for those of you in the UK there will be a profile of Jeff Buckley (singer-songwriter, who drowned aged 30 in 1997) tracing his rise to cult idol status, with archive footage and contributions from Chrissie Hynde, Patti Smith, Jimmy Page and others. apparently there is an "interview with lover Liz Fraser from the Cocteau Twins" (according to the Guardian Guide)

old news? I had no idea Liz had a passionate relationship with Jeff Buckley in 97'. Coincidence or could this be by she broke up the band after he drowned? Liz looks very very old now. Did anyone catch the Jeff Buckley special with her appearance on it? BBC 4? Anyone? mmmmender did you know?....listening to cocs. I just thought of something...if i could be swallowed whole by the cocs music jsut get lost in this eternal moment, I would die happy.

While we're talking about JB...what are some of your favorites? I have Grace and enjoy parts of it. I have downloaded a few...Sky is a Landfill is great, I like the lyrics and the songwriting there...I downloaded this song 'Forget Her' too(a studio version), which I can't find in any of the commercial(posthumus) releases...I like it...haven't heard much else...still looking for an unknown track which had a guitar part I loved...can't recall the name...haven't downloaded it yet either..plus a friend played a song about 'going under the waves tonight' and a few other lines which he swore forshadowed his death...I still think it is not such a huge coincidence given the romantic-poet/lyrical style JB had...

Phil's cough syrup: Tasteless

Anyhow, I heard Buckley wrote a song with or about Elizabeth Fraser called 'All Flowers in Time'. I've never heard it, since it was an unreleased track... Anyone ever heard it?

I've often thought that if I was stranded on a desert island and could have only one piece of Cocteau Twins music with me, it would be "Song To The Siren"... something about the nautical theme, maybe?

OK, OK, while I strap on my flame-retardant suit, allow me to opine further. Yes, I'm aware it's technically This Mortal Coil, not the Twins, and yes, I know it's a Tim Buckley cover, but... this is one piece of music that can send shivers up my spine and make me nearly tear up every time I hear it... it is achingly beautiful!!!

So... how do you all rate "Song To The Siren", and what would be your one desert island Cocteau Twins song (if you were only allowed one)?

Phil Lawton
Jan-24-03, 10:11 AM
Matty

This was covered here a long time ago, but here goes anyhow:

TMC's "Song To The Siren" - pleasant, but too stark and cold...not as good as the Czars' version, light years ahead of Robert Plant's latest mauling of it.

Desert Island track - "Frou Frou Foxes"

mattadore
Jan-24-03, 10:18 AM
Yeah, I had a sneaking suspicion this topic has probably been done to death on the boards, so thanks for humoring me with a response. The song itself seems to have quite the mythology. I like the Tim Buckley original as well, but must say I'm not a huge fan of Tim's work (ducking projectiles). However, his son Jeff made one helluva LP in "Grace", in my humble opinion everyone should hear it once before they die.

I saw an ad once on the BBC site for a documentary they were running about Jeff Buckley, and they mentioned that in the documentary, Liz was going to "...discuss the nature of her relationship with Jeff...". Anyone in the UK ever happen to catch that program? I'm curious what the connection was...

Phil Lawton
Jan-24-03, 10:24 AM
Again, mate, this was done to death.

Apparently, Liz's contribution was minimal - didn't see it myself, but those who did were fairly lukewarm about it, as memory serves.

I do believe that the commonly held theory is that GTO and Buckley rubbed belly-buttons, but I shouldn't repeat gossip.

It wasn't very clear to me either. What are all the well-to-do lads with the hounds and the horses and the horns supposed to do now? Is it the case that the foxes are endangered, or is the squawk more about it being a cruel sport? Ah well, having never been to England, it's probably not my place to comment one way or the other...

Simple question deserves a simple answer :-

'Song To The Siren' by This Mortal Coil is the single greatest recording ever made by anybody, anywhere, anytime, and the CT track I'd take to a desert island would be Pur.

