I was wondering , how true were the stories behind the Cocteaus / Liz recording a version of " Dark Side of the Moon" for a tribute Pink Floyd album ?
I've read this in various places . . .

ADAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You 're always there for the final word !
Cheers!
So , was it true that the original idea was to have the Cocs cover Dark Side of the Moon
with Liz singing , then dropping the vocals and then gone altogether ?

Only one band can play "Dark Side..." - and it ain't the Cocteaus.

Indeed , Phil !

There was the first edition on the BBC last night of the "Classic Album" series, where the artist of a classic release talks about how the album was made. They usually have the engineer and source tapes to hand to pull out relevant bits to show how they did odds and sods.

Last night was "Dark Side Of The Moon", partly due to the fact that this year marks the album's 30th anniversary - the programme was an hour and a half long and brilliant. I didn't know that the vocal on my favourite track, "Great Gig In The Sky" was improvised by Claire Torry. It was a first take, can you believe?

The cash register sounds at the start of "Money" were on a loop of tape which was about 20-30 feet long. It ran through a reel-to-reel machine and looped around a mike stand with was about 12 feet from the machine.

I bought "Dark Side" when it was released and know it backwards.

Great programme befitting a landmark album. I've had Floyd on all day today - "Meddle" at the moment - and it's been a joy.

Being an old fart has it's benefits.

I'm not a Floyd fan at all, but saw the documentary about Sid the last time I was in the Netherlands. Very interesting.

Of course it's 'Syd'... right?

I was afraid of this . . .Syd Barrett , my absolute hero !!!
I was so obsessed with him , I think I have any possible bootleg , an Italian biography , records , CDs , tapes . . .
Iwan ,you should listen to him and the early Pink Floyd records .
Absolute masterpieces!

And yes , Dark Side is a trademark record . Phil there's a website devoted to its anniversary .

I remember this! I was going crazy a few years back trying to find the cd, only to find out Liz wasn't on it. It's a Pink Floyd Tribute cd from Cleopatra Records.......Other Side of Pink: Pink Floyd Tribute

Question: What happened to the Pink Floyd tribute project?
The Cocteau Twins: The Pink Floyd was released without any vocals, by their choice.

Privately, it is my grandest musical ambition to one day have my own terrible Cleopatra tribute that I can sit in the dark and listen to. Alone.

I'm not sure that tribute thing is correct. I do recall an interview where the CT's joked that their new album at the time (HOLV, I think) was "their Dark Side of the Moon".

Incidentally for DSOTM fans, this month's Uncut features a retrospective on that album as the cover feature. Lot's of 'Roger and Dave not liking each other' type quotes.

Has anyone ever done that deal where you run Dark Side Of The Moon on the HiFi with Wizard Of Oz playing on the telly? I would surmise one needs hallucinogens to make this worth the bother...

But HOLV was released much before that Hotwire chat , right?

If you want a really cool Floyd/film tie in, then try this:

1) Play "2001: A Space Odyssey" up until the 'Infinity and Beyond' caption comes up (where Dave Bowman sets off toward the monolith in the pod).

2) Have "Echoes" from 'Meddle' on pause

3) As soon as the 'Infinity And Beyond' caption comes up, hit play on the CD player and mute the TV.

"Echoes" fits perfectly in time and mood. Rumour has it that Waters wrote it for the film (they did lots of film work that was never used), but that it had sat gathering dust after Kubrick rejected it.

Give this a go - I cannot now watch "2001" without this arrangement.

OK ,this is the link , for reference .
In it Liz also mentions the fact that she was disappointed with the end result of the collaboration with FSOL .

Phil, sounds like a rollicking good time. Thanks for the tip, mate! I'll give this a go.

Speaking of Floyd/Film, am I the only fan of "Live At Pompeii"? Man, that film is just bombastic, pretentious, and totally awesome!!!

My favorite scene is Gilmour sitting at the lunch counter... looking totally stoned... "Some people say our music is drug-oriented... (pregnant pause)... well... it's not!!!".

"Pompeii" is on my wish list, mate.

You gotta get a copy, it's worth it just for the scenes of Waters striking a giant gong, a silhouette in the afternoon sun.

Yeah, I am sure you're spot on with what you are saying MJ. Sorry. I just recall that remark I mentioned. I think it was Guthrie saying "we've made our DSOTM". But remember they used to dick around in interviews all the time.

Yeah, I love that one, some really interesting improvs...while the whole thing was somewhat rustic and lowbudget seeming...

I agree, Scott, some of the jams/improvs on some of the tunes are fantastic... some great performances all around.
