LED ZEPPELIN legend JIMMY PAGE is to make a very special appearance in LONDON next week.

The guitarist will be plunging his hands into wet concrete outside the new Piccadilly Circus Virgin Megastore on Monday (August 23) at 10am, officially opening of the ’Walk Of Fame’.

The handprints will be the first to be immortalised in a permanent display of paving stones outside of the store, which will soon feature others from musical icons.

Page is best known for his work with the hugely influential rock band – famous for their anthems ’Stairway To Heaven’, ’Black Dog’, ’Whole Lotta Love’, ’Dazed And Confused’ and ’Rock And Roll’.

The event will mark the opening of the new Virgin Megastore. Other acts set to appear include The Killers and Faithless.

A major national Playstation 2 knockout competition is also set to take place in the store during the afternoon, as well as a martial arts demonstration.

What a good choice - the hands that brought the world more pleasure than anyone else's. Except maybe Courtney Love's, but that's an obscure thought that we shouldn't dwell on.

Supposedly Robin used drum samples from a hard rock collection made by Zeppelin(John Bonham) for an album or two... so if you look at it that way, I guess you can hear a bit of Zep in there!

It was Robert Plant that brought Cocteau Twins (and Bulgarian folk music) to my life. I admire the man enormously and I vaguely recall an interview in the early 80s where he was asked what he was currently listening to. He mentioned CTs and, on my next trip to the local library, I picked up Head Over Heels. I'd never heard of them before but suddenly, a new world opened up.

Does he still listen to CTs ? Who knows ?

Ah Jimmy. I remember those rumors about him selling his soul to the devil to write good music. I was so mesmerised by LZ's music that I almost believed it was true. There was no other way to explain the bands' affect on me.

LED ZEPPELIN, JANIS JOPLIN and JERRY LEE LEWIS are to be honoured at this year’s GRAMMYS with LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT awards.

The esteemed ceremony takes place on February 13 in Los Angeles, with awards handed out by the US Recording Academy.

The artist’s achievements will be celebrated at a special ceremony the night before the main event, as well as during the Grammy Awards, which are thought to be the musical equivalent of the Oscars.

Other artists honoured at the event include Eddy Arnold, jazz legend Jelly Roll Morton, original members of the Carter Family country band, the late Art Blakey and blues pianist Pinetop Perkins, reports the BBC.

The Recording Academy says the awards recognise "legendary performers, archetypal musicians and cultural ambassadors" as well as "profoundly inspiring figures".

They do their best to appeal to younger voters by regularly shunning suited formality, using slang and showing off their knowledge of popular culture.
But it seems the musical tastes of Britain's politicians are stuck mostly in the 1970s.

When asked by the British Library to name their favourite number one album, Led Zeppelin's 1969 classic Led Zeppelin II came out top. Albums by The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple were also popular. David Bowie, Elvis, Blondie, U2, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie also made it on to the list.

According to Tory shadow immigration minister Damian Green, Led Zeppelin II is "the ultimate album for teenage boys - metal as art. No-one ever topped it. The opening riff is straightforward perfection".

Lib Dem MP Lembit Opik said: "Zeppelin made a new kind of music. They created a genre many have copied but no-one has equalled. And Whole Lotta Love is the greatest rock song ever."

Labour's Alison Seabeck added: "Led Zeppelin simply blew me away."

However, for Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell it was The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Education Secretary Alan Johnson preferred the band's Revolver, along with Labour colleague Peter Kilfoyle. Ex-Conservative leader Michael Howard went for The White Album instead.

Respect MP George Galloway chose Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan, while Labour's Rosemary McKenna picked the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. "It's a fantastic dance album and never fails to make me smile," she said. "It's the most played on my iPod and in my car."

Lib Dem MP Mark Oaten singled out Human League's 1980s classic Dare. "This album reminds me of my last year at school and brings up a lot of happy memories. Every track is a killer, not a filler," he said.

The Manic Street Preachers' This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain's choice.

Lib Dem Jo Swinson, who at 26 is the Commons' youngest MP, went for Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory, while Schools Minister Jim Knight and Labour colleague Ian Pearson selected Pulp's Different Class.

Tory Mark Field said Swing Out Sister's It's Better to Travel was his favourite, commenting: "It brings back wonderful memories of my undergraduate days in the mid-to-late 1980s. It still brings me out in goose pimples and smiles."