Easy. Ask me a hard one :D

crushed
Jan-24-03, 2:40 PM
Phil, you and I finally mesh on something perfectly (no, that's not an invitation to rub belly buttons...it wouldn't be an effective position anyhow). "Frou-frou foxes" is the closest CT ever came to having all their best qualities in a single song.

Fair play, and I suppose I should amend my statement. In this PC era we live in, space should be cleared at the table for innie+innie and outie+outie bellybutton rubbin' and so forth...

not that matty did in the first place!
(ok matty i'll let you off cos you did acknowledge the TMC/CT issue :) )

mind you i can see why a lot of people consider this to be cocteau twins. i mean, as far as i know there's not much (if anything) on that track apart from robin and liz. and it was only them who made up cocteau twins at the time, so...

oh well who cares really, include it as theirs or not, it's still a great track. :)

I was about to rush into a reply when sanity put the brakes on.

"Outie" can take so many meanings....let me take care and confirm that:

I am an "outie" in the sense that my genitalia is of the appendage type, as opposed to the orifice type.

I am not an "outie" in the sense that I need to "come out" at any point about anything.

I still don't think I covered all the bases, but I can't be bothered to get all picky.

No worries, sir. I was originally just trying to make a cheeky comment myself; after reading your "rubbing bellybuttons" turn of phrase, I had this funny visual of an outie bellybutton and an innie bellybutton snapping together like pieces of a puzzle, then realized after reading crushed's post that the whole innie/outie thing could also be used as a metaphor for genitalia, so I hastily added my addendum so as not to appear the homophobe.

Speaking of maulings of "Song To The Siren", there's a dreadful remake on Disc 2 of Paul Oakenfold's "Perfecto Presents Another World" 2 CD set entitled, "Song to the Siren (Did I Dream) (Fabel Mix)" by some no-account chancer named Lost Witness. Avoid this like the plague, the vox are quite crap IMHO and the music is generic trance drivel.

kubrick kicks my ass all over! 'cept i wasn't too keen on "legs wide open" as i like to call it.

mattadore
Jan-28-03, 4:25 PM
Indeed. For what was supposed to be such a "sexy" film, it is so cold and sterile. Creepy!!! Maybe that was the point. I have the Kubrick box set on DVD... a very worthwhile investment indeed. I'm a big fan of "Dr. Strangelove" me own self. ;)

I think I have to amend my original statement at the beginning of this thread... "Great Spangled Fritillary" is my new CT desert island track for today. When the chorus or whatever we should call it kicks in at 2:54, it gets me all sorts of blissed out.

Ideally, I would need a rotation sequence for desert island tracks where I could choose a new one every day, but I guess that would be cheating. Tom Hanks had no such luxury in that rather drab "Castaway" film, talking to the same volleyball day in and day out...

Jan-28-03, 4:41 PM
i hate to dis the original idea of this thread and hijack it with a conversation about kubrick BUT......he is (was) a genius. my youngest son's middle name is lyndon (from barry lyndon) cos i adroe that film!

mattadore
Jan-28-03, 4:45 PM
Hey, no problem, hijack away! As Phil very rightly pointed out, the original topic of the thread has been done to death on the boards already anyway. I agree wholeheartedly about Kubrick being a genius. And Lyndon is indeed a fine name, as a first or middle name. I have to admit I'm not super wild about "Full Metal Jacket" (or "Full Metal Jackoff" as I like to call it ;)), although the "This is my rifle, there are many like them but this one is mine..." stuff with the poor kid getting terrorized at boot camp during the beginning prologue sequence is intense!

"He was just really spontaneous and it was just exciting"

"I was having a hard time in the band I was in and so to meet Jeffrey was just like being given a set of paints. Do you know what I mean? It was just like I had all this color in my life again"

"I mean he idolized me before he met me. It's kind of creepy and I, I was like that with him. This is embarrassing but it's the truth. I just couldn't help falling in love with him. He was adorable"

"I read his diaries, he read mine, you know we'd just swap, we'd literally just hand over this very personal stuff and I've never done that with anybody else. I don't know if he has. So in some ways it was very, there was a great deal of intimacy but then there'd be times when I'd just think "oh no, I'm just not penetrating this Jeff Buckley boy at all" I just felt like a groupie or something sometimes. It wasn't like being his partner at all."

