Blue Bell Knoll
dynamine

I would start from the Begining;)
"Garlands"
and follow the transformation from Caterpillar to Butterfly
:music:
Would echo exactly what Dynamine said. Learn where they came from and where they went to (and where they stopped for a few illegal substances along the way!) :)

If you're already at HOLV, though, you should buy both Blue Bell Knoll and Garlands.

In this order:
1. Blue Bell Knoll
2. Treasure
3. the box set
4. Sunburst and Snowblind
5. Victorialand
6. everything else...
I'm not a huge fan of Garlands myself...and I don't *love* anything they released after HOLV except "otherness".

Whaaa-a-a-aaat?!
Okay, okay, maybe I have a pro-Treasure bias because it was my first CT LP. For me tho, Treasure still has more magic in it than everything that came ofter HOLV all rolled together.
(waiting for flames from people who only like the stuff that came after HOLV  )

i like treasure....it has its' moments... ;)
it's just so hopelessly dated sounding...whereas, from blue bell knoll on...there's a timeless quality

 Treasure?? DATED??? (faints) .........................::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::
Am I the only one here that puts pre and post HOLV on the same plane?

I'd go with anything *but* Garlands next. BBK and M&K are safe bets. Maybe Victorialand if you're looking for a lighter, more ethereal sound.

Don't worry, Andy, those aren't true CT fans anyway ;-)

Well, dated, yes...hopeless? no way!
Seriously, yeah, the DX7 bells and cheesy drum machine do make for a very 80's sound, but let's put it this way:
The fact that Treasure was my first CT album, made me a lifelong fan. If my first exposure was ANYTHING after HOLV, I would now be saying "Cockatoo Who?"
Your mileage may vary...

My sediment exactly :D
IMO, recommending Garlands to an absolute CT newbie assumes that they are hooked hard enough to not be totally shocked or put-off by how extremely different (read: spooky and sparse) CT's really early stuff is. It's so different from HOLV, it may as well be a different band.
Working backward chronologically from HOLV is more likely to turn Nprinciple into a glassy-eyed fanatic like the rest of us (insert sinister laughter here)
Of course, if you're already a great big Goth, then Garlands may be right up your alley ;)

well i don't think that stating that Treasure sounds hopelessly dated today puts me in the category of not being a true CT fan...just an fyi ;)

Hang on there, Steve. I wasn't referring to your Treasure statement there. I (half-jokingly) meant that those who only like post-HoLV CT aren't true fans. I certainly assume that doesn't apply to you! I do see what you mean about Treasure, altho I still love several tracks from that album.

Well, Ian, I hope you realize I didn't mean "ethereal" in a derogatory way! Victorialand is one of my fave CT albums! Just tryin' to give NPrinciple some idea of what the other albums are like. At least I didn't say "new-agey" ;-) How would you describe it?
watchlar
Jun-2-03, 3:10 PM
yeah it's hard not using the word ethereal...since it does really fit sometimes...
my roommate in 95 borrowed my VICTORIALAND cd for a paper he was writing for one of his music courses...he let me read it later....he described Cocteau Twins as "alternative new age"...I ABOUT DIED

Gadzooks, of course not!
Being that you are a moderator here, you are arguably an immensely bigger fan than most of the rest of us.
I understood iceblink's comments to refer to the (hopelessly confused) people who ONLY like the post-HOLV stuff. (oh, the horror!)
p.s. Some of my favorite music sounds dated...maybe even hopelessly so. I'll spare you the details.
MODERATOR NOTE: OOPS sorry andylama...i was trying to edit my post and clicked on yours instead....I restored the original post...sorry...my first big moderator blunder ;)---watchlar

We ALL spend way too much time on the internet. And don't get into the habit of referring to yerself as "a nobody". It's bad for your soul. (only half-joking here). We may or may not be GEEKS, but nobody here is a nobody.
As for Leesa the uber-fan...ghod bless 'er! If it wasn't for her, probably none of us would know each other, ever.
This forum is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me (I'm practicing work evasion much of the time. ) I don't feel like anybody here really knows me yet, but I'm enjoying many of the regulars here. Sometimes the posts are just hysterical!
