View Full Version : Liz Fraser Collaborations/Solo releases
Just curious to what everybody's favourite Fraser collaboration/contribution is from Massive Attack, Peter Gabriel, Felt, Ian McCulloch etc. Personally I love "Downside Up" on Gabriel's Ovo album. And solo track (the few there are) it would have to be "Take Me With You" - bloody beautiful.
mine just has to be 'This Love' with Craig Armstrong - the slightly excessive use of the cymbal stops this from being the perfect track

The same. Definitely.
How could I forget about "This Love"? Anyone heard the Bryan Ferry version - sorry Ferry fans, but after Liz's version no one could top it!!
I like "Time Baby 3" with Medecine.

I never knew what she was singing there. That is stunning.
Thanks Funkjedi!
My favourite collaboration is "Be Still". Great melody, beautiful singing.
Liz w/ the Bathers - "Angel on Ruskin" from the Bathers' 1995 cd Sunpowder; and Liz w/ Felt, "Primitive Painters." 'Solo' (of sorts, it was a collaboration w/ the soundtrack composer) would be "Take Me With You." That whole film just made me so, so sad, and when Liz's voice came in on the soundtrack, the tears started to fall.

Hmm. I really need to get in gear and hear some of these. I've heard Angels on Ruskin, and the Massive Attack stuff, of course, but little else. Of those, I'd go with Black Milk as well. While I do like Teardrop, sometimes I lose patience with it because there isn't a whole lot going on in the song. It hits a sparse groove and just stays there throughout.. sometimes, that's not enough for me. Or, it works only as semi-background music, where I can let my attention drift off from time to time.

A bit off-topic - I was viewing some Ferry solo videos on youtube the other day. Some of those are downright painful to watch. I loved his early days of Roxy persona, but his latter day super-suave demeanor.. not so much (awkward moves, facial expressions. yikes.)

'Group Four' and 'Mary' for me.

Yes. Same here. I had that film (The Winter Guest) on tape but my VCR ate it. Damn.

I like lots of her efforts with Massive Attack, especially Teardrop, but I have a great "time and place" spot in my heart for Candleland, with Ian McC...
a while back on one of polls, a collaboration with Sinead was suggested. i didn't know one had been done. i got it playing in my head right now......'Children...Be still....' great SuperNanny show last night....great combination of voices!! hbd:shitfan:  :nopity: :help:
My favs are 'Mary' and 'Take Me With You' - I find both heart-wrenching.

Teardrop always makes me smile. The live BBC 06' version is killer!
Recently, it's been (thanks to the wonderful PJK) "All flowers in time" Liz/Jeff Buckley that makes me swoon!

I love liz so much that almost any other vocalist gets in the way of her in any collaboration. Jeff Buckley's 'All Flowers In Time' plus Peter Gabriel or Ian McCulloch can keep up with her though. When the guys can't even sing (The Bathers/Felt) it is like nails on a chalkboard to get to a few low in the mix bits at the end with Liz. I am surprised no one had Future Sound Of London's 'Life Forms' or Massive Attack's recently released (UK import) Liz tracks, especially 'Silent Spring' .
"At Last...." & "Another Day"

It's that bit she did for the V&A Museum exhibit. I've only heard 30-second clips -- anyone found a full version anywhere?? I also believe the music to ExpMood is what loops on her website, so it's likely to be on the mythical solo album.

Oh, OK, I do have that 30 second ditty. It's really pretty! I love it. I ended up putting it as my first tune on last years X-mas mix.
I like that you said "mythical" solo LP. That's what it's looking more like. Im so freaked that nothings been done on her website for over a year now. WHAT"S UP WITH THAT! I'd kill to do a site for her!
God damn it! She really must not care at all about her site. Again, why not just let mmmender do it (again)!

Same here when Liz starts to singing:crying: Ran out to buy the "Winter Guest" ST. Played that song to death, then decided that it was going to have to be played at my funeral. One of many Liz/ CT songs that will be played. OK, Im getting morbid. "Take me with you" is still one of my favorite Liz solo pieces.

This Love - yes, on the Craig Armstrong cd "the space between us"
Appears (? acapella from Twin Lights promo video) - no, but the mp3 is floating around out there
Love Insane - on Dif Juz "Extractions"
Dream Baby - on the "In Dreams" soundtrack album
Take Me With You- on the "Winter Guest" soundtrack album
Downside Up - on the "OVO Milennium show" album by Peter Gabriel
Black Milk - on Massive Attack "Mezzanine"
Black Melt - not sure where to find that one
Silent Spring - I think it's out there in mp3 form
Kala & Mary by Yann Tiersen - on the Yann Tiersen album "Les Retrouvailles"
Lifeforms (Future Sound of London promo mix) - on the "Lifeforms" remixes EP, not on the album
Song To The Siren - on This Mortal Coil's "It'll End in Tears"
Teardrop (live BBC MaidaVale) - original is on on Massive Attack "Mezzanine"
All Flowers In Time - only in mp3 form; it was never supposed to be released anywhere
Both Silent Spring and Black Melt (which is an early version of Black Milk) are from the Massive Attack Collected 2-disc version.

Black Melt (which is an early version of Black Milk)
Black Melt - As a direct response, to Massive Attack being sued for the unauthorised use of a Manfred Mann sample, which led to a costly out of court settlement with Manfred Mann, 3D took Black Milk and removed the offending sample entirely and from there built an entirely new song based on a more "new wave" sound, with no samples whatsoever and placed Elizabeth Fraser's original vocals on top.
