Hi!
There is a very interesting old thread about CT influences but I think that this information has not been discussed here and could be useful to fans.

I am always surprised by the difficulty of finding bands before they appear that have some similarity

However a few months ago I discovered a 70’s German band with a fairly obvious similarity (from my point of view) to Cocteau Twins called POPOL VUH, specifically their Hossiana Mantra (1973) closely resembles to Victorialand. Đồng Yun, their singer has an incredibly vocal resemblance to Liz Fraser
A good example is the song "Segnung" which contains some melodies similar to songs such as Fluffy Tufts and Feet-Like Fins

Hi Miguel! Your English is fine. We're a very international group, and we all speak slightly different versions of English anyway!

Popul Vuh, eh? I've known about them for years, but I never would have made that connection, though I hadn't heard the album you mentioned. Listening to the YouTube clip, I can see what you mean! (just add cymbals!)

I have their 'best of' CD (Perlenklange), but I always think of it a droney filmscore music, and I don't remember ANY singing on it at all. Their stuff is pretty obscure and hard to find.

i have heard of Popul Vuh as well, but never really got into them. i know i have some tracks on a couple of ambient and old electronic music samplers, but they never grabbed me.

but i just read the Wiki for the record you mention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosianna_Mantra), and it says "Lyrics based on original texts by Martin Buber."

wow, really? i love Martin Buber. this is an amazing book:

If anyone's interested in this, I have an old interview with the group where Robin said that the faint ghostly voices right at the end of 'Grail Overfloweth' on 'Garlands' are a sample from Popul Vuh's 'Nosferatu' soundtrack.

can't think of any ghostly voices at the end of grail overfloweth- unless you count liz?

i think there would be plenty of interest if you could post a scan of the interview.

Me neither, but I did find this excellent fan vid. Mesmerizing.

There is a sort of droney thing that starts at about 4:17 that could be construed as ghostly voices.

May I perhaps propose that Grail Overfloweth is the celestial summit of all things Cocteau?
My all time favourite CT track.

I read some time ago something related in this Popol Vuh tribute site http://www.popolvuh.nl/tricoc

I think this support the idea of conexion between both bands
