well, there are probably at least ooh one of you who thinks i am an 'imposter' ( i think that's the word you chaps use,) which is fine, cos even though i am not i feel like one....
i haven't much to say except since this morning, i have not moved in 6 hours from my desk, such are the rigours of running an independent record label.
if any of you are bereft of new music and i guess you must be if you're all still listening to the cocteau twins, then my wee label has some highly fine artists.

An unusual visitor to the Terrordome.
I was warned of your arrival...wassamatta, mate...can't you sleep?
Welcome to Castle Beales anyhow, Simon. The restaurant closes at ten and the front door's locked at eleven, so no turning up half-pissed with some floozy, OK? Oh, and no smoking in bed....no matter how much friction you generate.
I'll be watching.
And one more thing, Mr Raymonde....no answering the "my favourite CT song" type threads....you'll cause a riot and I'm not cleaning up the mess.
Have fun, frolics and other things starting with "f" (no, no, no, sit down, Leesa).
greetings simon,
it's a pleasure to ummm. have you here. seems like ages.
i'm pleased you recived the books and whatnot i sent you..hope you enjoyed them. seemed the least i could do...after all the sounds over the years.
new one coming ..if you like.. you're on the short list man.

Actually Mr R, as you're here, you can pick who you want to play yourself in the bio-pic of CT that exists only in my head at the moment. I had Richard E Grant down for you, but, if you think he's a bit foppish, feel free to choose someone else.

As for me, I love hearing new music, when it's worth listening to, that is. As far as still listening to Cocteau Twins, what can I say? Words can't describe. Lots of bands come and go but after, oh my God, sixteen years!?! (starts to feel old) I've never gotten tired of your music. Not to mention how strong of an influence the Cocteau's have had on my own music.
It is truly a pleasure!

in no particular order...
i) it's a good fellas tshirt i think, i DO still have it but that photo is about 9 million years old, i don't know where it comes from , you'd have to ask mmmender.
ii) demos? good grief, there may be a jimi hendrix or kurt cobain in there and i may miss out on finding it....there are about 75 cds that i have not listened to yet and have no idea when i will....but i DO find things that way.
iii)yuka honda/john zorn not heard it. sorry
iv) replicess. i was only kidding (well half...) it's just that I am SO into what i do now that I don't spend much time dwelling on my past, though of course we made some cool tunes here and there. Things I strongly suggest you search out....new Czars EP 'X would rather listen to Y than suffer a whole C of Z's' is just sublimely good. The forthcoming Devics single 'Red Morning' 7" vinyl only ltd edition with gorgeous sleeve is their best ever music, and the video, my lord. So gorgeous....
Watch out for new bands and remember you heard it here from me first....The Faraway Places, Laura Veirs, Jetscreamer, and some bands nothing to do with me (much) , Clearlake will have an album Cedars out next year that is genius, so moving, and hmm who else...? The Kills are grand, Andrew Bird is ridiculously talented, jeez he really is...oh that'll do...

speaking of music on bella... i managed to find a few bu releases at a local record shop a few months ago. I fully agree about the czars. great band.
I am currently and probably will forever raise lift to experience as my favorite bella band. Not only is it because they rule...and that i'm from dallas....but they have a sound that i don't think anyone else could touch on. The guitarist for my band recently had discussions with josh on delay pedals....and i think we've now got a few new sounds because of it.
that said i think you should all check out polyphonic spree. If you can scratch past the fact that tim was in (cringe) tripping daisy you will find an amazing band (and a great show to boot)

yes jana, they are unreal, and i can't wait for their new release!! i was lucky enough to see them live in buffalo a short while ago, they were remarkable!
i was about to say the same thing. i mean, he probably dislikes answering questions about robin and liz as much as he dislikes people speaking for him.
either way. as mentioned above it IS a cocteau board....and since simon is closer to the other 2 band members then anyone else on here, he's in a perfectly good position to answer such questions. (albiet a tiring one)
I'm sure most aspects of the twins are a bit tiring to someone who is just trying to bring other good music into the world.
yes lift are amazing. in dallas some people had a difficult time getting over the whole religious aspect of their music....but atleast it's not amy fucking grant i say. ha!
i still wonder how josh is holding up about his wife. He's a lot stronger than i would be....still touring and all.
tough like a bear that kid is.

i would like ed norton to play me, for no reason than i think he's sexy and i don't think i am. ( leesa be quiet!)
robin is now living in france and setting up a lovely studio in his home there. He has made a very gorgeous instrumental album that I am sure you will all hear very soon.
liz, i don't have much info on her musical goings-on i am afraid. in fact none. she is lovely though and on the occasions when we do get time for a chat, she seems very well.
what am i doing? crumbs i don't have time to tell all. i produce alot , sign a load of bands, sort out business for Bella Union, travel about spreading the word, take my dog out, watch my kids grow up too fast, and eat too much thai food.

