View Full Version : What others have said about Cocteau Twins
First off, sorry if this has been covered before. Did a quick search and I couldn't find anything. Anyway, after reading about Morrissey's bitchy comments (http://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/showthread.php5?t=6793) regarding the Twins, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread on what other bands/musicians/artists have said about the band.
Here are a couple I've seen, both very positive:
Deborah Harry (of Blondie) - Chose "Iceblink Luck" as a track on her iTunes celebrity playlist, saying "Gorgeous soaring vocals that carry you away layered over a rich atmospheric sound. A magnificent track."
"Panda Bear" of Animal Collective - Chose "Know Who You are at Every Age" as one of his five favorite songs (http://marchonelectricchildren.blogspot.com/2008/08/5-songs-with-animal-collective.html), saying "We (Animal Collective) heard this song maybe 5 times while we were in Athens, Georgia and I spent a little bit identifying who it was because I don't think I'd heard it before. I know the Treasure record well but not much else I should say. I really like her voice and the way she sings and all the trilly and warped things she does although not so much on this jam."
Who else?

supposedly Madonna is/was a CT fan. there's an interview with her supporting this fact somewhere.....but dammmmm if i know where.
lol.
Just recently there was a post/thread about how Antony has been singing Liz's praises and citing Twinlights as an inspiration for the new Antony and the Johnsons record.
Here it is. Originally posted by Riako:
antony mentions liz as an inspiration in this interview with the guardian
"Elizabeth Fraser is the secret mother of the whole thing," he says. "The last Cocteau Twins record in 1996 was an EP called Twinlights and its last words were 'I still care about this planet, I still feel connected to nature and to my dreams for myself, I have my friends, my family, I have myself, I still have me.' And when I heard that I cried so much and changed my whole approach. I thought, 'OK, that's the most revolutionary thing a person could do – to hope.' That's how culture works. There's a harbinger 10 years earlier, then a whole crop comes up 10 years later."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009...d-the-johnsons
Great quote from Antony, thanks for finding it. I can definitely hear the influence.
I always hear the Madonna thing, but I can't find any interviews where she said anything. Not a huge fan of her, but at least she has (had?) good taste.

Is that the kiddie song about a donkey? You know, everything about that screams "Cocteau Twins.":lmao:
Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian - Chose Victorialand as number two on his list (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,1241217,00.html) of top ten favorite albums:
"More seduction, the Cocteaus have gone up and up in my estimation since the time I actually listened to music. So much else has fallen behind. I like this LP so much that Victorialand has become one of my favourite words. Listening to this LP I waved goodbye to school, to work, to every day ambitions."
Makes me happy. I love me some B&S.

We all know "Siouxsie Sioux" thinks CT are CRAP!
I love that girl, but after reading her contempt for our
goddess, she would certainly get a sneer from me upon our meeting!
How dare she!
IMHO her latest solo effort "Manaray" was nothing great!
I'm sure when Liz's solo LP finally comes out, it will be much more
interesting that Ms. Sioux!!! Let's just hope Liz's doesn't take as long as
she did to release her first solo record! Over 20 years?

O, siouxsie? Please... she is the sucky one.
What specifically has Siouxsie said about CT/Liz? Love the Banshees and I've found usually CT fans are also Siouxsie fans, so it's weird that she'd be down on them. She does tend to have a big mouth like Morrissey, though.
Oh, another one:
Shirley Manson of Garbage is a huge CT fan as discussed in this (http://www.time.com/time/musicgoesglobal/europe/mmanson.html) interview. Here's the excerpt:
Q: I remember when I was in college in the mid-80's, two of the more exciting bands were Cocteau Twins and the Jesus & Mary Chain.
A: Absolutely. Two of my favorite all-time bands, ever. They're Scottish. Whenever I meet people, the hairs on the back of my neck bristle when people say "oh Scotland, that's Simple Minds and Big Country!" I say "NO, that's Orange Juice, that's Cocteau Twins, that's the Jesus & Mary Chain, that's Primal Scream!" I think there's a lot of great things that have come out of Scotland.
We all know "Siouxsie Sioux" thinks CT are CRAP!

is it true??? god, is really surprize for me... but I agree: how dare she????:ignore:
I  Siouxsie. I wonder if her feelings about CT come from the time when Garlands came out and they were continually likened to the Banshees. The comparison no doubt caused distress to both parties.

From an article written back in 1991...
Robert Plant went through a phase of raving about them in every interview he did. Liz doesn't tell me about the time she introduced herself to him, but Robin does. They had gone to see Echo & the Bunnymen. Liz, who was a little tipsy, spotted Robert Plant at the bar and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me," she said. "I read that you really like the Cocteau Twins."
"Yeah," the mousy-maned ex-sex god grunted. "I like them. Do you like them?"
Mortified, she muttered her assent and slunk away.

from her interviews, i always imagined Elizabeth would be more ballsy in this kind of situation.....you know, like say "fuck you" to him or something. obviously, she must have been REALLY awestruck in his presence.....most deservedly.

