View Full Version : Name That Tone (question for RG or GS)
Since Robin and Gordon Sharp have graced CTorg very recently, I am curious about a particular sound used in "Help Me Lift You Up" by MACBETH and "Evangeline" by CT.
Its a very spacey sound effect, surely the bastard child of layers of delay, tape effect, echo, etc . . . or is it? Its at the end of the MACBETH track and all over the place on "Evangeline" sort of like a psychedelic soft climbing sound <OK so I'm no poet, sorry!>

look a little harder, you may find more....
hmm . . . I think I also hear a variation of it sprinkled throughout PUR . . . of course airfare to France is quite reasonable these days, perhaps I can find out in person? :)

Yes, I'm also curious about this sound. Any insight you could offer?
Actually, I'd be happy on ANY sonic insight that you could offer! Any at all! ;) I wish I could've been a fly on the wall during studio sessions. My own knowledge is limited, but I love to learn!

If you want the "Evangeline" sound and you own a copy of Cakewalk's Sonar package, then you can replicate the Guthrian cosmicity by applying the following effects:
In the "Tape Sim" section, choose the pre-set to "Medium saturation, 15 ips"
In the "FXDelay" section, choose the pre-set "Trails" setting
In the "FXReverb" section, choose the pre-set "Cathedral - Warm" setting.
Your guitar will need to have some good, natural sustain.
Play about with the dry/wet setting in the reverb and delay settings (not a lot) and you'll be growing a beard and moving to France in a heartbeat.....the same goes for the blokes.

No, I disagree - It's better to use Microsoft Shards of Ethereal Light v1.0...

Very easy to say if you own a copy, Mr G, but PC World reckon it's now obsolete and have recommended Microsoft's new "Cosmic Space Can't Put My Finger On It Loveliness V2.3". Apparently, they're offering Cakewalk's "Shoegazing Band In A Box!" (which is actually supplied in a real shoebox) for half-price if purchased with "CSPMFOIT" (limited to one per punter).
But they may have been taking the piss.

I'll be drinking a cubalibre (or two) at the bar of the Oveja Negra. You guys just pass by there, then we can head on down to the Barrio Gotico. And of course I'm *assuming* we'll be stopping in Figueres along the way! --Alan

Oh, yes. I'm using it as a trial bed for a project I'm about to start recording at a friend's studio. I also recorded one of my old songs for my wife and packaged it (thanks to Erinn) for her birthday.

The very idea: the definitive CT sound as a VST plug-in.

Actually, the Alesis QS synths have a pad sound called "TimeWave" that is somewhat Guthriesque in a "drowning e-bow" sort of way.
The E-mu Vintage Pro has a guitar patch that would sound at home on Dynamine/Echoes.

Slight off-topic shift:
Help out a poor 'merkin: what does it mean when a person from the UK says "taking the piss"?
In the US, this phrase can only mean one thing, and it's about urination.
Enlighten me.

Phil,
As it happens, I'm working on some geetar tracks (lap steel) and I'm going to try this out tomorrow. (the effects settings, not the moving to France part)
Thanks for the tip!

IF and when they get my DSL line working on a REGULAR BASIS again, I will look into finding the Sonar version for Mac, if it even exists. I am definitely curious to try this out.
On a slightly related topic, I found a microphone combination last night which yielded intersting results. :)

Lucibelle,
AFAIK, Sonar is Windows-only, and I don't expect it to be ported to Mac anytime soon.
For the Mac, the closest thing would probably be ProTools (?)
ProTools is generally regarded as THEE professional audio software on any platform, but I have Sonar and I love it more than most things in life. It is MIDI and audio recording sequencing and editing bliss. :D very high instant gratification factor!
