out of all your cocteau twins albums which one would you say you play most often?
personally, i think i'm on my 5th edition of HOLV. i play it so much that i kill the disc and buy a new one. i'm not too keen on burning cds, i love having the original disc and the artwork to look at. besides, the band makes more money that way.
HOLV for me too. Its the most played cd i own.
Four Calendar Cafe for me simply because it's got Pur on it. Otherwise it's probably a tie between HOLV and Milk & Kisses

y'know david....i've always been meaning to ask you what the deal is with your obsession with pur. i mean, it's a great track, don't get me wrong....but i would never pick it as one of my top 10 tracks. i dunno what it is but i think it's the beginning that bothers me slightly.....although once the song gets going it's delicious!
Dunno - we all have particular things that strike us as being right or perfect, and for me Pur just hits all the buttons. I'm not sure I could even explain exactly what it is about it that get's me, but it still gives me tingles after all these years. I know I like the way it crescendos - I like Treasure Hiding for precisely the same reason. I also like the 'bell' sounds that come in as a counterpoint. I actually don't like to over-analyse why I like things just in case I break the mystique :)
I just wanted to add that I feel pretty much the same about all the art I like. I like it because I like it, not because I've analysed the meaning, the mood the artist was in or what he had for dinner. I'd even say I feel the same about literature a lot of the time as well, and I definitely regard CT music as art, probably more so than any other recording artist. When I listen with my eyes closed I can see shapes and colours, not consciously so I could describe them, but way back in my brain as I let the sound wash over me. Interestingly I don't think the patterns are ever the same from one listen to the next. Or maybe I've been drinking too much tea :D

i go through phases.
this year i've happily rediscovered 4CC and it's gotten far more play than the others.
the all-time champ, though, in terms of total plays is probably HOLV.
oh, and please count me as a huge Pur fan too.

Garlands - particularly the first four tracks.
lately, it's got to be Head Over Heels.
though it times it could have been any other, except Garlands, which, as with tofu and fried mushrooms, i always give a second (or third or fourth...) chance and never come around.
also, i made these two mixes for my sister, and have been listening to them more than a single album lately:
One
When Mama Was Moth
Five Ten Fiftyfold
In the Gold Dust Rush
Musette and Drums
From The Flagstones
Because Of Whirl-Jack
Song to the Siren
Millimillenary
The Spangle Maker
Lorelei
Pandora
Donimo
Aikea-Guinea
Pink Orange Red
Pale Clouded White
Lazy Calm
Those Eyes, That Mouth
Orange Appled
Two
Carolyn's Fingers
Cico Buff
A Kissed Out Red Floatboat
Ella Megalast Burls Forever
The High Monkey-Monk
Fifty-Fifty Clown
Iceblink Luck
Heaven Or Las Vegas
Mizake The Mizan
Evangeline
Bluebeard
Summerhead
Summer-Blink
Violaine
Serpentskirt
Ups
Tranquil Eye
Round
Circling Girl
Seekers Who Are Lovers
Touch Upon Touch
etc etc

I think what gets me in PUR is the lead guitar part that ends with that glorious whammy bar dip which ushers in the wonderful outro......that whammy dip got me misty eyed the first few times I heard it...FCC is the one I have played most over the years...the ep's/singles from M&K would be 2nd and then HOLV and BBK are tied for third

Victorialand for me, on the average...for one thing, like the meditation thing PJK mentioned, I tend to be able to run Victorialand for several repetitions when I do put it in..it also was my first, so on cumulative listens, it wins easy....but really my top 4 are pretty close over the psat few years, the others being, in order:
FCC
HoLV
BBK
Also, I like Pur pretty well too, I think Summerhead is pretty perfect as well, I never tire of it, though it is a bit loud by comparison to the rest of the album. On FCC, I also really love some tunes rarely mentioned here, Essence and My Truth. Oil of Angels would likely be my least favorite on that album, though I still like it.

I really don't have a favorite CT album, mainly because I think the best tracks are strewn out over all their albums, ep's and singles rather evenly. Presently, I've been listening to a 2 cd compilation that I have made for a few friends of mine:
cd 1
1) In the Gold Dust Rush
2) From the Flagstones
3) Lorelei
4) Oomingmak (instrumental)
5) Pink Orange Red
6) Whales Tails
7) Orange-Appled
8) The Itchy Glowbo Blow
9) Cico Buff
10) Cherry-Coloured Funk
11) Heaven or Las Vegas
12) Dials
13) Winter Wonderland
14) Oil of Angels
15) Pur
16) Ice-Pulse
17) An Elan
18) Half-Gifts
19) Smile
20) Circling Girl (original version)
cd 2
1) Multifoiled
2) The Spangle Maker
3) Ivo
4) Beatrix
5) Plain Tiger
6) Fluffy Tufts
7) Love's Easy Tears
8) Carolyn's Fingers
9) Suckling the Mmmender
10) Pitch the Baby
11) Fotzepolitic
12) Summerblink
13) Bluebeard
14) My Truth
15) Three Swept
16) Frosty the Snowman
17) Cherry-Coloured Funk (Otherness)
18) Round
19) Eperdu
20) Tranqul Eye

moon and the melodies seriously depresses me it just sounds too old, I have a problem with listening to old stuff whereas Garlands sounds like it could have been made not too long ago. Treasure I also have a problem with, the drums on most of the tracks sound archaic but I luuurrrvvve Aloysius
my fave is still BBC Sessions and Blue bell knoll, I like the more accessible stuff they made on the whole.