Simon, you're quite a sport to answer all our questions. :D And thanks for answering my T-shirt riddle! I can't speak for anyone else, but it thrills me to hear first hand what any one of you are doing. We're all quite obsessed in here, really. We have a support group going on and everything. Your membership would be welcome, naturally, but I have no idea who to suggest as your sponsor. Boy, that's a tough one. Who could a Cocteau Twin actually turn to for Cocteau Twin withdrawal syndrome??? And of course, EVERYONE here is going to want YOU to be their sponsor! "Oh, Simon! I can't eat! I can't sleep! Sing me a lulliby, would you?" Yikes!
doug moon can be simon's sponsor. ba-da-ching!
Thanks for visiting Simon. I guess apart from being mad busy, it must be hard to to drop in to talk to so many obsessed CT fans, a bit alienating and as Jana said...I personally don't care for the whole fan/band idol-thing...but I am CT obsessed like many others here.
Things to bear in mind, that attract us listeners here are:
1) We are often hard pressed to find people around us with similar musical appreciation and finding so many online like this is a treat.
2) We are definitely finding new music through this place, or old music we missed(I know I did...), even if I don't like some suggested bands, I've heard loads of stuff I'd have never heard of. Some also because of BU. I love the Czars I've heard and Gwei-Lo was very cool. Rothko too ...need to check out more.
Ok, so I have one compliment anyway, in another thread Liz's phrasing in vocals was discussed...in the same sense(I think!) I love the the placement of notes in your CT bass lines...often simple but subtle timing. I later realized what a dramatic effect that can have and it has been a notable influence for me in how I think about playing bass or guitar.
Anyway, running a label sounds intense in that it seems to suck your time away...but I guess you focus on the new music and it see how worth while it is. Sounds like you get demos faster than you can listen almost...but it is cool you do and find things thru that effort.
I didn't want to add to the storm of questions, but wonder do you ever get time to play music(with different folks that come along) that won't be 'produced'? And if so, do you find playing in more varied scenarios without production pressure is a creatively stimulating area you perhaps didn't get as much of before, or does BU suck all playing(produced or not) time away? Hope it is well with you then. I hate to see the music industry have a bad effect on people, esp. when they have such a good effect on the industry, you certainly seem to have done so and continue to.
Thanks, Scott

firstly ms lees, sopranos hadn't been written when i was wearing that tshirt! secondly i DID buy a Badabing tshirt but it is hopelessly mis-shapen.
ok scott, well yes i would love to play more, but on many productions i do tend to play quite a bit, on Czars, James Yorkston, i did. As far as JUST playing, well yes I was a member of the band TRAM recently for a gorgeous show at the London venue Bush Hall. I played a lovely big grand piano, and some organ. The album Kind Of Closure, I played on, so it made sense that when they did a show, I did it too. It was hard work, all the rehearsals etc, with the string players and brass etc, but well worth it. Previous to that I played piano alot on the new Michael J Sheehy album for Beggars Banquet, ( he's recently been touring the US supporting Peter Murphy!!), so while I would be happy to have more 'music' on the go, it's fine for now. I am setting up a wee studio at home in next few weeks, so maybe i'll get round to making another record one day, but not like the last one! Urgh!
Phil you obviously didn't read my last post. Ed Norton, he's an actor, you know Primal Fear, Fight Club? Shatner? man I know I'm older than 'most' of you but Shatner? C'mon he could never look as good as me.

