ADMIN NOTE: JULY 19/04 - THREAD PULLED FROM ARCHIVES. ORIGINAL THREAD DATE: SEPT 23/02
go on and admit to the rest of the world which cocteau tracks on which albums you skip.....i do it all the time myself especially with these tracks.....
cherry coloured funk
serpentskirt
these two tracks to me just seem sooooo out of place and i hate both of them. ok, i know hate is a strong word but in cocteau perspective they just seem very decapitated from their respective albums as a whole. i also don't think that the last 3 tracks of milk & kisses should've been there.....know why? cos they're too damn good for the rest of that album!!!

i know, i know, i know.....i hear this all the time when i tell people that serpentskirt is one of my least favourite songs......i dunno why but it just bugs the arse off of me....so i have to skip the track.....just ask someotherian, he's been in the cocteaumobile (aka my car) with me many times and it's almost become a big joke with the two of us because he knows my 'skipper' tracks and will say things like "oh look out leesa, track 2 is about to begin, better skip that fucker!"
Skipped tracks:
glass candle grenades
cicely
persephone
the itchy glowbo blow
essence
Violane
half-gifts
rilkean heart
ups
eperdu
I don't skip any tracks on Victorialand, Pink Opaque, and Heaven or Las Vegas! Those three I consider masterpieces!

LOL! Prod the mmmender about it and look what happens...teehee...
ok...though I will say in both cases I think it is only the song writing that is weak perhaps, I find Liz's singing very moving in both of your skippers mmmender, esp. CCF...that's all...
ok..mine(in order)
Tishbite
Persephone
Mussette & Drums (depending on the volume)
Summerblink
Not as a point of disrespect.. I just don't care much to hear it...

Hmm....
The whole of "Garlands" (easy to skip that sucker...just don't put it in the player)
"Persephone"
Most of "FCC", apart from "Know Who You Are...", "Bluebeard" and "Summerhead" (and "Pur", depending on my mood)
"Half-Gifts" on M&K...Watchy, was it you on the .com boards that first used the evil clown reference when speaking about "Half Gifts"? I've never liked it and reading that made it a little clearer as to why.
"Purple Haze"
oh shiti hate to think of dilkeing a CT song enough to just skip it altogether....
but it's just gotta be evangeline.....
great song really...but it just makes my teeth grind...
gotta turn it off ..

this is true, but the thing about most of the cocteau stuff that leesa plays in her car is that cos the CDs are so badly scratched, they skip by themselves! :)
but at least it's through (very) repeated playing, which can only be a good thing, right?!
as for my own skippage... i really don't tend to skip tracks even if i don't like them as much, like half-gifts from m&k, or quisquose. certainly not in a 'here comes a track i don't like, i can't bear to hear it so i'll skip it' kinda way. maybe it's because i usually manage to find something i like in all the songs. aaahh... :)

My skippers would be:
Hitherto (an awful mess)
Strange fruit (scares the shit out of me)
Otterly(have to be in the mood)
Sugar Hiccup (too repetitive)
Fifty Fifty Clown(album version-sounds too dated for my liking)
Most of Garlands except Shallow then halo(or whatever its called)
Pur (yuk yuk yuk)
RunawayBay
Sep-24-02, 11:31 AM
...I agree with you, I skip:
-SERPENTSKIRT
...
-VIOLAINE
-SEEKERS WHO ARE LOVERS
it seems to me like these songs are the least CTstyle songs.

I love the vocals on 50-50 clown...same reason I like CCF. I am sometime like someotherian in that I won't skip any, it is only volume which makes me hurry to skip anything...I've even sat and listened to Summerblink many times...some songs have grown on me this way(Quisquose, Blood Bitch...)...Summerblink wasn't one of em.
Summerhead is truly killer in my book, but so much louder than the songs in proximity to it...sometimes it comes on pretty damn loud here....

I tend to agree with Phil about 'garlands.' I RARELY play that album or peppermint pig or lullibies. To me, that was "proto-era" cocteau twins. If I want to listen to that type of work, I'll put on early Siouxise or Pornography era cure. I always personally consider 'Head over Heals' to be the cocteaus real first album.

Thank you for clearing my fart-filled air! I was only thinking albums, not songs. I happen to like CCF. Bluebeard is really the only song I can think of that I'll actually skip. I like the lyrics, though. Sometimes I'll listen to it, but mostly I'll skip it. Hey, I skip a lot of my own music, for that matter!:D I'll listen to the archives of my stuff every now and then and there's some songs that I'll say to myself, "Cheese and rice! What the hell was I (on) THINKING when I wrote that?!?" I read once that the Cocteaus felt that way about 'Song to the Siren' (Sludge to the Siren). I don't quite get what they don't like, but I understand where they're coming from. I think all musicians go through that.

