View Full Version : Way Back Machine - The Old 'Cocteau Twins.Com' Website

While looking for something on the Internet Archive 'WayBackMachine' site this week, it occurred to me to look up the OLD Cocteau Twins forum, circa 1996-1997. And lo and behold, I found it. This will probably only be of interest to a handful of old-timers here, but I found it rather fascinating to read postings of mine from 15 years ago:

Wow. Hector (my ex-fiance) is on there. He's the one that introduced me to CT. Strange to see his postings.

Cool, I wasn't on there then. However I got on it in 2000 when it had just started back up I think.

All the arguments about how RED was better than BLUE and BLUE was better than White still hold up.

I don't think so - I think it was just all that one board.

You might be thinking of the first incarnation of the actual CT forum, which came after that. Does anybody else remember that? :superconfused: I wonder what happened to it when this board replaced it in 2002? Did all the data just disappear?

Yes, thats where I posted alot. It was just a free-form discussion. I remember posting there alot. The fan forum wasn't really my thing. (you like CT, I like CT, lets talk about something else) :D

I did find the 'Guestbook' of the original Cocteau Twins.org site:

FYI
The original cocteautwins.com, as I understood it, was made by Jack Huynh, then Berkeley student and, to this day, man of extremely good taste. Time-frames in little difficult to pin down but I was able to, access the site, from London via my US Robotics 720kbs dial up modem', with Mosaic, long before it was sold to Microsoft to become IE, surely only a short while after the graphic tag was added to HTML. It was mainly hypertext but had some graphics for banners etc. Way ahead of it's time.
A screen shot can be seen in the first edition of .Net magazine, which, were I not a million miles from home, I would scan for y'all. Suffice to say I have it and may do so at some point. I can't remember any other bands having an online presence that early and kudos has to go to Jack for being somewhat pioneering in that field. Where would the world of music be now if there were so little interaction between artists and audience? I'm guessing I wouldn't be posting this .....

We're glad you did, Robin.

On a personal note: I'm sorry I couldn't attend any of your recent California shows. I planned on it, but other more paycheck-related issues took precendence. I hope they went well for you!

i know i posted in one or another of those early forums.....but i was always there more as an advocate of new and related music than just a CT fan. thus, my presence was more or less tolerated than ever taken seriously. i'm curious to go back in time and see these, Sean. thanks for the hot tip.

WOW--I'm so happy the Way Back Machine exists.

Jack did indeed start CocteauTwins.com--back in 1994. I discovered it shortly afterward and asked if I could help contribute to it, and I have done so ever since. I remember the day Robin first emailed Jack about the site. We were both bowled over, but thrilled since that was what Jack wanted all along (for the site to be "official").

The most feverish activity was 1995 - 1996 and the release of "Milk & Kisses." Ted Grudowski got very involved as well, particularly around artwork and visuals (he did some wonderful 360-degree Quicktime shots, if anyone remembers). Those were some good times.

In case anyone is wondering, I do have an updated CT website on my computer that I've been fiddling with. It's, shall we say, "more contemporary" than the one that's up now (which is vintage 1998).

If any defunct but celebrated band deserves to have a gorgeous website, it's Cocteau Twins. It's simply a matter of taking time away from other, much less-interesting freelance work.

Man, that was totally cool, Sean! I'm on there too. I remember that board.

Wonder if I can pull up all my old album reviews!!!!

Wow! Did I really always end my posts with the words 'kiss me out?' How obnoxious!

I used to know a girl named Maly. I think she might have been on the old board. Did anyone on here know her?

Me too Edward. I remember the day when I discovered this community and was so excited and actually a bit freaked out to find I wasn't alone. A strange feeling after 20 years of keeping it quiet because everytime I let anyone in about my passion they made me feel like a weirdo!

Wish I'd had the computer knowledge to be there nearer it's inception.
