cocteaus most known/popular songs in Italy thanks to the ad. I wish some Italian in the board confirmed this .
To me what is beautiful is the fact that Honda decided to use Twins music instead of the million other tunes that they were more likely to think about and that shows some sense.
Maybe even their robot Asimo listens to the Cocteaus !!!

listening for directions on his walkman, Asimo cannot decifer a single cocteau-word. "does not compute, does not compute," he complains while tumbling down the red carpeted steps. . . .

Brilliant and very interesting point, Maria Jose! I have noticed there are quite a few Italian CT fans <Alessio B. are you out there?> and that makes a lot of sense now.

I'm not a big robot fan but Asimo looks so bloody cute !
There are a few short movies of it on the net and it moves so funnily!
Back to the CD design,I think these people must have been aware of the kind of band the Cocteaus were.
Instead of opting for a clear logo , they went for its misty version.

.............giving the whole package a once over, it does seem to bespeak a certain (grudging perhaps?) respect. i, of course have no idea of the details of the deal, but i hope it was mutually benificial.....as a collector i find it very interesting. i still wonder how it came about, either before, after, or part of the advertising package...........as was said before, it definately shows supierior taste on honda's behalf! i hope it was part of the deal and not negotiated after.

i try to be, ever the optimist. not easy these days.
but i'm more likly to buy honda now!!;)

Highlighting the phrase "Honda Collection" suggests this is one of a series. Did they issue similar promos with other artists? anyone know who?

Maria Jose

On this same thread you'll find some info on that , with less appealing artists .

Leesa, since these all appear to be edit versions (based on the track timings), would you mind posting MP3's of the other three tracks for us? And if you're feeling *really* generous, maybe you could also post a better-quality Carolyn's Fingers MP3 (the one on the Honda site is only 64 kbps)? --Alan

alan, it's not really worth making mp3s of because there really is barely any difference to the versions, they are just slightly edited/shortened.

This response, coming from one of the biggest CT completists on the face of the planet?!! I can't believe it! ;-) Admittedly they're only about 6 seconds shorter, but *still* [stomping feet on hardwood floor]! --Alan

Don't make me beg here, Leesa! How about if I offer to upload something in exchange? For example I recently found a slightly longer Thinner the Air (massive mix) MP3 (3:19 vs. 3:09). --Alan

i'm serious alan, you aren't missing anything, just very slightly shortened versions of the exact same songs you've heard a million times - hardly worth the effort of turning them into mp3s and then spending 40mins a piece uploading them (i use dialup!) to my server.

why? because i have a free dial-up account and that's the only reason.

i use a 56K modem and i don't understand the second half of your question.

Leesa, sorry I've been so persistent about the Honda edits. I'm just a junky for alt. versions, tho I know these are only slightly shorter.

Didn't realize it would take so long to upload the MP3's. I too am on a 56.6 conxion, but hoping to switch to DSL very soon. I think Erinn was asking if you use a 56.6 conxion for uploading to the server, but a different (e.g. hi-speed) conxion for surfing the web, etc. --Alan

i love honda, just because...same reason i love cocteau twins...it just feels right. :) these days you could debate the merits of anything. is bush the anti-christ? was clinton the anti-christ? is hillary the anti-christ? i dunno...i just want her to be the first female american president. lol. all the marketing and politics aside though...i am happy to see any cocteau twins music perpetuated, period. now they just need to come out with some cool ads in the vein of the VW/hooverphonic stuff...

fyi, i just noticed that there is a misprint on this honda cd....it lists the names of the band members as follows:

E. Fraser
R. Guthrie
and....
R. Simon

the error appears on both the cd and the sleeve

Is your free conxion one that's available to anyone, or have you got a special deal? I ask because I was recently looking for a free ISP, but found that they all seem to have very severe restrictions now. --Alan

Maria Jose

There are companies in Europe that will find the ads for you and record them.
I read it somewhere while I was digging the net for gold on the Honda commercial .
I remember it being pricey !

While we're at it, does anyone have a copy of the Jpn Mitsubishi commercial that used Athol-Brose? Have you seen the commercial on TV, MJ? --Alan

Maria Jose
May-16-03, 3:15 PM
I haven't , even worse as Leesa knows I even threw away Athol Brose Obi when I bought it !!!! A sinner forever !
I'm sure someone in the Japanese Cocteua list has it .
Do you want me to ask ?

zed
May-25-03, 11:38 AM
........i'm still sorta curious (duh.) about how it all worked out.
was it mutually benifical? were the fuitopia things, which i loved btw,....commercial or not, good for the group also?

now,..........where to find that disc............

Z.

mmmender
May-25-03, 11:53 AM
mutually beneficial? coca-cola (who own fruitopia) asks for a jingle, cocteau twins provide, money exchanges hands.

so to answer your questions....the fruitopia jingles were written/created specifically for the fruitopia television commercials

Wow, I had no idea you were on dialup, mmmender!! It seems like you travel around the sight much faster than a 56k would allow. I just got the DSL line back after having to use 56k for a little over a week. Girl, you NEED to hook up with someone who works for a broadband company!

....or just hook up with an all broad band! :D

I must've overlooked your reply, MJ. Yes, that would be great if you could ask someone on the Jpn CT list about the video of the Mitsubishi car commercial! I've been curious about it ever since I started hunting for the Athol-Brose CD about four years ago. Got the CD, but never found a tape of the TV ad. --Alan

i fondly remember the fruitopia commercials - i LOVED them when i saw them (it's strange that i even did, i hardly watch tv now and really didn't at all then) and thought the music was so fantastic - too bad i didn't figure out what it was until years later :P