In fact, Twinlights is the only commercial CT release I don't own.

I think I'll revise my list (above) and take off "The Tinderbox (of a heart)." Since I think I "figured out" the lyrics after listening to it on the digital remaster, I really like it. In fact, Head Over Heels is my favorite remaster so far. I just got the remaster for Heaven or Las Vegas and, while it's still gorgeous as ever, the difference is not so significant, IMO, as with Head Over Heels.

Can't believe I didn't comment on this before. Anyway...
I don't think I skip any tracks as it would just feel too wierd not to listen to the album as a whole. Each album is a body of work presumably arranged and intended to be listened to in the sequence they're arranged, so that's what I d. I don't of course listen to Victorialand very offten, or The Moon & The Melodies as I personally find them a bit blah, but other wise I listen as nature (or the Gods & Godess) intended.

Quite an entertaining thread, I hadn't seen it before.
I am fascinated how we fans are capable of singling out tracks that to others are doubtless classics. I'd like to put a little more ear into this question but the opportunity to publicly vilify "Summer-blink" is one I must take. What an absolutely embarrassing track! It throws the whole 'discernible' era of liz's vocals into question for me. I listen to it and just shake my head...
and I think I sense some widespread agreement on the M&K version of 'Half-gifts'.
but you've got anything horrid to say about Cherry-Colored Funk(or Felicity Kendall), you can just about bloomin' well say it to me first!! ;o)

Hi Fred.
I doubt it, since Otherness isn't at all representative of any phase of CT's body of work, per se.
I more suspect that CT fans are divided into camps based on the intelligibility of the vocals.
I've actually seen someone on these boards post a comment to the effect of "does anyone actually care about anything that came before FCC?". I just about fainted--me of course being of the "I didn't love anything after FCC" camp.
...vocals or not, understood or not,........ with me, it's the whole song,......sound, structure, melody. ........99.9 percent of 'em are just great. it's just a few that tend to rub my ears the wrong way. it's just my taste.i can't stand, (most of the time) when moma was moth...lately i'm more receptive ....but a week ago i loathed it.
alot of folks 'round these parts seem to be bored to tears with carolyns fingers..i love it.......with me there seems to be four or five songs that just don't fade for me,.and then.... everything else. then one or two songs i can't quite get over,...for whatever reason. i'm content with it this way.

....hi to you, Andy.
i tend to think of 4CC as a something of a failed experiment within the larger CT catalog with Twinlights as a kind of culmination of this experiment with all things "literal."
imo, the band returned to fine form with Otherness and M&K. incidentally, it would seem that the song Violaine seems to have some of the most indecipherable lyrics ever.....i still have no idea what demi-language the Violaine lyrics have may be descended from. it has (in large quantities) everything i love about the CT style......especially the amazing density of the total sound via extreme multi-track layering.

Well yeah, there's that ;)
Don't get me wrong, I don't strongly DISlike any of the latter-day stuff, but for me, as the vocals (for the most part) became more and more intelligible (like shafts of light through the trees) the magic and mystery faded by and by. With understanding comes mundaneness.
It's OK though...for me, the 'golden ages' are roughly 1984 through 1990, and ALL that stuff still makes me sparkle inside.

i do love cherry coloured funk - currently my msn name, but more because its my fave CT title...there are lots of songs that i cant figure out why ppl love or hate but at the end of the day it doesnt really matter :) CT FOOKIN RULE! PERIOD!
I adore the slow, smokey grind of Cherry Coloured Funk. I think it makes a beautiful opener for HOLV.
As far as songs to skip, I usually skip Milk & Kisses entirely. I think its their weakest album melodically and definitely the most overblown production-wise.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
y dont more ppl slate VL???
Blimey, you people are a wet blanket, I love CT's cover of Winter Wonderland, it resonates a wistful, Rockwellian ambience that reminds me of the innocence I once knew.
Tinspur,
That pretty much sums up the same way I feel about Frosty.

