kill them? no way.
it may not be the way i'd choose to orchestrate this particular song, but they're plainly sincere in this attempt and hugely passionate in the execution.
actually, i'm all for hearing as many different permutations as possible of the songs by our favorite band.....and yes, dare i say it, that includes even elevator muzak.

i agree, rRob.
the mix here is all mashed up and turns to mush.
very unfortunate.
i think the mic placement is a large part of the blame.

frightful recording
a proper recording would do it justice. this is a good faith try, not Kenny G crap.

Hmmm... interesting.
The intense chiming guitar rhythm is the heart of that song. Without it, the melody doesn't have anything to push against to take flight. I appreciate their taste in music, though.

I ain't buying the album though.

now, there's a seasoned and well reasoned critique!

i agree, Quis. at times, i had a tough time fleshing out any of the melody. i think the choice of instruments here automatically made this one nearly impossible.

it's just sad that (obviously) they wanted so badly for it to be good.
the motivation was earnest.

you now have my permission to execute without malice the head honchos at HLN who allowed for this:

It reminded me of another cover which has nothing to do with this but gives the same cringy feeling.

lol, wow, i wish i woulda thought of something this funny first lol. who ever did this is a comedian lol.
now as for the topic...
i think it is a heartfelt rendition and these musicians are obviously very talented, and gifted. Only problem i can see here, as has already been said, is the recording and sound quality. proper recording equipment would make it even better. i agree with you, fredofla (http://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/member.php?u=122), i love hearing any kind of cover of our favorite band as well, and yes, even elevator music lol(some elevator musicians RIP IT at music). the ONLY genre of music i maybe wouldn't really care hearing a CT song in is Country. and i'm not talking about Bluegrass, because i love blue grass(use ta play the banjo :D!, but i'm talkin about "pop country".
i'll apologize to any country fans in advance. CYA!

Funny, I've always regarded Bluebeard as a flat-out pop-country song.

I like bluegrass too, for the record.
EDIT: Holy living fuck! I just found out that Druha Trava (a nifty bluegrass band from the Czech Republic) played live in Goldfield (a tourist 'ghost town' not far from where I live) just two months ago. Damn, I really need to pay more attention to the local events newspapers. :(

you don't like that song in general? didn't expect that haha
but now that i think about it the guitar in bluebeard does have the country like "twang" to it lolololol

I never liked Bluebeard--mostly because of the lyrics.
Liz's late-era 'introspective healing' mode of writing makes me cringe a little. It's so personal, and ultimately makes the songs all about her, whereas almost the entire rest of their body of work allowed the listener to make each song all about the listener. She wasn't wrong for doing this, of course, but that was HER journey, not mine.
This is why I find their 'golden era' stuff so fucking magical--it wasn't about anything but the SOUND. Every listener has a different experience because there was no predefined context for the lyrics.
Some people love the 'therapy speak' stuff, which is fine, but to me, it signifies the turning point where CT effectively changed styles, to one I liked a lot less. In my mind, this is analogous to 'Dylan going electric' or 'Jane Siberry going country'. :tongueout: Not bad; just not for me.
That said, there's stuff on 4CC and M&K that I like, but it's very hit-and-miss.

was that when Liz 'sang' all freestyle (to put it politely)
she could sing CT lyrics pretty close to what they sounded like in the studio, it's out there to be seen, and some of us lucky ones have heard it for themselves() so why the wild and frankly disturbing warble that occasionally happened when singing live?
I reckon it was nerves, and she forgot what her words were
of course I could be wrong

i'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. i find it a little difficult to listen to that tonight show recording, not because i thought she was terrible or anything, but just because i feel her pain when it comes to being nervous and playing in front of a huge audience, being televised on tv and everything. it's pretty simple to me that she was just having a bad day that day. it is kinda mysterious, however, that sometimes when we see her on a video recording performing live, she recreates the sound of the studio recordings perfectly, and sometimes she does not and "freestyles" (lol).
in her defense, i'd attribute the majority of the ineptitude to those "panic attack" type feelings it seems she gets every now and then. :(
i just want to turn into oxygen and fly into her and take whatever ailment afflicts her, cast it out, and make it vanish.

I must add that I don't it was a bad thing or a cop-out to have sung in such a way, but I personally want to hear at least a 'near enough' version of a song, and if people were to hear that unique live style before hearing the 'normal' sound, it may well have put them off, and that would have been a TRADGEDY
I don't know, guys. She was pretty consistent on the 4CC tour. I think it was a stylistic choice, rather than nerves. Maybe not the best choice, but that whole era was about change for her. And dolphin noises. It happened, just accept it.

strange how the conversation always seems to return to the subject of Liz and her dolphin days.
obviously, she's well past it.
i haven't heard even a peep in years.
perhaps it was a vocalized allergic reaction to the decline of her relationship with Robin?
such is possible.

I agree, and also Fred's point, which may have to do with why she went in the direction.

I dont get the stylistic choice argument. To me it sounds like she deliberately sang for the full duration as godawful as she could. We can say 'oh theyre an art band'.. but when it's your time with millions watching, the public doesn't know art band, they dont know WHO you are, then the idea is to sound like the album (product) that you're involved with, not like some crazy person yelling at you on the bus.

or was this maybe the first real sign of Liz turning on her fans?
let's face it.....much as we all absolutely adore her, she has shown mainly nothing but contempt for us.

I've always thought of it as country too. I would actually be interested in hearing a folk-country or country noir CT cover.
I also love bluegrass! (I used to be in a bluegrass band, back in California.)

Really?! Cool! Where in CA, and what did you play? Or did you sing?
...and do you still?
It was in Berkeley. I was a singer. We weren't actually fast enough to be "real" bluegrass, so I guess we would really be considered folk. (Although we referred to ourselves as a bluegrass band.)
I do still sing, but now I'm in a children's music band (and a "grown-up music band, but that's still in the early stages). As a matter of fact, the children's group has a new CD out that will be available online by the end of January. Maybe I'll post a link to it when it's ready...
