Ever started a conversation that you wish, with every fibre of your being, that you hadn't?

I was trawling for CDs on Tuesday and dropped into a shop in Birmingham called "Swordfish". Great place, small, dark and poky and the staff there really know their shit.

Anyhow, I was scooting thru the second-hand section when I heard a familiar tune start. Then this God-awful rendition of "Song To The Siren" warbled out of the store's hi-fi. Now, I KNEW that Robert Plant had done a version of this song - my own common sense should have told me to figure that it was he. Here's the conversation which followed me not keeping my mouth shut:

Me: "Who's murdering this?

Swordfish Employee: "Robert Plant"

Me: "Christ, this is bad...Buckley will be turning in his grave..."

SE: "Yeah..."

Me: "And Liz Fraser, come to that."

SE: "Yeah? Is she dead then?"

Me: "No, I..."

2nd SE: "Who's dead?"

1st SE: "Liz Fraser."

Me: "No, what I meant was..."

2nd SE: "When was this?"

Me: "Never...well, not 'never', we all have to go sometime..."

2nd SE: "Yeah, but she wasn't all that old, surely?"

Me: "She's not dead."

1st SE: "You just said she was."

Me: "It was a turn of phrase."

1st SE: "Oh, sorry...I though you said she'd be turning in her grave."

Me: "I did."

2nd SE: "She is dead then?"

Me: "Yeah...can I have this Roy Harper CD?"

Madre Mia.
