Would make a lovely album Floatboat, but a bit too tilted towards the Twins more 'feminine' and blissed out repertoire, I think (of which you presumably most highly approve). To be authentic, any such compilation would have to be representative across the full scale of their work, surely. Off the top of me 'ead,

1. Grail Overfloweth
2. Wax and Wane
3. My Love Paramour
4. Musette and Drums
5. From the Flagstones
6. The Spangle Maker
7. Lorelei
8. Donimo
9. Sigh's Smell of Farewell
10. Those Eyes That Mouth
11. Lazy Calm
12. Throughout the Dark Months of April and May
13. Ella Megalast Burls Forever
14. Carolyn's Fingers

Er, can we make this a double album compilation?

God, how could I forget Pearly Dewdrops?

And the enitre Aikea Guinea EP.

Fuck it, it'll have to be a triple album, that's all.

Would be easier to say what one could safely leave off without too much heartache.

I've been in love with 'Little Spacey' for years as well.

cherry colored funk
tranquil eye
carolyn's finger
pur
bluebeard(acoustic)
primitive heart
mud and dark
icepulse
circling girl
half gifts
calfskin smack

and more...hard to choose... :headbutt:

I was watching the England training session, I mean friendly match last night and I thought......wouldn't Aikea Guinea make a great national anthem for somewhere. Maybe Guinea?

I need help!:D

who said it had to be authentic?
i think the point was to suggest a collection of personal favourite tracks.

I submit that a 'perfect' Cocteaus compilation implies some kind of completion or, at least, a gesture toward 'the definitive', m'lud, if it is to lay claim to said perfection.

Have the members (?mmmenders) of the Jury reached a verdict?

They have indeed, m'lud.

Buy a DVD-burner and copy the whole lot onto one DVD.

The defence rests and asks for clemency from the chair (that's the big, overstuffed one with all of the loose change and old bits of chocolate down the back).

oh how i wish i could type what i want to type...

failing that:
i think the original point of this thread was to list your favourite tracks for you own personal perfect compilation, which is, by its very nature, a purely objective thing.
so the notion of 'completion' is irrelevant (except maybe to the person choosing the tracks).

Other than saying Pur is my absolute favourite, I'd really struggle to put together a list because Cocteau music has many moods and different tracks appeal at different times. Heck, I still hear different things in them 20 years on depending on my mood. So to me it's a very subjective question, and there can be no right or wrong*, or even shades of right or wrong. It's so intensely personal that I'd doubt that any two people here will produce the same list.

* unless you include tracks from Victorialand of course - that's just plain wrong :D

 WHAT???? How can you NOT include tracks from Victorialand??? What's wrong with Victorialand??? Are your ears ok? Do you need a lobotomy?? :D Do you need extensive therapy???

tsk! tsk! What IS this world coming to? :(

So why not just speak your mind Mr Otherian; you'll feel better for it.

I was just making the fairly uncontroversial point that the 'perfect' Cocteaus comp. (or as near as dammit) ought to be representative of the full gamut of their genius.

The perfect Cocteaus compilation is relative. It means different things to different people.

well that's the point i was making.

as for speaking my mind simon, moderatorship prevents me from saying certain things, as all the mods and administrator are bound to maintain a certain level of decorum.

I just choked on my bacon sandwich.

Did you type that with a straight face? Or did you use the traditional finger method?

Gosh.....

I just thought it would be interesting (and fun) to hear what other peoples 'must haves' would be...! I wouldn't expect the suggestions to be identical - and, yes - it does depend a lot on your mood at the time....

 the first time I've had the courage to start a new thread and look what happens!! Perhaps I didn't phrase the question very well....??

Float

You phrased it perfectly. Passions run high in here about favourites/least liked/best of, etc.

Not so long ago, Ian threatened to jump off of a Wendy House because someone had the temerity to suggest that the cover to "Love's Easy Tears" didn't resemble his pet turbot, as he had believed for years.

It took four of us three days to talk him down, aided mainly by the false promise of a pair of Liz's soiled pants and a 'Buy One, Get One Free' voucher for "Salamanders 'R' Us".

So don't worry.

I'm glad I'm an "immoderator" then -ho ho!

Re relativism and all that, I say: killing a liberal a day keeps democracy at bay!

phil, all i meant by that is.. the mods aren't supposed to get into fights with people etc. - after all we're supposed to help keep the peace, not disturb it.
and by decorum i didn't mean not swearing and talking about sex, if that's what you were wondering.

and luci, don't sound so disappointed, you're supposed to know all this! :D

It's always been my experience, anyhow.
