sacrilege: (noun) a technical and not necessarily intrinsically outrageous violation (as improper reception of a sacrament ) of what is sacred because consecrated to cocteau twins.

"...if there was one thing I could change it would be that name...when we picked it, it was just the name of the band, and people started reading all these things into it." -Robin Guthrie

dare i ask this question?

hypothetical: if you could go back in time and pick any name for this band other than Cocteau Twins, what would you suggest?

ballerina

if you'd like more information on the true source of the name Cocteau Twins, check out this thread (http://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1170)

Any name I could think of seems inadequate……hmmmm…

Okay how ‘bout Barnacle Bill and the seagulls or White Lightnin’

See what I mean? LOL!

Or we could always go with Liz’s butterfly theme: Silver Spotted Skipper, or Sleepy Orange. I actually used Sleepy Orange for a hypothetical band’s CD cover. Not to good at the name thing I guess...

Cocteau Triplets?
Grangemouth Trio?
Jacques' Kids?
:dunno:

I think I'm in the same camp as Mel on this one. I can't think of them as anything other than the "Cocteau Twins", not even hypothetically.

I remember reading an interview of Robin a few years ago, back when he still hadn't come up with a name for Violet Indiana. The interviewer asked something about why it was taking so long, and Robin replied that he [paraphrasing] wanted to get it right this time, that he didn't want to have to endure another horrible name like he did for so many years with "Cocteau Twins"! Surprised me because I don't think I ever read anything about them hating the name while they were still together.

The Grangemouth Gobdroppers *

* 'Gob': vulgar Anglo-British term referring to oral cavity, hence 'gobdropper' = 'jaw dropper', i.e. totally astounding/amazing phenomenon.

Move over Ivo - I think it would have been a stormer!

A recent thread got me wondering...what would Cocteau Twins be if it had not been for a fateful hearing of a Simple Minds song? :dunno:

If you had to think of a name, and Cocteau Twins was not an option, what would it be?

If they'd started the band a couple of Simple Minds albums later, maybe it could have been 'Someone, Somewhere In Summertime'. Or 'Glittering Prize.'

How about RES? (Robin-Elizabeth-Simon)

Or 'A Vocalist, Bassist, and Many Effects Pedals'

Or 'Straight Outta Grangemouth'