"He just had something you wanted, it didn't matter who you were"

i have seen it as this and i have also seen it as just 'flowers in time'. jeff performed this track live on one of his last tours. the actual version he recorded with liz is just guitar and voice. i haven't heard it but from what i understand liz wasn't happy with her performance. it was around the time of 4cc so that makes sense. it's possible we will never see this released for that reason.

Just yesterday I was reading an interview with Sing Sing and they were asked if they thought Liz would ever record that solo album.

This appeared in the mag Uncut some time ago . . .

"His mother, Mary Guibert, who compiled both of Buckley's posthumous releases, including the recent Mystery White Boy live album, is now planning a subscription-only series of previously unreleased recordings which could run to as many as 20 CDs. They will include unedited recordings of entire live concerts, Buckley's first demos and material he wrote with Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins."

"I've also got his first demos which include a song called 'Strawberry Street', about the casting couch in Hollywood, and there are also tapes of some songs he wrote with Liz Fraser. I'd like to see all of that come out. "

Can someone supply the link to 'Jeff on Liz' for the sake of balance? I believe he said something somewhere about never having slept with Liz cos she was just too sweet to have sex with, like a kind of soul-sister. (Which makes it hardly surprising if she didn't feel like his partner sometimes, given that she wasn't getting any.)

Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins remembers Jeff being introduced to them as Tim Buckley's son while they were touring in America in 1991. Having recorded an ineffably beautiful version of Tim's "Song For The Siren" (as This Mortal Coil) they were pleased to meet the young man, who was in turn awestruck by their music, especially the spectral voice of Elizabeth Fraser. Three years later it was their turn to see him perform. Simon and Liz went together to a small bar in Atlanta. "It was just Jeff and his little Fender guitar and amp. He sang for two hours and knocked me sideways. Liz and I spent some time with him over the next few days. He had tremendous energy and was completely into music. He carried this ghettoblaster everywhere to play his favourite CDs: mostly people with amazing voices, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Aretha Franklin, Dylan. And he could mimic them all. He could do Liz too. I loved him. He was an energising sort of person; if it was a choice between being infected by his zest or a night on a tour bus, well, you didn't want to go to bed."

Jeff's mother did indeed email me a while back...it was in response to my criticism of the people on the jeff buckley newsgroup (a rather miserable place to hang out i'm afraid)...these chaps were really dragging her name through the mud...that she was "hoarding jeff's unrealeased material" and only trying to release what she knew would make some money....

which was ludicrous...she replied to my comment thanking me for standing in her corner...in a sense...we exchanged a couple of messages shortly thereafter...indeed she has done everything she can over the past few years to get items released for the fans...and in honor of her son.

Regarding the unreleased items that have Liz vocals on them? well...she was also interested in these seeing the light of day...but since liz is still alive... i'm guessing the reason she was having so much difficulty with that is because Liz didn't want the track (s) released. And this is what his Mary alluded to in her emails. There is speculation about just how many tracks there are.

She is very active in organizations that assist musicians to get off the stuff...if you know what i mean...and learning to live a sober life.

Mary has done a wonderful job, in my opinion, preserving the memory of her son and his gifts....

Mary also answers questions on the JEFF BUCKLEY INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER in "Mary's Mailbag" that arrives via email on a monthly basis...you can also read the archives and subscribe to the newsletter at www.jeffbuckley.com The link is on the top left over the banner picture on the main page.

The only other releases available for Buckley are some EP's (Live at Sin-E cafe and 2 others possibly?)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into it. I have a few mp3's from the Sin-E I think. Also, I have two mp3 versions of the song 'Forget Her'...one sounds like a rough bootleg, the other(which is much better but still a tad muffled as if from an old cassette), sounds like a sound board or studio cut, it is 5:08 in length...trying to figure out where it is from...if I have the name right, I don't see it on any of the things listed on www.allmusic.com ...they did rate that Live at L'Olympia well, live set from Grace era I gather...so I was debating between that and Mystery White Boy...but if MWB is just audio from the DVD, I should get the DVD...