I really love MatM along w/Victorialand...I can easily play both on repeat back to back...but often for me it stands apart, and I probably just don't put it in quite as much.
For this thread I was trying to think about which gets the most listens...which may be one way of stating my favorite, but I don't see it like that....I mean, they are all so close, I wouldn't say I'm absolute about album favorites...particularly now, since I have all of it on my IPOD and computers, I am often playing a shuffle of songs.

i'm finding these poll results very interesting.
seems like their mid-career discography is the most popular.

funny how so many fans seem to associate their early discography with that sort of angst. oddly enough, i find garlands to be a great album and quite uplifting at times. sure there are quite a few moody tracks but they certainly don't make up the bulk of the release. i still find time to play garlands and i still love it...especially the title track.
i'd love to hear a remix of garlands - done by someone respectable though - like guthrie. i think that album deserves to be updated and heard by more people. i think there's a certain unfair stigma attached to it because of it's age.

Yeah, that's a good point. Newcomers especially tend to hear the the later albums as their introduction to CT, and I think it comes as a bit of a shock to them when they hear the early stuff as it is very different (much as I got a shock when they released Victorialand). I don't think the early albums are as accessible and to be honest they do sound a bit dated compared to the later albums.

I find it funny too...I never associated it with angst....certainly on the surface some of it seems dark and 'gothic' in one common use of that word...but I never personally felt any angst motivated by it. Though I too am less often in the mood for it. Dark music rarely gets me down, Garlands in particular is energizing and stimulating, and in addition I always connect a rather dreamy almost mystical feeling to it, when I am in that mood.

Why? It's just what other people like to listen to....really it means nothing to you, IMO. Oddly enough, FCC is right up there for me, but I did vote Victorialand...heh. Frankly, it mostly bugs me when people air their grudge against an album or song because others are expressing their affection for it. i know it took a long while for me to warm up to it.
much like M&K, it's a somewhat uneven affair in terms of consistency, and yet it still may contain 4 or 5 of the band's greatest songwriting moments.

BBK was my gateway drug. It was my first CT disc; I worked (essentially) backward from there, getting Garlands and HOH last (HOLV & rest were not recorded yet). I now believe their first two records are gorgeous and stunning, but suspect if I'd heard these first they may have been too 'hard core' for me. TREASURE TREASURE TREASURE
The first CT album I bought and still the best by far. When I think I know every second a bit comes along that's completely new to me. I don't play it that often any more because I never want to get tired of it. But it's the most played CT album in my LP/CD cabinet. The fact that not many people on this forum like it much is something that will never cease to amaze me because to me Treasure defines Cocteau Twins. Every other album pales in comparison. The only one that gets remotely close is Victorialand.

And I LIKE that drum machine dammit!
Heh...that's cool...as with my comments above, I'd also say I think it is possible a good many people here do like Treasure quite well,....sure it isn't the most popular...I think it is good in its own way, I recognize why some people like and dislike certain aspects of it, overall I am quite glad to have it and listen to parts of it quite often. To be honest, I'm not such an album oriented person myself. I like the concept, especially when it works well, but otherwise I more often focus on songs. If I ranked songs most listened to, a few tracks on Treasure would be high on the list...my favorite is Aloysius. Though Beatrix is a close 2nd.
I think the drum machine thing is a matter of taste, I do find the drum tracks have an appeal at times, which I find mostly in Robin's work even though I don't care for the drum samples. Robin always impressed me with how he used whatever he had, this approach appealed to me from the start. But it isn't snobbery or anything, I can dig dated sounding stuff, really...with the drums on Treasure, I find certain timbres in the snare abrasive to my ear...could be worse, they probably gave it alot of help in the mix to not be so cutting...but that's just how it feels to me.
Oh yeah, also I was going to mention the age/culture aspect....I can't share the nostalgia with those who listened to Treasure at the time it came out....not that is a dominant factor, but it does make some difference I think....
treasure doesn't define cocteau twins.
if it did this forum wouldn't exist.
It defines CT to me. &Without Treasure I probably would never have gotten into them.

don't get me wrong, i love treasure....it just doesn't define their sound for me. actually, i'd be hard pressed to name one album that defines their sound simply because i find each of their releases quite different.

Hi Leesa,
Was just commenting on the general opinion of the British Music Press when it came to describing the Cocteau's sound. Most of the music press here seem to think it represents what Cocteau Twins are all about, all floaty and ethereal...they could not be more wrong. When I saw them at the glasgow barrowlands they fucking rocked :guitar: I would most certainly not use Treasure as an introduction to a Cocteau virgin.
Love, milk and kisses xx.

Agreed, but LET is the one CT song that I want to have remixed, to bring some brightness and clarity to it.

that's another kick ass track.
too bad not too many have heard it.
yeah, I don't like the washed out sound of LET...I wish Robin would remaster that EP...
I agree. Beautiful songs, terrible production. The treble is distorted and the bass is very weak and muddy
