What would you say if you saw Liz from far way...happy as can be with Lilly and Damon. Just enjoying motherhood..would you ask her to give that up and return to us immediately? or somehow balance her life out? WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

I'd say "So where's the solo career you left the band for six years ago?" and point to what her ex-band mates had achieved in the same time.

i know i know horrible isn't it? although she is one of the three reason the twins were an amazing band, i'm just not that much of a fan of her on her own. I just can't put her on that pedistal you know?

I posted something quite similar to your opinion during one of my rambles on the .com board.

Now, I'm not saying this because young Simon posts here, but don't you think that it's no small co-incidence that the CT sound changed from the mainly post-punk feel to the (I don't usually use this word, but here it is anyway) ethereal groove just as he joined? From "In Our Angelhood" to "Millimilenary" in a single bound, followed by "Dewdrops" - seems proof positive to me that his influence was telling, to say the least.

Add to this the much-discussed Guthrie sound and production technique and it may go to explain why Messrs Raymonde and Guthrie have been so publicly active, while Liz hasn't.

Just a thought.

First thing I would do is look straight at her and say "run..."

then I would laugh it off. I would say how much appreicated every contribution she ever made. Ask her how her motherhood was going. Wish her a good day and walk away.

I mean she knows her own situation...why would I aggrevate it?

you know?

No, I don't know.

I've always wanted to know why she used the "solo career" excuse to get out of the band. Other than a few guest appearances, what has Liz done, really, other than procreate?

Her alleged desire to go solo sort of made the split more palatable for the fans...until it failed to materialise. If she wanted to sink into domestic bliss, why didn't she just say so at the time?

PROCREATE....LOL PHIL

i wouldn't say anything actually...I'd just do a one armed handstand and kick my legs out....uh no...

Whenever I encounter a 'celebrity', I usually say nothing, because doing so would a) make me sound like an ass and b) annoy them. I mean, they're just going about their business, and probably don't really need some geek pestering them.

If I saw Liz (which I never will...but lets imagine)...I'd probably think: "what the hell is she doing in Wal-Mart?'

Yeah, I think most of us are wondering where the hell the solo stuff is, and wondering if it's going to be more like 'Underwater'. It's a shame it hasn't come out, especially after hearing Simon talk about how promising her efforts in using sampling and technology were. I wonder if she bit off more than she could chew, though. Post-production is HARD! It is for me, anyway. I'd love to find someone to work with who has a real interest and love for it so I could concentrate more on my vocals. Simon said that she previously had little interest in the techie end of things. Maybe she found that she did not have enough interest to sustain her when it came down to it. Or, maybe she had every intention of doing the solo thing, but found that she enjoyed having the time to spend with her family after years and years of busy production and touring schedules. I guess Simon's the one, besides Liz, who could could really give us an answer there, although he may not really know, either.

I think if I saw her the only thing I'd really have to say to her is, "Thank you for all that you've done. You've been an inspiration to me." Oh, then I'd show her the tattoo. :D

Yep, that's pretty much my attitude too...celebrities don't really get bothered much in Ireland cos most people feel that way...oh, yeah plus the begrudgery bit :D ... ie, what's so special about YOU?! :p

you all have to remember something...liz has been through fucking hell and back and had to deal with the death of Jeff when she broke the band up...that's a lot....I would have so much respect for her for just surviving that....and then I would show her my tattoo of course...lol;)

Hmm...not that he's of the same genre of CT (far from it), but Roy Orbison lost his wife and two sons very early in his career and he kept going.

I'd like to say here that I am NOT a Roy Orbison fan.

Poor attempt, Spangers. 3/10

spanglemaker
Sep-24-02, 6:33 PM
phil not an attempt and thanks for the fine example of comparing Roy with Liz, lol. people deal with crisis different ways. Did Roy also get raped by his father? and brother in law? Did roy also have a codependant relationship that lasted 13 yrs with a drug addict and it was up to him to let it go? hardly.... not likely...I just have been there. I have suffered a crisis of that magnitude ( not rape)and that playing it off does not make it go away. she should take her time no matter how long it takes. Of course I am desparate to hear something new, but I would not rush her. Ultimately it will be up to her...and that is all we can do..justwait for her.

and I just realised that you did say that you were not comparing Liz with Roy as far as music...I understand that...;)

phil whever you get a chance listen to the 9 min interview that she had on national poets day. You'll see what I am talking about. she talks about it. Also on AP there was a lengthy interveiw about exactly what we are talking about now

I'd say 'hi' and thank her for her songs and wish her well. Kind of what I've done with every person like that I have met. I don't see them as any different to anyone else, I wouldn't be scared or in awe of them.
Unless of course she told me to 'piss off' as Robin did to me in a chip shop near Palladium once
Maybe she is happy as she is and doesn't want to do anymore music you know.

i can't remember who it was but some ct fan once told me they ran into liz in london and asked for an autograph and she replied
"i don't do autographs" hmmph!