Rock legends the Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin are are to take music memorabilia website, Wolfgang’s Vault to court. They claim the site’s owner William Sagan is illegally selling vintage recordings and memorabilia.

The plaintiffs, Grateful Dead Productions, Carlos Santana and members of Led Zeppelin and The Doors are attempting to get Sagan to stop selling the materials that he obtained from the estate of Bill Graham, a concert promoter who died in a 1991 helicopter crash.

Wolfgang’s Vault, based in San Francisco is a hugely popular memorabilia site that sells concert posters, shirts, photographs and recordings, but which the artists claim were never authorised for Sagan to sell and distribute.

Bob Weir, of the Grateful Dead, said in a statement, "We have never given permission for our images and material to be used in this way, what Sagan is doing is stealing. He is stealing what is most important to us - our work, our images and our music - and is profiting from the good will of our fans."

The lawsuit also accuses William Sagan of trademark infringement by selling baby clothing showing the artists' names.

Sagan has yet to comment about the claims, saying that he had not yet been served with the lawsuit.

The band remaining band members have always agreed that it would be disrespectful and ridiculous to make new music without John Bonham. I wouldn't doubt they are on good enough terms to play, but the reunion thing is bullshit...they have only played man down, what, three times I think. if they did decide to play together it would never be under the name "Led Zeppelin" anyway.

Rare Led Zeppelin guitar available again

Jimmy Page's double neck is back after 36 years

15.Mar.07 3:55pm
The iconic famous double neck guitar used by Led Zeppelin (http://www.nme.com/artists/led-zeppelin) star Jimmy Page is to be manufactured again after 36 years.

The guitarist has teamed-up with Gibson to replicate his original EDS-1275 which he used throughout the 1970s.

Up to 25 limited edition replicas have been designed, each of which will feature Page's signature on the rear of the headstock, plus a certificate of authenticity signed by the guitarist.

It will also come with a Led Zeppelin (http://www.nme.com/artists/led-zeppelin) DVD box set and a copy of a private interview with Page.

"After knowing that 'Stairway (To Heaven)' was going to have to be recorded live and the fact it was recorded with 12 strings acoustic and electric, I needed something which could reflect the pacing of that song," said Page of his decision to use the unlikely looking instrument. "That song dictated the fact that I played the Gibson double neck and from then on it became iconic."

Only 25 replicas will be made available from March 18 at a retail price of $33,500 (£17,310).

A further 250 vintage Original Spec Signature Double Necks are also being made available which will not feature the signature on the headstock, and cost between $10,000 (£5,200) and $12,000 (£6,200).

For more information go to Gibson.com (http://www.gibson.com/).

Led Zeppelin to reunite?

Band are rumoured to be in talks for memorial gig

28.Jun.07 10:33am
Led Zeppelin (http://www.nme.com/artists/led-zeppelin) are in talks to reunite for a memorial concert.

The band are apparently in discussions to reform for a one-off gig in London for their late record boss Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

It is thought singer Robert Plant guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside late drummer John Bonham's son Jason for the gig.

A source close to the band said: "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date.

"And no one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it all does well and they don't all fall out."

The band have only performed a handful of concerts since they split in 1980, including Live Aid in 1985.

"It has been hoped for and denied for years," the source told World Entertainment News Network. "But this is the closest they have ever come to a reunion tour. The feeling is that this is going to happen next year."

It's official : Led Zeppelin are to reform for a tribute concert to the Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will perform together for the first time in 19 years.

Tickets for the one-off show at the O2 arena in London on 26 November will cost £125 and will be allocated by ballot.

Promoter Harvey Goldsmith said tickets would only be available to those who registered on a dedicated website - and that a limit of two applications per household had been imposed.

Other acts lined up for the tribute show include Foreigner and Paolo Nutini.

Some reports say that there have been 20 million registrations so far. That would mean about 1,400 people for every ticket. If they are given out in pairs, that means a 1 in 2,800 chance of being successful. :(

LED ZEPPELIN GUITARIST JIMMY PAGE FRACTURES FINGER

The Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert, originally scheduled for Monday, November 26th and featuring Led Zeppelin, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Paul Rodgers, Paolo Nutini and Foreigner has been postponed until December 10th due to Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page fracturing his finger.

