...my guess is the BU forum is not specifically designed for CT discussions; i mean, one glance at their mostly indie-boyband roster says it all.
well, i guess i could go there and ask when the new Sneakster or Sing Sing albums are going to be released........NOT!
yeah, yeah......they still have madame Breut on the active account, thankfully.
okay.....i'll get off my high horse "Bella Union needs an A&R make-over" now.
really, i do wish the label much future success.

fred, i COMPLETELY agree with you. there is so much talent on that label and not enough people listening to it!

nice color though. and yes, B.U. have some astonishing acts.
they really do need a better pr person.
they should hire back(?) my current editors asst. she was
L.T.E.'S former pr person. a real live wire she is.

true enough!
....now if i was working on the BU A&R team, you know i'd already be on the phone and in negotiations to bring artists like Sidecar, On!Air!Library!, Under Byen, Petracovich, Park Avenue Music, Kohann and (especially!) Donna Regina onto the roster.....
why?
because all of these artists have taken the plunge to follow in a similar musical tradition as the Cocteaus.
ie: experimental ethereal pop.
for that reason alone, these struggling new artists deserve to be part of a label that might best understand the origins of where their sound is coming from.
a sound and logical policy, methinks:
to bring aboard artists who will make sure that the creative heritage of Cocteau Twins will flourish, and not fade away into the current swamp-land of trad-indie mediocrity.

although....just to play devil's advocate for a moment :666: ..........bringing aboard new artists cost money and if you're not selling the output of the one's you've already signed......well, you do the math.

yup.....tiz the sad realilty.
y'know it's so weird that the ethereal pop market is so incredibly huge for someone like Enya, and then it just sorta peters out mostly when it comes to the more cutting edge stuff.
i don't blame Enya, though.
it just takes time for the ears of the "mass audience" to properly mature.
but it will happen.....or, is happening now, even as i write this.
the evolution of ethereal pop is only beginning to take hold thanks in large part to the daring experiments of the original Guthrie/Fraser/Raymonde connection.
it seems logical that, after a time, the world would be seeking to extent pop beyond the likes of the prevailing hard rock and heavy metal.
post-rock/indie rock paved the way......but still the ties to the past showed.
the electronic/laptop revolution is bringing a whole new slant to the possibilities for a new kind of pop music that subverts all of old staid and rather stale traditions of so many guitars and store-bought drumkits.
this alone gives makes me optimistic for the future.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this on ct.org (that I know of), but I just discovered that Robin's got a forum going on the bellaunion.com site!
I noticed several of our regulars have posted there, so obviously some of us already know about it! Why not spread the word so more fans can join in?

Someone started a thread in here on Monday about it.
OK, so can you cover your left eye with your right hand and read from the chart, please?
I think I'll stay put. Virtual Schizophrenia is already setting in.
No it isn't!
It bloody IS!

Is too. Anyhow, shut it. I can't hear the other voices

Was this posted by Markus *Pedersen*, who used to post on the old CT Disc. List?! I recall he was also into guitar and working out CT tabs, etc. Hello Markus, if this is you!
np: Liz Fraser - Underwater (Charlie May remix)
Okay, I have waited too long to ask this question. Please if you want to laugh do it where I can't hear you(oh yeah, I can't hear you anyway). What does that "np" mean at the end of the posts? I've racked my brain to no avail. Please soothe my sleeplessness at night by answering this.
Hey, thanks!
Of course! That would justify the song titles and band names after it...I was getting there. Blame the "I have a small child and am still get over the pregnancy brain" excuse. Hey, I don't care if it's almost been 3 years!!!

And sometimes you'll also see "cs", which I've always assumed means "currently spinning". I prefer to use "np" nowadays cuz it applies to MP3's as well as "spinning" media. Hard to say the MP3 is spinning, unless you count the hard drive it's recorded onto?!
np (not cs): Donna Regina - Out of and back into (Wechsel Garland mix)

hi fred.i actually tried to sign Donna Regina about 5 years ago. liked them alot, but it never happened. i think fred u should start yr own label cos u will be happy that way. . .we just think very differently...you have good taste i reckon but it just isn't the same as mine at all. not close. most of the new bands you like seem to make one or two records then disappear which is not what we are about...bedroom musicians are good, but only few like kieran hebden/prefuse 73 actually manage to keep it up and serve it up live-wise...i hate tired old rock formats too but i am still into bands who use instruments in a different way....
i can recommend starting a label, it's fun.

hi Simon....
as always, thanks for commenting.
geez, too bad you couldn't have grabbed up Donna Regina; just last year a spent a fairly nice sum of $ hunting down their complete back catalog.....and, really, i'd have preferred to send my money to you guys (if only because we talk here and i like y'all.)
i've toyed with the idea of starting a label, Simon, yes...but it does require wearing the hat of a business man, which might not be as much fun as my current pleasures of "listen & research & report" mode; i think i'd be a better producer than label boss.
really, there's such a glut of new music right now......and someone has to weed through it all and put a face on it; so might as well be me.
:)
yeah, we do have divergent tastes (which is often the case with my other dedicated musician friends who end up "married" to their trad-rock instruments of choice, ie guitars and/or drumkits....where it's natural to want to hear mainly the music that relates to one's own personal reference points even knowing the dangers of mannerism via these self-imposed limitations.)
i don't deny the durability in rock & roll marketing of a coupla "cool lookin dudes" and some loud guitars and splashy drumkits. sure, that's probably where the profits are if one chooses to head up a label these days.....so i can see why BU has made some of its A&R decisions; someone has to pay the bills.....goes without saying.
there is no doubt that trad indie bands like Doves and Coldplay still eclipse any of the Morr label bands when it comes to record sales these days.
and yet i don't think that necessarily gives them any greater importance over the long haul.
for me, the Morr and Fatcat labels are at least willing to explore some new directions re: technologies, not unlike the Cocteaus in their heyday......why do some of these artists seem more connected (than Bella Union?) to a kind of next generation "Cocteau Twins" aesthetic that is working to lay down the groundwork for a new kind of electronic ethereal pop?
and, really, it's way too soon to guage the career longevity of many these artists, imo.
labels like Morr and Fatcat are simply way too young.
my talented Socal neighbor Dntel is beginning to find his own audience now, and most deservedly.
....that's just my take though.
heck, i still get plundered by many of fine indie band pals for kissing up to Bjork, who is presently nowhere near any kind of "undergound label" status.
and yet, it's easy to see that she's damn lucky to be somewhere that allows her to remain both cutting-edge and uncompromised in terms of her creativity.
hey, and it even sells okay....so go figure!
no, at this tender age, if i ever take some time off from my music "research" mode, it will be either for the pleasures of producing some new local talent or making some music of my own to add to the great heap.
the last thing i want to do right now is worry whether or not "so-and-so" is selling according to given expections.
which is why i hope you can eventually find a way back to writing (and, yes, singing) your own music again, Simon.
hey, even Andy Warhol knew (deep down) that his "business art" would someday reach its end point......and that, even so, the paintings themselves would live on.
and, as always, i am wishing you and the kind folks at Bella Union much success.
cheers.

hmm.. i don't think you quite got the gist of what i was saying, fred old chap, but never mind. i never was much good at articulating what was on my mind. i think i will leave the theories to you fine folks and just get on with finding music that excites ME. as for finding bands who function to pay bills, you have no idea fred, no idea.
BU with the 'old marketing rock n roll cool dudes trick' huh? Right.
i exit stage left.
hehe The job that i woulld kill for... Production.