Ah, yes, well, y'see, Jana-doll....if you're British, you can get away with the tag "eccentric". There are lots of British "eccentrics" up and down the country, who are lightly patronised by the media, but generally revered for this peculiar British trait.

If Prince (or whatever he's calling himself this week) tries the same thing, he's classed as being a "weirdo".

TV is so mind-meltingly good over here that I watch about an hour of it a week.

Unless I get wind of an upcoming, decent documentary (one of my drivers told me about an hour "special" featuring an interview - and music by - Herbie Hancock the day after it was screened), then I'm afraid my only televisual entertainment consists of "Will & Grace" and "Scrubs", which follow each other in the schedules between 9 and 10 pm each Friday night.

So no, mate...you're missing nothing.

I watched the show last night (having missed it the first time around) and haven't been able to stop thinking about it all today. Liz's contribution stood out, for me, for how heartfelt it was, and how genuinely moved she clearly was in remembering Jeff. I kept thinking of Steve Sutherland's review of a Cocteaus show from the early 80s, something about there being 'no senseless emoting here', just sheer, concentrated feeling. Liz is so precious, just because she's so un-precious, which is a feebly reductive way of saying that, for her, her soul and her music are an interwoven whole.

I think that's why she 'fell in love' with Jeff, and his frightening, visionary, flying voice, and can't help wondering, however important Robin was to her for a long time and how happy I hope she is with Damon now, if he was not her 'true love', the tragic one that couldn't be lived.

If there is a heaven. Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley and Liz Fraser will definitely be singing in it (with Robin and Simon playing bass and guitar on neighbouring clouds).

American TV is so good that I slavishly watch about 2 hours per month. No, really! It's THAT good!

As for British TV, a friend exposed me to "Ali G", and I watched that, transfixed for about 2 hours straight. It was like watching a car accident in slow motion on endless loop.

Ali G 'crossed over' to US cable TV, but interestingly, his accent abruptly lost that West Indies inflection. Very few of us yanks would have understood it, and they knew it.

Well, if you've got HBO, there's Six Feet Under and Sopranos....

Any chance that one of you guys in the UK who taped the Buckley doc can make a dub for the rest of us? I know there's the usual PAL/NTSC issue to contend with (for those of us in N. Amer. & Japan, at least). But I'd be willing to get a transfer done and start a distribution "tree" if someone can send me a PAL copy.

I saw the programme too and thought it was very well done. Even my wife sat and watched it ( although that may be due in a large part to the fact that jeff was a good looking boy ). I was amazed and pleased to hear Jeff's version of Genesis's "Back In New York City" which sounded great.
I was really impressed with liz's interview clips. It was the first time I have ever seen footage of her speaking. I thought see came across as a very thoughtful , emotional , loving and sensitive soul. Not in the slightest bit cooky or nuts. Looked lovely too --- Liz where is that solo album ?

Not in the slightest bit cooky or nuts.

you misunderstood me dear...

I said that in the past i had always had the idea in my head that she was a bit nutty (seeing that the only time i'd heard her speak was on the interview disk from like 82 or something and she pretty much made zero sense to me on that) But on the Jeff Buckley interview she (as my husband stated as well) seemed very sweet and sincere.

I'm a fan obviously....doesn't mean i have to think that she's all peaches and cream 100% of the time simply because i like the music.

you are right, I did misunderstand what you were saying. I didn't mean any offence nor implying that you were being derogatory.
I just wanted to say that Liz came across as anything but cooky or nuts. I was just drawing on the phrase you used and was not in any way attacking what you said. I think that is the one fault of posting comments on a forum ; what we are trying to say is one thing - what we type is another.

Alan,
I'm with you on the idea of watching a whole programme interview with Liz. I could watch and listen to her all night. As a matter of interest, I once wrote to the BBC studios in Glasgow asking one of their producers to consider making a documentary on the Cocteau Twins. It seems a tragic and painful story of, apparently, a very spiritual love on her part for an almost painfully talented, driven and fragile 'puer aeternus' in Buckley. Liz has made it clear how she just fell for him completely, though he said somewhere, I think, that sleeping with her would have been like sleeping with a sister, so pure and good was she. Even at an ignorant distance, I find it upsetting to even think about.