The injury to Page’s finger, which was sustained this past weekend, will not allow him to play guitar for 3 weeks.

The specialist treating Mr. Page said, “I have examined the fracture to Mr. Page’s finger, and it is my opinion that with proper rest and treatment, he will be ready to resume rehearsing in three weeks time, and thus able to perform on December 10th.”

Man, I'm sorry if it sounds cavalier, but my reasons are pretty solid. The tickets will have been allocated, and as for the comparison with Coachella: that's what I'm afraid of! - imagine the dissapointment if it's less than brilliant :)

If it helps, Douglas Adams said that it's more life-affirming to think your missing an awesome spectacle than to watch it and find out out it's not all it's cracked up to be (he was talking about cricket in either Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency or one of the later Hichhikers books, if you want the un-paraphrased, better explained, version.)

It took me a long time to appreciate what they had to offer. I was always too punk rock to like "archaic classic rock" bands like Zeppelin, but now I would give my eyetooth to see them tomorrow night.

Three million people applied for The Spice Girls reunion tour, but according to the radio tonight, 80 million were interested in tickets for this single Led Zeppelin show. There's money in nostalgia.

My mate has just posted the soundcheck setlist on another forum, if anyone's interested.

Sorry, Russell :(

Major Spoiler Alert!

Songs played in Soundcheck:

Good Times/Bad Times, Ramble On, In My Time Of Dying, No Quarter and Nobody's Fault But Mine, D’yer Maker Communication Breakdown.

Other songs likely to make an appearance:

Dazed & Confused, For Your Life, Houses of The Holy, Kashmir, Stairway, Achilles Last Stand, Whole Lotta Love.

No acoustic songs, apparently!

Notes on performance:

"Sound and performance was totally amazing. Page was on fire. Completely awe inspiring!!"

"I was told Page's sound was very full... monster. forgot to ask what equipment was, other than the Les Paul".

Trainspotters' Equipment List:

Les Paul
8 string bass
Fender bass
Amber vistalite drum kit
Theremin is present and working.

That list is similar to the speculation I've been reading over the weekend. It just about makes a two-hour show.

I expect that they will play Rock and Roll and, rumour has it, Carouselambra as well. I'm not so sure about Achilles' Last Stand, though.

The 'no acoustic numbers' theory fits with the Knebworth '79 experience and is probably right.

For Your Life is a great choice - I don't think they've ever played it live.

There's money in being the best live band in history, too.

Aparently that was 80 million hits on the web site, but still over one million people applied for tickets.

and a lot of people with no fucking taste!!!!

If BBC Radio 5 is to be believed, "Black Dog" was played last night .... and now I can't get the tune out of my brain!

and incidentally, they interviewed a number of people on the radio last night and this morning who bought spare tickets from people who had bought pairs of tickets in the "lottery" but had "no one to go with". Two guys paid £200 each for tickets outside the stadium and got in!

So I hope that Forny and Fritter are still on talking terms ... ;)

It's an age thing, Beth ......

What, repeating yourself? :)

So, I got in last night after an utterly dpectaucular and transcendent performance by Sunn 0))), Boris and Earth, put the midnight news on in bed and did feel a twinge of remorse when I heard how good Black Dog sounded. Still, I've heard that a well-known band has already been booked as support act for the tour, so fingers crossed.

Led Zeppelin reunion gig 'too emotional' for Bonham
11/12/2007 - 07:08:39

The Led Zeppelin reunion gig was almost thrown into jeopardy last night when drummer Jason Bonham suffered an attack of nerves shortly before the band was due to take to the stage.

now that would have been interesting - cancelation due to an attack of nerves with all those nice friendly people in the audience sat waiting for the band to come onstage ....

no "Immigrant Song" - glad I didn't go now!

and I wonder how many younger people there would have made the connection to "Waynes' World" when the sparked up "Stairway to Heaven"

That always reminded of when I worked in a Music Shop during college vacations and we used to have "hairy arsed" youngsters come in, take a guitar down off the wall, plug into an amp and start on the opening guitar riff for "Stairway" - the guitar geezer working in the shop had a "circuit breaker" wired into the power supplies to all the amps and normally they got the first 6 notes out and he would flick the switch to cut the power to all the amps in the shop!

hilarious when you were in the know ....