He did.
Maybe he was hungry and a lil 15 year old bugging him for his autograph was the last thing he needed. He was with liz and his exact words were 'piss off sonny, dinnae be daft'.

I think it's nice that people want autographs. Shows they care about the music or whatever. At the book festival each year here peple are only too willing to sign things and stop and chat.

But if people don't do autographs, then that's their thing then :)

Just back a few........

There are many people who go through horrific childhoods, dodgy and destructive relationships, loss and grief. I respect them all and admire their courage in the face of almost overwhelming adversity. One of my friends has been through all of the above (and more, possibly, as I found out recently) and still carries on.

Your question, "what would you say if you saw Liz, man and sprog in Wal-Mart" (I'm paraphrasing here). It seems as if you want everyone, upon sight, to throw themselves at her feet, proclaiming their undying admiration for what she's been through or be tagged as an unfeeling bastard.

Not so.

I don't know Liz - from what I've read about her, she seems an OK sort. While not classically beautiful, she is one of those women who are wierdly attractive. She's Scottish and now lives in Bristol. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

My biggest familiarity with her is through the stuff I've bought, where she displays her enormous vocal talent. I also know that she left to follow a solo career that should have elevated her, with the aforesaid talent, to being one of the most recognised singers ever. But she chose not to.

So if I bumped into her as she was checking the fat content of fish fillets, that's (back to my much earlier reply "what happened to the solo career, then?) what I'd ask her. Those of us who have had shitty lives don't want or need to be reminded of it by total strangers.

As for respecting Liz, I respect anyone who lives their life by trying to be human, not hurting or killing someone else or intentionally ruining the lives of others. To say that one would have to respect her for what she'd been through...look outside, Spangers....the world is full of ordinary people who either have been through the mincer of life or continue to do so on a daily basis. The difference between them and people like the Golden Throated One is that they very rarely get to do what they love, whether that's being an airline pilot, a surgeon, just "normal" or the singer in a successful and much loved band.

I don't speak from the position of knowing any of the Twins or corresponding with them (as you obviously do) on a personal basis, so I can speak without my judgement being clouded. Yes, it sounds as if Liz has had some real crap in her life and I salute her for overcoming it. Yes, it's her choice only to come out of hiding to appear on the odd ttrack here and there, so far down in the mix that it could be Pee-Wee Herman and no-one would notice. And yes, if she chooses to spend the rest of her days sorting the kids out, then she's free to do so.

But ask yourself this...what if, just before it all kicked off, Robin or Simon or, indeed, Liz had thought "You know what? I'm gonna pack this music thing in and get a proper job making surgical slippers." What a loss to our collective consciousness that decision would have been. And what a loss it HAS been for Liz to keep what she obviously has in abundance bottled up since the CT split.

Liz is not a saint - she's a human like the rest of us with the same shitty existence and frailties that WE ALL endure. Liz, however, can, by the simple act of vibrating her vocal cords, make it seem just that little bit better, just that little bit more bearable.

If any or all of this has injured your sensibilities, Spangers, then I'll apologise now, but it's intentions are sincere.

Phil do not worry about it. It's just when it comes down to Liz...I defend her furiciously. and I understand everything that you have said. I talk with Robin. We NEVER talk about Liz, ever. There is just something there that is unsaid. It does not have to be said. I know that other people go through crap...I know it. But I identified with Liz because of all that she went through that is all. Obviously my over reaction here has shown me that I am not quite as strong when accepting that she is done singing. You know? So in the wierdest way I agree with you. I just don't want to come off as some ingrate trying to MAKE her come out of hiding and sing. Not that anyone could. and I am just waffling on.

I don't want anyone to throw themselves at her feet. What I do want is people not throwing themselves at her at all... I think what I was trying to say is "Leave her be, when she is ready she will come back to us." some one who knows her personally told me this a long time ago. And I respect that.

and apology accepted and reciprocated Phil....

I've long since given up any weak hope that Liz will record anything ever again. It'd be nice to see her appreciate the groundswell of expectation that exists among the ranks of her less cynical (than me) fans and say "Sorry, chaps...you've had the best....see ya."

It'd just round the whole thing off nicely, like a cigarette after sex....and maybe a doughnut....and waffles, perhaps....