I was going to say something similar. This was pre-internet, mostly, and you really wouldn't expect that face to go with that voice. Not to say that 1991 Liz wasn't one of my favorite looks for her, because it was (I liked 1986's spiky alien look, too)...it's just that it's not something you'd expect.

Ms. Sioux said somthing along the lines of how pretentious Liz was with her vocals and how lame the music was. And yes, she didn't like the constant comparisons between the CT and the Banshees. Anyone else remember her talking about this?

as much as it urks me i have to agree those last two banshees albums are VERY patchy
as it has already been said i think siouxsie was probably reacting to stupid lazy music hacks than actually slagging off Ct
i myself have listened to early banshees & ct for years and i've never been able to hear the so called copying by either artist frankly its just lazy music hack bullshit as far as i can tell
on a slight side note i was gutted when i read the goth edition of nme the reviews for pretty much everything apart from treasure are aweful some even quite spiteful
i posted a few years ago on a cocteau twins forum an audio interview with Perry Farrell (porno for pyros, jane's addiction) raving about Cocteau Twins. they were named as one of his top 5 bands of all time.
i'm afraid i can't find that link again.

S&tB were pretty important in my early musical life (Hyaena is a masterpiece), but I'm not into the whole cult-of-personality thing. That is to say: I like Siouxsie's music, but she personally can so suck an exhaust pipe as far as I'm concerned.
Darling, the whole "Cher image" thing is so not working for you.
Agreed. I will forever love Siouxsie's music and try not to care what comes out of her mouth when she's not singing. Though I do have to give her a few points for once praising new wave ice queen Cristina and her bizarre Christmas song, "Things Fall Apart," in a TV interview.
And I have to give her some more credit for this supposed gem from a few years ago:
"Recently at a private party for Deborah Harry, Paris Hilton was busy blabbing away on her cell phone. Siouxsie became annoyed during the toasts and snapped, 'Turn off that fucking cell phone, you spoiled rotten little brat! This is not about you!'
Paris was noticeably embarrassed and hoofed it out of the place. On her way out Siouxsie threw one last dagger, 'Who invited that silly cow anyway?'

Kirk Hammett I guess:
from http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/Interviews/1996_load_perspectives.htm
Last year, Kirk Hammett showed up at the Lollapalooza '95 show in Mountain View, CA. He arrived backstage around the time Beck went on, and hung around for Pavement, Hole and Sonic Youth. So while the media at large was stunned when, earlier this year, Addicted To Noise first reported that it looked like Metallica would headline Lolla '96, it made perfect sense to me.
The group chose some of the bands that are performing with them this summer. Soundgarden [who in turn wanted the Ramones on the bill] was one choice.
Screaming Trees [managed by Q Prime, the management company that handle Metallica, was another]. More unexpected was outlaw country star Waylon Jennings [a favorite of Hetfield's] who will play a few dates, and the Cocteau Twins, who were there at the kick-off show in Kansas City on June 27.
Thanks for that Metallica info. I've seen quite a few metal musicians and metal fans say they are into the Twins, actually. Not sure what it is that draws them to it, but I think it's very interesting.

I have a Q mag from the early 90s where no other than Mr. Trevor Horn says he has like 4 or 5 copies of Heaven or Las Vegas scattered around his cars and houses. IIRC, he said that , in spite of working on music , he found CT to be great to "disconnect"- BTW, it was Seal himself who turned him on to them.
Trevor added that he could not seem to find any way to be their producer since their sound was so unique and he wouldn't be able to add anything to it.

Its 500 years since Henry VIII became king so they asked Rick to perform 6 Wives at Hampton Court (Henry's favourite palace) ... the tale of setting up the concert was amusing (when he told it) .. basically Wakeman asked for loads of things that he expected to be rejected & they weren't.... Wakeman's manager asked him if he expected to make loads of money from the concert ... when W said no they decided to go ahead .... now that IS OTT .... & I'd still much rather listen to a 2 minute punk single than THAT concert

Ryan Lum (Lovespiralsdownward): Projekt has been successful at marketing itself to goths. We're not gothic, nor are any of the bands that influence us. Whoever thinks that we or Slowdive or the Cocteau Twins are goth must have a funny idea of what goth is
Robert Smith: "Obviously, I would like to look at the American charts and see the Cocteau Twins at No. 1, Echo and the Bunnymen at No. 2, The Jesus and Mary Chain at No. 3, and The Cure straight in at No. 4. But it's not very likely to happen, and it doesn't worry me." -1987
Alison Shaw (The Cranes): "I never really caught on to Cocteau Twins till much later on. I really like their album "Heaven or Las Vegas." For some reason I didn't listen to them early on. I was probably afraid of comparisons to them early on, or I didn't want to be influenced by her, because she was such a strong sound. I didn't listen to them to later."
More Robert Smith:"Do you know what is strange? That I've had all the commercial success, while I always was a fan of great groups that remarkably never really broke through. I think My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins have some really catchy songs, but still they never had a hit and you never hear them on the radio. I think it's one big conspiracy - or how do you explain that so many bullshit groups have one hit after
the other and get one platinum cd after the other? A conspiracy of bad taste, that's what it is." -2000
