The awesome "Lumiere 2007", the new performance of ex Cocteau Twins' guitarist (9th of november 2007). A surrealistic atmosphere with visuals that recall to the 4AD record covers. Live in Italy for TIME ZONES Festival (www.timezones.it (http://www.timezones.it))

anyone explain what is Lumiere in some short words?

Basically........Robin made an abstract film that plays on screen while he performs live at the same time.

Here's the official description........

Lumière is a 40 minute long animated film created as a backdrop to a sublime collection of sensual and atmospheric, guitar only, instrumentals of truly hypnotic beauty performed live by Robin Guthrie…

As the founder member of the seminal Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie has created some of the most beautiful music of recent times and is widely regarded as a musical visionary. The distinctive sonic landscapes that have become his trademark are again on display throughout the Lumière performance and at time touches upon his, thus far, only instrumental album Imperial and his legions of admirers will find much that they recognise and love.

Yet what marks this performance out from his recorded work is the spaciousness of the music. Robin employs an astonishingly down-tempo pace throughout the performance to mesmerising effect. This is music to drift away to… music in which you can lose yourself…

The film itself has been made with the same craft and techniques which Robin has used in the sonic world for years, an interweaving and layering of images, creating distinct moods which are reflected my the music being played. The music is ‘improvised within the framework dictated by the visuals’ and used no fixed rhythm or ‘beats’ but more relies on layers of treated guitars and cyclic melodies.

Actually it's an abstract film that sometimes, if he's lucky and the gremlins don't strike, plays on screen while he performs live at the same time.

Well, I'm happy to say that the one and only time I saw Robin perform/screen Lumiere - everything worked just fine. Come to think of it, the only thing that didn't work that night were my photographs of the performance.......they turned out to be too dark! At least the pix I took backstage, at lunch with Robin & during his on-air radio performance all turned out just fine. I should re-visit that thread now, come to think of it.
