so you know my fave.. but it's a tough one cos pitch the baby is another big fave from this album. even though i think the Select 'Red Tape' version is better. anyone else (apart from you leesa) agree?

This is an insanely difficult question. I give a vote for 'I wear your ring', although I think ALL 10 tracks on HLV are brilliant.

I voted for "Frou-Frou" - for me, it sums the band up. The whole mood swings from deep melancholy to the heights of ecstacy and everywhere in between.
MMM............
i nominate the title.........aww,

A toss up between I wear your ring and Frou-frou for me. Frou-frou just wins though cause it gives me the biggest chills especially the bit where the drums and swirls kick in at about 1min49sec in

It's road river and rail by a long, long way. In fact, such a long way that you couldn't get there by any form of public transport.
FOTZEPOLITIC!!!
One of my favourite overall CT tracks. Such a sweet song with such a nasty title (fotze means "cunt" in German, I wonder if Liz was aware of this).

Way to go Symphony, thats my favourite aswell (at the moment).
I must say that this thread has made me listen to the entire album for the first time in years in stead of just the three or so songs that I really liked, and so right now the entire album's my favourite. Even the songs that sort of got on my nerves when HOLV was released, like I Wear Your Ring, Wolf In The Breast and Fifty Fifty Clown.
this is there most balanced and 'happy' album ever released.
Coming a bit late on this one, but I nominate "Road, river and rail"
Just something you guys might enjoy: as I was listening to this is real one player one of those windows popped up for Rhapsody and one of the little blurbs about CT said "Robin Guthrie once told MTV's Dave Kendall that amphetamines are his inspiration for making beautiful music."

Very difficult choice because for me there isn't really a stand-out track - it's a very consistent album. As I have to make a choice however I'll go for Pitch The Baby, but it could quite easily be different on another day - Cherry-Coloured Funk, Fifty-Fifty Clown & HoLV were very close.

HOLV is trascendental in every song and in every way, but I have to choose one: I wear your ring, specialy the live version... I always wondered how this kind of songs (main vocal and choir) would be sung live and I was nicely surprised the first time I listened to the live version with Liz singing parts of the choir and parts of the main vocal blended beautifuly, but hey! who can ignore the Fifty-Fifty Clown BBC version?!! nobody I think.
Road, River Rail. There a lot going on in that song but yet minimal. I have played that song over and over. The line "...so embarrased, I am not sure...." <sigh> that lines just makes me sad. I do think about my Mother and my three sisters when I hear it.
I think I might get crucified for this, but I don't like HOLV. When it was released, I was 20 ans had been listening to CT for 7 years. I had thought BBK had reached what I considered being the best accomplishment in pop. I enjoyed it a lot (especially BBK, the Itchy, Elle Megalasts). But that was it.
So when HOLV came out, I knew, right from a first look at the cover that something had changed. On the whole, the music seemed flat and devoid of soul. It was not pleasant to listen to, but it gave me the impression they had recorded this album as fast as possible in order to get rid of their 4AD record deal. Which they actually did soon after. At that moment, I thought my love affair with CT was over. And it's been. Until out of nostalgia (and hidden fidelity) I decided to listen to the new 1993 album 4CC. And there were moments (like the vocals Know who you are, summer blink, and pur) that gave me that pleasure I had lost with HOLV. To me MILK & KISSES was a strongest sign of recovery.
So, don't shoot me people, but to me, HOLV is monochromatic - it uses a very limited range of sounds. Some songs are really bad: Wolf-in the Breast and Foztpolitics , some acceptable: I wear your ring, road , rivers and rail. But the only outstanding track to me is 50 / 50 clown which invariably gives me the goose pimples.
On the opposite, I always skip Heaven or Las Vegas (the track) as I find it caricaturaly poppish, Liz' vocals are loud and without nuance and the rhythmic session is one of the worst possible in those years. Very Akward.
I might have lost friend by now. But I was just being honest. Sorry.

Honesty is revealing one's true feelings, thoughts, etc. when doing so would be of benefit to the audience. Otherwise it is merely guff.
I was just suggested to give my opinion.
I sometimes feel bad for not loving this album. Hard as I tried, I never managed. Should I have kept this secret?
There are worse and more annoying things in the world than just a quidam saying he doesn't like HOLV. A mere trifle before the great scheme of things.

Pass the nails.
I'm partial to Frou Frou..., but I love most of 'em.
I went for Cherry-coloured Funk, because its the track that Ive listened to, oh i dont know, over 1000 times or whatever, and i still hear new stuff in there, also the way the vocals are multi-tracked on there is so amazing and it still makes me cry if i listen to it loud on my own. Its the track that would be my desert island disc selection - the one you choose at the end as 'the' one track - its just the best thing ever, and i mean ever (for me).

The only tracks on that album that are remotely flawed are "Cherry Coloured Fund" and "Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires." Everything else is equal in its greatness. I guess "Fifty Fifty Clown" is ultimately my favorite. But it's hard to say.
Road, River and Rail closely followed by Frou-Frou.. and Heaven Or.. for me. But its all good!