I always wondered if Jeff was the addressee of 'Rilkean Heart', given what she said in the TV programme (in an interestingly phallic turn of phrase) about how she often thought she just wasn't 'penetrating' him. Did he bring out her 'masculine' side as well, I wonder?

i also found this quote online.....

"Morning Theft Knitting Factory, New York 4 February 1997
Widely thought to be about Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, this wistful, tender love song about "unexamined failure" inhabits the lower registers of Jeff's voice. Despairing ("gifts for boot heels to crush, promises deceived") and hopeful ("we come together making chance in the starlight"), the melody moves in slow circles around an almost Elizabethan structure, a kind of deranged minuet which finally settles into resolution and peace. This lovely solo performance, given to a small New York crowd just before Jeff moved to Memphis, is both wilder and warmer than the studio version included on Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk"

I've always thought "Morning Theft" was about Liz. The lyrics make it seem pretty obvious if you knew that he and Liz had a relationship at all--platonic or not.

I LOVE the song "All Flowers In Time" or "All Flowers In Time Bend Towards the Sun" or whatever it's actual title. The lyrics are great, too, and I'd donate a testicle to get that recording of him with Liz.

I have an MP3 of him performing the song live that I'm happy to share if anyone has a place where it can be made available for download.

All Flowers In Time
***************

my eyes are a baptism
oh, i am filth
and sing her into my face
oh, phantom elusive thing, oh

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one, but here is one

here is one

ahh yeah, yeah
one that can never be known
either all drunk with the world at her feet
or sober with no place to go

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one, but here is one

oh...
we could go and then we
we could travel around
fading farther from me
with your face in my window close
when will you weep for me sweet willow?

it's okay to be angry
but not to hurt me
your happiness, yes, yes, yes
darling, darling
oooh...

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one

all flowers in time bend towards the sun
i know you say that there's no-one for you
but here is one, here is one

True. BBC America is pretty limited in what they show. However, I'd say there could be a good chance that Trio picks it up at some point, although it may take a year or longer. :( Trio has some pretty unconventional programming thrown in there, and they also showcase many musical artists who, even though have made quite a name for themselves, are rarely, if ever, seen on regular TV stations or even other cable networks. Tori Amos and Bjork come to mind. You won't see them hardly anywhere because they don't have 'top 40' appeal, not to mention that they are not 18 year old hardbodies in bobby socks, singing about how they're going to sex you up.

Glad to see you are up and about mmmendy lou. The original thread is not very accurate. The info that I sent originally has changed, and the url is to a completely different Buckley tribute in Chicago (nice try though!)

The information above is current, and accurate. The links also go directly to Kim Garrison's site, the organizer of the event. I've been hanging with Kim quite a bit lately, seen her play twice recently, most recently was last Wednesday. She and the other people I've met so far related to the Tribute are all really exceptional musicians, beautiful hearts and voices. This is a completely non-commercial event, all proceeds go to charity. We all agree: Fame and fortune matter nothing. Music matters.

If you're close to SF and want a preview of the Buckley Tribute, go to Kim's concert on 10/21 at the same venue, a tribute to a friend named Greg who has just recently passed away. Kim and several other Buckley Tribute folks will be playing that night. I was most pleasantly surprised when I finally heard them several weeks ago. I realised when I heard them I need more practice myself! I like to be blown away like that...

Apparently there was a film (DV) made of last years event that is still being edited. I have another reporter from nadamucho.com that will be covering the event, and with any luck we can get some recordings from both last years festival and this one.

The show last year was about 6 hours long! About 20 performers, lasted from 7:30 pm to 1:30 am!

Probably a better $8 has rarely been spent.

