just curious.........
as many of my cocteau twins cds are rarities i tend to have several copies of the same disc. at lleast one for home, one for the car and one for the collection. if the disc tends to be extremely rare i will burn copies of it and keep the original in my collection.
i live in fear of losing or damaging rare discs and artwork so i feel it's a must, especially since i've had cocteau discs stolen from my car before.
so...i often actually purchase several copies of a pressed cd as i'm not really into cdrs. does anyone else do this?

No hon, just you. ;)
However, I just saw an ad tonight for some kind of CD protector sleeve that snaps on the CD to avoid scratches. I'm assuming that this sleeve stays on while playing??

yes. It's a clear, thin 'shield' that fits onto the CD.

I'm ok with CDRs in general, but I don't trust any kind of sleeve or decal that is applied to the CD. Too thick = can interfere with the player mechanism. ...and if you ever try to remove it, it could utterly destroy the disc.
The important thing I learned that a lot of people don't seem to realize: on any CD or CDR, the side with the label silkscreened on to it is the delicate side. People like to set CDs on surfaces with the label side down. Not a good idea. The silver reflective surface is only atoms thick, and it is under a thin clearcoat that is painted on directly underneath the label printing. The tiniest scratch in this silver layer shows up as a 'clear' line in the disc, and it is irreparably ruined.
and no, I don't buy multiple simultaneous copies of anything. I did buy the CT remasters, but then traded in the old versions. No completist, me.

mmmender Babe, you ain't alone - I've got multipe copies of everything I can find. I try and get a minimum of at least 3, but quite often I've ended up with more over the years because I buy copies that are in really good condition, promos, rarities or anything I think is underpriced almost regardless of how many I already have. I hate to think how many 7" Peppermint Pigs I have - probably 7 or 8 at least. I've also been known to buy foreign editions on the spur of the moment thinking I didn't have them only to discover 3 copies at home later on. That's the peril when a collection gets too big to remember, not that I'm worried about it mind - you can't have too many copies really :).

I download everything... CD-R's are all I have, with the exception of a My Bloody Valentine CD and a Nina Nastasia CD.
I had a ton of cassettes, but I was never much into vinyl. If theres really something I want on vinyl, I buy it and give it to my friend, who is a DJ. That way I'm helping him make music, even though he is going to eventually destroy it... I know it doesnt make sense... but I am a compulsive buyer at times.
I had to sell all my cds last year because... actually I shouldn't be telling you all this. Forget it.

I pretty much never play my CDs anymore. I've sold off about 100 over the past year or so, and the ones I still have are there partly for nostalgia value, partly as backup in case my hard drive ever gets wiped. I have a couple hundred CDR compilations to listen to, and I burn new ones before I take any long drives.

Ever seen that movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
Great flick.
I would buy only one copy of a cd. Then, taking great care not to get fingerprints and bogeys and eye ointment and stuff on the playing side, I would play it lots at first and pore over any booklet info. Then over time would play it less. But all my cds always in excellent condition. Which is just as well cos I had to sell all my cds last year because... actually I shouldn't be telling you all this. Forget it.
But keeping them SEALED??? Oh stop it!

I only buy multiple copies of vinyl as it is by far my prefered medium. Typically I'm just looking for a copy in better condition or a special/limited edition.

i don't usually buy two copies of a CD, but for albums i really like, i want to own the vinyl (for home use) and a CD (for the car, etc.) so i have quite a few duplicates.

The only CD's I've ever obsessively protected and looked after were my CT ones. The rest are hopelessly scratched and dirty. Even signed ones!

This is as it should be, rad. ;)
I listen to CDr's or the IPOD, leaving the originals in their cases

That's clever. How do you copy the original discs if you don't remove them from the cases? By telepathy?
