View Full Version : FAVORITE CT SONGS (LIMIT TO 3)

There has been a thread running in connection with favorite CT albums, but how about individual songs? This might be more difficult, since all of their songs are so wonderful.

I shall have to think about this more meself before offering my suggestions. . .

That's a hellishly tricky poser. However, essentially such a list could change daily. For example at this moment I would list:

Orange Appled
In Our Angelhood
Bluebeard

However, ask me tomorrow and it would probably be a different list!

Ben:

I would have to agree with you about one's favorite songs changing with each day and through time. Right now, for instance, I am particularly partial to "Hitherto", "Cherry-Coloured Funk", and "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires", but I would hesitate to say those are CT's best songs. . .

I don't know why I find these threads so fun, knowing(as we all do) how futile it is to name such favorites...it is interesting to see what bubbles up in the process from others...at least shows some songs people like especially well, even if only at the present time...mine too come and go...looking back I would have to say the 3 that always are near the top are:

Know Who You Are At Every Age
Bluebeard
Suckling the Mender

the 3rd slot vies closely with I wear your Ring, RR&R, Itchy Glowbo...others.

Milo D. Cooper

Three favorite... let me think.

Orange Appled and Suckling the Mender, for certain.

After that, I don't know, probably Athol Brose, on most days.

Yeah....difficult, ain't it?

OK..

"She Will Destroy You"

"Violaine"

Frou Frou Foxes"

Just pushing up behind these three, were "Musette & Drums", "Itchy Glowbo Blow" and "High Monkey Monk".

And about another 40 others.

Oy vey!

How much fun these threads can be!

The top three of the day were:
1. Eyes are Mosaics
2. Those Eyes, That Mouth
3. Melonella

But "My Truth" sounded so beautiful just a moment ago...

Oh, how I wish they would release the material from the unfinished album! Isn't it amazing how much their sound continued to mature with FCC and M&K?

Perhaps there should be a thread to reminisce about where and when it was we heard our first Cocteau Twins song. I recall hearing "Carolyn's Fingers" and "Blue Bell Knoll" and thinking how otherwordly those songs sounded. Years later, they still sound as if I just heard them yesterday.

And I can't believe no-one mentioned Touch Upon Touch!

Or...Feathers-Oar-Blades (full length version, please note!)

or...My Love Paramour
(note: the secret of that song's success is that a part of it sounds vaguely like the old Warm Sounds 1967 hit `Birds & Bees' -a song that I've always had a peculiar obssession with)

Off the top of my head....

Has to be Carolyn's Fingers, I Wear Your Ring and the
amazing "Ella Megalast Burls Forever", which gives me
goosepimples everytime I play it. My wife and I had this
as our first song at our wedding. I can asure you we got
some strange looks, but we knew it was the right track to
play, angelic, soothing, ethereal, fucking brilliant.

...only 3 eh....well...like everyone else says, they change all the time, but here's whats at the top of my list now-AT THIS VERY second...
1. alas dies laughing (love the EVIL guitar!)
2. pale clouded white (reminds me of flying)
3. In our angelhood (catchy as fuck...wait...am I allowed to swear? oh well.)

I think the whole combo in Alas Dies Laughing is wonderfully sinister. I personally think it is one of their scariest tracks. Love the BBC version.

Good one about Pale Clouded White, I think I see what ya mean.

I was saying on else-thread the guitar mix in Angelhood is reminiscient of Feathers Oar Blades..that appeal to you as well? I think it is cool.

Sorry, I can`t think only in three songs...
I love Pink Orange Red' s live versions, specially in Toronto, 1990...

I only have articles and photografics of this concert, but I wanna have some videotape of this performance...)

On the whole:
Aikea-Guinea
Calfskin Smack
Tranquil Eye

By the way, I downloaded a fab drum and base version of Essence the other day - try and seek it out!
Also, there's a Massive Attack remix of The Thinner The Air that's well worth looking out for (not that I condone that kind of behaviour! Does that get me off the hook, legally?)

like most, can't limit to three, changes on a daily basis:

Pandora
Pink Orange Red (for the last 18 years)
Oil of Angels
Seekers Who Are Lovers
My Love Paramour (longer than 18 years)
Cherry Coloured Funk
Frou Frou Foxes
obviously, Song to the Siren - Cocs in a different guise

can I just say, I think it's really great that people stil care and their preferences change dynamically after all these years.. with some bands you'd get people who had a rigid top 3 for the whole of their lives..

Oops, just reading over the postings again ..forgot the Harold Budd collaborations:

She Will destry You
Eyes Are Mosaics

laurasilver:

Oil of Angels! Yes! I think this is such an over-looked song, and yet I personally feel it's one of, if not the, most romantic and beautiful songs the cocteaus created.