Brief update: The show was truly awesome, one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I'm not just saying that 'cause I played it, 'cause I feel like I sucked, but a number of people thought otherwise. I played "Satisfied Mind" and I guess I feel I didn't suck too badly. My guitar sounded great but my vocals were mixed too low and I was nervous as hell. There were about 8 groups with vocalists that just simply transcended! Many very high voiced males that just rocked absolutely. Highlights were "Hallelujah", "Corpus Christi Carol", "Opened Once" (done by Carey Head, one of the best vocalists of the bunch, unbelieveble! Also, he stole this song from me, "Opened Once" was my first choice but I'm happy I got "Satisfied Mind" in the end.) Several people did reinterpretations. Sacha Sacket did a quiet piano interpetation of Eternal Life that I liked a lot, very different. A guy named Eric Oberthaler (EO) opened the show with a stunning version of "Lover, You Should've Come Over" (another song I picked before "Satisfied Mind" but it was already taken by EO). Kim did "Grace" and "Witches Rave". The show was about 4 hours long. Awesome awesome awesome show. There was a film made of both last year and this year, but this year's will probably be released first due to technical issues. I should have audio within a couple of weeks. I also will be writing a full review for nadamucho.com. Awesome, unbelievable show, totally packed, SRO. Most of us were in the audience singing along with every song. Kim and I were at the bar arm in arm singing Hallelujah together. Fucking rocks!

I'll keep this thread updated as well.

MORNING THEFT
Time takes care of the wound, so I can believe. You had so much to give, you thought I couldn't see. Gifts for boot heels to crush, promises deceived I had to send it away to bring us back again. Your eyes and body brighten silent waters, deep. Your precious daughter in the other room, asleep. A kiss "Goodnight" from every stranger that I meet. I had to send it away to bring us back again. Morning theft. Unpretender left ungraceful. True Self is what brought you here, to me. A place where we can accept this love. Friendship battered down by useless history, Unexamined failure. What am I still to you? Some thief who stole from you? Or, some fool drama queen whose chances were few? Love brings us to who we need, a place where we can save A heart that beats as both siphon and reservoir. You're a woman, I'm a calf. You're a window, I'm a knife. We come together making chance into starlight. Meet me tomorrow night, or any day you want. I have no right to wonder just how, or when. You know the meaning fits. There's no relief in this. I miss my beautiful friend. I have to send it away to bring her back again.

I'll chime in too, very nice thread Watchlar.

tym: yeah, he really only released 'Grace' I think. I only have that and 'Sketches(for my sweetheart the drunk)' which was put together after his death from material which would be his 2nd album. Don't know the whole story...anyhow, can't go wrong with those two purchases....as for the rest, no doubt others here more familiar with the rest(live stuff I think) can give additional suggestions.

I'll put "Grace" on my purchase list!

I have a recording of Jeff doing a reading of Poe's "Ulalume" from the "Closed on the Account of Rabies" compilation...He has a beautiful speaking voice, so I imagine his singing must be beautiful. Thanks for the suggestions!

JEFF BUCKLEY ’s debut album ’GRACE’ is to be re-issued with extra songs.

Released on August 22, the album will be released as a three-disc package with two CDs and a DVD. Disc one features an original album newly remastered by George Marino, while CD2 will feature 13 non-album rarities and collectors items, either recorded in preparation for the ‘Grace’ sessions, or immediately after when Jeff and his band began touring to support the album’s release.

Included on this disk is the often bootlegged song ’Forget Her’, which was set for inclusion on the original record, but taken off at the last minute to be replaced by ’So Real’.

The DVD will feature four video clips, archival studio recording footage, interviews and live performances.

Buckley, son of folk singer Tim Buckley, died in May 1997 when he drowned in the Wolf River Marina, a tributary of the Mississippi River, during a recording stint in Memphis.

from rollingstone.com

Seven years after the untimely death of singer Jeff Buckley comes the documentary Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley, which premiered in New York City Saturday.
Directed by first-time filmmakers Nyla Bialek Adams and Laurie Trombley, the film features interview and performance footage of Buckley, spanning his entire life and career -- from his legendary gigs at New York cafe Sin-e in the early Nineties to his final recording sessions before his drowning in 1997 at the age of thirty. Mary Guibert, Buckley's mother and manager of his estate, gave her blessing to the project.

