NME has released a special side magazine this month called GOTH. their exclusive publications are referred to as NME ORIGINALS. in the GOTH issue there is mention of Cocteau Twins. I'll grab the issue today and post the article later.

interesting to read the singles and LP reviews and be reminded how lazy and unimaginative the average music jounalist was (is). The endless initial comparisons to Siouxie are so dull (and plain wrong).

it should sell okay......the post-goth kids will now have a Teenbeat style mag they can call their own.

I suppose as a recycled historical document the Goth NME Originals is worth getting as it places the first 5 CT LPs in sort of musical historical context, though I always felt the Cocs were more in the experimental/ambient/electronica field rather than Goth. For your money you get the NME reviews of Lullabies, Head over Heels, Sunburst and snowblind, Treasure, Pearly Dewdrops' Drops, tiny Dynamine and Echoes in a shallow bay, Victorialand, Loves easy tears, Blue Bell Knoll, Iceblink luck and Heaven or Las Vegas.
Also included are two interviews; one from 1983 by Paul Morley and one from 1985 by Steve Sutherland.

see now this is where it gets interesting because i wouldn't place cocteau twins into any of the categories you've provided either. perhaps that's why i love them so.....they just aren't easily pigeon-holed.

The shows up until early 83 were attended by pretty much the same pre-black clothes goth crowd that were going to sisters of mercy/bauhaus and the like gigs but from 83 onwards it was pretty much your average indie kid crowd for the rest of the 80s.

One early gig I went to had a 'BP Oil' works mini-bus outside as a bunch of guys had come in to see the show from Grangemouth. My mate claimed that one of them had lyrics from Garlands painted onto his works overalls but sadly I never saw that. Perhaps they were....oil worker music originally!

I'll have to look out for that mag as I am very fond of pre 85 goth music.

You know who I am :-)

Anyway, I bought the magazine and what a treat. I thought it was possibly the best ever representation of what goth was in the 80s and made me feel quite nostalgic. I feel it should be handed out at assorted 'goth' clubs now as a history lesson.

Just a shame for 84 they used the Easter Melody Maker photo shoot and not the November one. Hm...NME originals. Just realised that half the material in it is from Melody Maker. Guess they bought the rights to it or they were published by the same people maybe.

unless you have serious reservations about 'big' stores, or if there is not one near you, i saw the previous installment, on 'GLAM', at the counter in a Tower Records.

but i have not been since this one appeared. $10 is a bit much, too.

That would be very good of you, yup. I forgot my password, along with the passwords to every other site I was on, in a computer crash quite a while back and only now have got round to coming back on here and the 4AD ones.

done! amazingly you've just jumped from 3 posts to 80. not only that you've been a member for just about the same amount of time as i have.

I have only the vaguest memory of joining to be honest. How on earth have you got 14000 plus posts?! :-)

In fact I've just noticed quite a few people have enormous numbers. I was wondering if I am missing some threads when I view as I find the layout a bit confusing but I've plumped for the 'active topics' bit now to navigate round and that's less confusing.

Probably isn't confusing at all. I'm just not great with things on screens. I need simple things and less options - a bit like life really :-)

....nearly 15,000 posts simply because i never leave the place and people can't shut me up.

ps...do you still watch buffy?

OK :-)

Yeah I still like Buffy. I got into a bit of a merchandise hell with it all at one point and to this day collect the DVDs, books, magazines and cards and I was collecting all the toys (er..action figures!) but after the multi versioned Willows recently I stopped once I had them. They site on a book shelf with other Willows and I talk to them too much...

I think I would cry if I added up how much it all cost me :-)

this is a three-page article which was originally printed in NME on november 16, 1985.

note: at the bottom of the photograph........"FRAZER" and "THE" Cocteau Twins......oh the shame!

this was their review of "Treasure" which originally appeared in NME on november 10, 1984. this article reminds me just how much i hate NME....although at least it's "FRASER" this time around....although seeing as the SAME GUY (Steve Sutherland) wrote both articles i guess he either has a poor memory, never reads his own backi-ssues or liner notes!

Well, I got a copy of this mag and seeing all the other non-Cocteau stuff in it reminded me that "goth" isn't really my bag. Although I admit to having some Sisters of Mercy albums.

hahahaha, i missed that, mmmender, months ago! HA!
anyway, i just wanted to say that i finally got my hands on this - it came in the mail last week.
i really enjoyed it overall though the reviews are really crap. cocteaus write records like siouxsie? yeah, right.
i xeroxed the full-page one of ct to put on my wall :>
the pictures are the high point of the issue- um, esp. that one of the birthday party with mick & nick looking great, i don't really care much about calvert, but tracy pew & rowland s. howard are looking pretty . . uh . . .yeah. nice fishnet shirt & cowboy hat, pew. that's the greatest picture of all time! and the one of nick cave living in squalor! HAHA!

you can buy it from the NME shop at www.nme.com
expect it to cost about $20 if you're shipping to the US
i'd scan the article, but my scanner is broken.

Have you tried your local WH Smiths? If it's still available then they'll be able to get it as they are by far and away the biggest magazine distributor in the UK.

I went down to my local WH Smiths and was told that unless a magazine is physically on the shelves thay cannot get hold of back dated magazines as they dont feature on their book database - so the NME website is the best source - though £2 P&P seems a bit high !!