Replicess,
you asked about Will Heggie. After leaving the Cocteaus he formed a band called " LOWLIFE" who went on to record several albums on their own record label. I have a cd-r copy of one of the albums called SAN ANTORIUM. It
is certainly worth a listen and a fair number of Lowlife albums show up on eBay. The music is good but you will either love or HATE the vocalist. Probably hate as he is very monotone. I have got used to it and as I say Lowlife are worth a listen for sure if you can track any of the albums down. The basslines
on quite a few songs are clearly reminiscent of Garlands.

hmm, you are an inquisitive wee bunch arent ya?
re the day to day bella union stuff...well everyone here does different things, fiona looks after production of cd, manufacturing all that kind of crap, and she look after the money, cos i don't have a care about that much, and i trust her and i don't trust myself.
peter he looks after all the tours, pre-production, and other special projects. lourda she do all the mail-order internet kinda thing, lindsay she do all the international stuff, like liasing with licencees and distributors....(you're regretting asking me now!), and i do all the interesting things that i wouldn't let anyone else do!
by the sea, i do remember the olympia yeah, and the zenith, good memories...it's not like you say, i don't wanto forget the past at all, i just don't want to live in it....CT was a huge part of my life, and like all things, some of it was sublimely supreme and some of it was achingly awful. We had some excellent shows, recordings, little shared moments, and i have different faves, depending on my memory. My fave shows were 4 we did in London in a row, two at Brixton Academy and then 2 at the Town And Country Club. I guess we were pretty good. TV i mostly hated, though you're right, even though the show was appaling, (aah that presenter!!) the MTV thing was really nice. Jay Leno was shockingly bad! what a moron. anyway..what else? fave moment.....i think when we finished recording the track Blue Bell Knoll i was v excited...like fuck me, that was amazing! i don't ever want to go to sleep now....you know what i mean.

'Blame Someone Else' a tough experience, was it? I really enjoyed it, though there were two songs I was never really able to get into. Hope I'm not offending you with that. Considering how hard it is sometimes to find a CD where you actually LIKE MORE than two songs, I'd say that's a very good thing. I did find the lyrics to "In My Place" to be absolutely brilliant! I remember laughing my ass off when I heard that song, just imagining people who know you (think they know you) telling you what steps you should be taking in your life, while you stand there, half-listening, knowing this person just has NO IDEA what the hell they are talking about! I imagine it has to be really hard sometimes when so many people know who you are. I know that fame can really make some people crack, while others thrive in the spotlight. You never really know what it's like to lose your anonymnity (did I spell that right?) until you actually lose it! You know what they say... be careful what you wish for, right? As much as I aspire to make a living with my voice, my own experience has shown me just how insane that can be. Not to put a negative light on it, because it's the high points that we go after. The lows just let you know when you're 'high'. (put your pipes and bongs away. That's NOT what I mean!)
I love "The Seventh Day" too! Particularly for it's musical content. The music has always been more important to me than the lyrics (hey, now THERE'S a surprise!), but when the lyrics really 'speak', bonus! :) "If I Knew Myself" falls into that category. For me, anyway. (I try my best not to speak for others, or to use definate categories like 'all', 'always', 'never'. That sort of thing) Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. I think I put about five cents worth in!

a new solo record?
well if i ever realistically got close to finishing one, it would not be as song-y. I think it would be more interesting musically and it probably wouldn't have my whiny voice all over it! I can harmonise fine and do loads of multitracking that makes the voice sound nice but i don't want to do that anymore...i either do it with one voice or not at all, and i think not at all is better for me right now....i may use other people who can sing!

i thought Rival Schools was good and if i'd never heard Nirvana and Jane's Addiction I might think they were excellent.

With all the talent that is around you these days it might seem like a great idea to also use some of those Bella artists in a guest capacity. A collaborative modern version of This Mortal Coil, Bella Union-style. Just a thought. :)
Stratton....
.......and a VERY nice thought indeed!
i should think simon might answer that one.

i know i'm getting off the track again... but Simon... do you have any straight info on liz... was the Blanco y Negro story true... and the Underwater Single... there is no info here at all.
contrary to what you might belive simon, i wasn't 'under microscope closely monitoring' your musical selections or even moreso thinking "oh my god, simon is listening to something other than a bella union band!". Rather i was just finding it interesting because i believe my husband put this bands show on awhile back and i've personally yet to hear them (he did/does book, promote, pa, et cetera most diy punk bands who tour through london)
Anyway, i would have been just as interested if you had said you or anyone else were getting all mosh core in the office to some negative approach or earth crisis.

Cool thread! What can we do nowadays that will pique Simon's interest? I would like to hear more from him other than the recent remonstration about Tishbytes that both Leesa and Phil spurned.
