This is a conversation I had with my youngest lad, Alex, on Sunday. I'd just put Leesa's rather fab CT video VCD into the DVD player and it had started as Alex, who is eleven, wandered in.

Alex: "The Cocteaus, is it?"

Me: "Yeah..."

Alex: "Did many people listen to these in your day?"

Me: "'In your day'? Al, they only split up in '97, mate."

Alex: "Whatever...."

Me: "Yes, well, they were a minority appeal band, Al...most of the best music is. So, in my day, not many people listened to them. Then the steam engine was invented, America was discovered...."

He'd wandered off halfway through this.

How is it that the little bastards can make you feel old so effortlessly?

I think since they live in the moment, its hard for them to imagine being full of them- every time I hear a baby screaming at the restaurant, I feel like saying

'so you think life sucks- NOW?!?!?!!!!'

the selfish little beasts(of which i was one) care only for the promptings of the moment....they get uneasy with the unspoken prospect that THEYare gonna get older any minute now!! so they fake it.
you on the other hand...make yourself feel old. i know..i was there for years....
i look back, and can't believe that i felt that way...

i hear ya' phil.....i have the same problem with my 3 boys on an on-going basis. imagine me, cocteaufreak extrordinaire, who has kids who just don't get it!

aidan: "mama, is that those twins people again?....you look like that girl"

leesa: "me and fraser? i wish! and yes aidan it's the twins, wanna sit down and watch with me?"

aidan: "um...when you gonna be done with the tv?"

leesa: "aidan, you and your brothers were all brought into this world listening to cocteau twins, did you know that? and that big cabinet full of stuff in my room, it's all...."

aidan: (interrupting) "cocteau twins, yeah i know. you've only told me about a hundred times. can i play gamecube now?"

Phil, have you ever tried watching TOTP2? All the way through the kids are going - "is he dead now?" - "is she still alive?". Yeah, well, Five are DEAD, Hearsay are DEAD, Vengaboys are DEAD and Shaggy's dead if I get my bleedin' hands on him!! ;)
