I am sure that all CT fans have noticed that Liz's voice changing often ,especially in live. 1983.1986.1990.1994,the voice is totally different! How did she do that? Did she really have an operation on her vocal cords ? She used her falsetto voice more often after 1990s.

well all i know is that prior to the 1994 tour...she suffered a head injury swimming in a dolphin tank at Sea World, thus the grotesque chorkeling on that tour....
and then the redemption....1996

is that mean the injury just hurted her mind & drove her crazy on that tour, but nothing happened to her voice ,she just change her singing way, right?
No we are just joking Hollis, she did not get injured as far as we know. But her singing style in 1994 has been called dolphin-like on these boards.
I am under the impression that the change in style was intentional and some sort of reaction to the events and people around her.

Yes, indeed. By the time the entourage reached Saskwonchin, Illinois, she believed herself to be the re-incarnation of Alberto Scuttles, the Bulgarian nose-whistler and otter juggler.
Terrible time, it was.

Without resurrecting the whole debate, Hollis, you should know a minority of us here loved the '94 vocal style. Very raw, primitive, and from-the-gut. Really powerful (but we need not debate again; we have all agreed to different opinions again).
But to your wider question, I have generally preferred her live vocals (I agree with all that '96 were lovely). Her live vocals tend (i think) to be lower and deeper, edgier and more passionate. Seems to me the energy of performance in studio and on stage are very different. In the studio there is a sense that with the opportunity to do a thousand takes to get it right, the goal is to be more polished and pretty; whereas live performances are about energy and about the moment, and often feel more raw. I have wished that Liz recorded in her live style more often (there are a few tracks that have hints--can't think specifically at the moment), but presume that she felt compelled to present the prettier side of her voice in the studio.

Yep I am quite agreed with u . I love Liz's live. It really kills me. Liz's voice is the most special one in the world . She can change her voice 4 times in 10 years. Her live vocals are getting lower and deeper, but her speaking vocals are getting sweeter and softer!
That is really fantastic! How did she do that? Is this just a physical vocal change?(after she had a baby in 1989) or she has really taken a vocal training? Her falsetto voice is apparently much better in1990s. I am really curious about that!