People skip tracks? Jeez.
That said, there have been times when I've passed right over Multi-Foiled, Sugar Hiccup, Blood Bitch, and a few off FCC and M&K.
But when it comes to Victorialand, if I had to listen to a single album for a week straight, that would be it.

yeah but don't you ever bore of victorialand??
that being said, i can never bore of HOLV!
:D
I used to hate VL as well. But now it's one of the ones I listen to the most now. And yes M. I still can't see what you don't like about Cherry Coloured Funk. But I'll leave you alone about that. I tend to interrogate people too much as to why they don't like something LOL.

i could show you the scars i have from the constant 'cocteau-fan-beatings' if you're interested?
Nein Danke. It is something I'd hardly take pleasure in seeing. I wonder who they were *clenches fists*
Well, it would depend on where the scars arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........., well, anyhow, what makes the CT portfolio so special is the striking diversity therein which attracts a multitude of colorful people to this forum. I have introduced their music to many a friend and acquaintance alike, and the vast majority found at least one song that struck their fancy. Whether it was the raw power of Garlands, or the dreamy landscapes of Victorialand, or the mature sound of FCC and MAK, there is something for everyone in these magnificent opuses.

I don't think I could ever get bored with V'land. "Lazy Calm" was the first CT track I ever heard -- was borrowing the CD from a friend at work -- and their music clicked with me right away.
I have loving, caring, fulfilling relationships with all the albums, but some of the children are more favored than others! I can listen to Moon and the Melodies straight through several consecutive times also, and have frequently done so while writing at night. (That's a great CD for creativity.)
Oh, they all have their moments, and even my least favorite songs are sometimes my favorites. I've owned Treasure since 97 and only in the past four months have I really gotten Pandora.
The only problem I have with Lazy Calm is that it takes a million years for the damn song to start!

Yes! I can't think of any other band that has such a diverse collection of work. It's one of the things that makes CT's music so hard to define. It was always changing. Always something to fit whatever mood I'm in.
I love it!
Oh and I love Victorialand! Never get tired of it! However, I have a confession to make. The first CT album I ever heard was Treasure. The first CT album I ever owned was Pink Opaque, so when I first heard Victorialand I remember thinking, what the fuck is this crap....LOL! How times have changed. It actually took a couple years to get to number one on my list, mostly because I didn't listen to it that much.
How to Bring a Blush to the Snow is my personal fave of VL at the moment. But I think one of the best songs is The Thinnner the Air.

Thinner the Air is pretty grand. Too bad Massive Attack got their hands on it for a re-mix. Yeah, their version is kind of cool, but the austere original is Something Entirely Different.
And Lazy Calm has the perfect length! I love the opening
Ok, too many posts for one night. Newbie to the board -- but definitely not to CT -- who has lurked for a while, and is now going to bed.
Well, not yet. I'll listen to V'land first.

That's ok. When I first joined I never knew when to shut up roflmao. It was also due to the fact that before then I had only been into CT for 2 months and I didn't know what hit me! I think I went a bit insane for a while roflmao roflmao.
Pale...
if only orgasms were as long as the build up! haha

But no! Alas, it must be Oomingmak! Actually, I prefer the instrumental version, for some reason, the lyrics crowd the song. Honorable mention goes to Throughout the Dark Months of April and May , it reminds me of Sir Gawain riding across the heaths and glenn's of England on his way to meet the Green Knight (read the book/poem!!!!!!).
Victorialand is genius. It is simply not of this realm. Can't remember how many times I have drifted asleep to it. I find the chord changes are devastatingly gorgeous, particularly on the 2nd half of the album . . . and love the slow, hazy build-up of Lazy Calm

Actually, it's a bootleg mash-up, done by an anonymous fan, using the bass line from Massive's Protection. I quite like it myself, but then I'm a real junky for these things, as you'll see if you hang around here for awhile. ;-)

Pleasant dreams, Ghost. When you wake up, feel free to stumble on over to the For Phoebe Still a Baby forum and introduce yourself.

ADMIN NOTE: THREAD MERGE
Inspired by mmmender's revelation that there are 5 CT tracks that she doesn't like, what CT tracks make you want to reach for the skip/ffwd button on your stereo?
For me it's:
Rilkean Heart
Evangeline
I may think of more later...
CT? Do you mean Cyril Thomson? I would have to say:
My Buddy and Me
Flower Girl (You Make My Dreams Come True)
Summertime Strollin'
She Wore Denim
Yours For Keeps (Bobby's Song)
Milk&Kisses: from Half-Gifts through to Seekers
Blue Bell Knoll: track 4-10 (can't be bothered with titles)
I play these songs every now and then but usually when I put those albums on it's just the first three tracks on repeat.
sacrilege, innit.