"It's an emotional thing for me because he's so damn beautiful, and I miss him so much," she tells Rolling Stone of the film. "I love the moments [the directors] chose." Moments such as when Buckley is asked what his influences are. He simply responds, "Love, depression, anger, joy . . . and Zeppelin."

Amazing Grace took six years to make and was self-financed. For co-director Trombley, the filmmaking process was personal -- she knew Buckley when she was a college intern handling his fan relations. "He was a wonderful human being," she remembers, "and it was really important to me that we do something to carry on his legacy."

Trombley introduced Buckley's music to Adams, who then initiated the project. "Jeff's music blew me away," says Adams. "I cried the first time I heard Grace [the only album Buckley released in his lifetime] -- I asked Laurie if other people felt that way too. So that's how we got the idea of talking to people who were inspired by Jeff."

The film also includes reflections from artists like Audioslave singer Chris Cornell, Duncan Sheik and Sebastian Bach, whose Skid Row performed a headbanging version of Buckley's "Eternal Life" live. "If Jeff were to suddenly appear to see it, he might say it was his favorite part [of the film]," muses Guibert of the odd match.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Grace. The record was remastered and reissued in August as Grace: Legacy Edition, a two-disc set featuring eight previously unreleased studio and live recordings, as well as a DVD featuring a half-hour interview with Buckley. With this new edition and previous posthumous releases -- 1998's collection of demos and works in progress Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk) and 2000's live album Mystery White Boy -- Guibert admits that this may be all we'll see from the archives.

"What Jeff did in the studio has been gone through," she explains. "There was one more session that was made around the time of [1993's] Live at Sin-e sessions that has not been touched. In terms of major releases, we are at the end of that. There really isn't that much for us to go back to."

Of her son's enduring popularity since his death, Guibert offers this: "The heartfelt adoration of the fans buoys my spirits. It is the reason for all of the days and nights I've spent since Jeff's passing."

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT paid tribute to JEFF BUCKLEY on the closing night of his UK tour last night – and said his new album will be out in March 2005.

The singer ended a string of UK dates last night with a show at the London Shepherds Bush Empire (November 8), his second in the city on this tour following a Halloween show at the Barbican last month.

Wainwright was backed by a ten-piece band for a set that was composed mainly of songs from last year’s album ’Want One’.

Speaking from the stage, the signer said that the delayed follow-up, ’Want Two’, will be out in the UK in March next year.

The singer played two songs from the record, ’Gay Messiah’ and ’Memphis Skyline’, which was inspired by the life of Jeff Buckley.

And as a celebration of the end of the tour, Rufus dressed his band as witches during the encore.

The setlist ran:

‘L¹ Absence’
’14th Street’
’Harvester of Hearts’
’Movies of Myself’
’Natasha’
’Go or Go Ahead’
’Pretty Things’
’Matinee Idol’
’11:11’
’Vibrate’
’Memphis Skyline’
’Hallelujah’
’Gay Messiah’
’Want’
’Greek Song’
’I Don't Know What It Is’
’Dinner at Eight’
’Beautiful Child’
’Oh What a World’
’Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk’

Jeff Buckley 'biopic to be made'
A film is to be made of the life of the late singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The musician's mother Mary Guibert will produce the film after becoming afraid that a biopic would be made without her involvement, the report said.

The movie is to be written and directed by Brian Jun, whose Steel City showed at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Buckley released one album, Grace, to great acclaim before he drowned while swimming in 1997. He was 30.

Finding Neverland executive producer Michelle Sy will co-produce the film, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Guibert told the publication the "time was right to have a project where integrity could be built into the script and that we could wrangle it so that it didn't get co-opted or changed in getting to the screen".

There was a police inquiry. His friends told the police that they had all been drinking and taking drugs until the wee hours of the morning. They were visiting the various blues clubs in downtown Memphis. He fell in the river and drowned. His body washed up 100 miles downriver. If you have ever seen the Mississippi you will quickly understand that a sober person would drown in it very quickly. It is a big, rapid, muddy river. I doubt if anyone would voluntarily attempt to swim in it.
