View Full Version : Special Bits
We all love Cocteau Twins music, but there are often little bits of songs that are especially special, making your ears extra happy or causing the hairs on your neck stand up. Which bits of Cocteau songs stand out for you as being especially perfect?
I give you I Wear Your Ring, from 2:30 onwards. Liz comes back after an instrumental break that has slowly built up to the key change, there are several Liz's singing and it just seems so right.
Off you go, listen to it, then come back and tell me a) you agree with me and b) which bits of songs do it for you.

a) Yep. I can't disagree with that.
b)
i)Those Eyes, That Mouth from wher she starts with "Angels, now we are angels..."
ii)Serpentskirt (apologies to mmm) from 2.22 (when the melody changes) 'til about 3:10. Don't know why, just love it.
iii) THAT note in Frou-Frou Foxes... at 1:36

The yelps near the end of Melonella.

I love the clock ticking at the end of Peppertree :)

The guitar outro on Spooning Good Singing Gum, one of Robin's best, it just takes me to places undreamed of...
i have always been in awe of the section of I Wear Your Ring you are referring to. The seemless weaving of those different parts, along with the almost inhuman, spot-on harmony makes me wish there really was a choir of Lizes that could sing this over and over and over again. Perfection with no need for computer enhancement or correction.

"But I'm Not"
'nuff said.
'things from the forest die here, but i don't
dead forest things are offered here, but i'm not'
yeah, the end of I Wear Your Ring, the first time the chorus comes in Little Spacey, the fadeout on Those Eyes, the guitars on Sucking the Mender and Spangle Maker, the little scraping sound at 2.09 in Spangle Maker, bass in Smile, the crash ins on Ooze Out and Spangle Maker, harmony at 4.19 of Frou frou Foxes...
-The choir of angels that comes in after the first 'insistenza' in "She Will Destroy You".
-The second 'okey-pokey-dominokey' bit in "Donimo" where Liz harmonises with herself to heavenly effect.
-The bit after the third chorus in "Summerhead", you hear this little wordless falling melody and then Liz repeats that line "safe at last, seeing my thoughts in order" again harmonising with herself.
Ahhhh...
i think it's not just liz voice i fell in love with, but with her harmonies.
Pur is the best, full stop (or period in US speak). No need to pick out special bits - it's all special :)
