View Full Version : Cocteau Twins Guitar Tabs - OFFICIAL TATE TABS INCLUDED
Does anyone have/collect CT guitar tabs? A few are floating out in cyberspace, but no one has really stepped up to the plate.
Any members interested in putting together a CT Guitar Tab Lab (CTGTL)?
Our moderator's proposed "definitive collector's list" has inspired me to create a tab counterpart for the guitarists out there
:)

great idea andy!
you may want to contact steve jones(sjones@wilmingt.gannett.com) he did some of the tabs for this website.
here are a few links to cocteau twins tabs online:

Thanks for the great start mmmender.
Steve is missing in action -- email address is no longer valid. If you have any other contact info, please pass it along.

andy, sorry but that's the only email address i have for steve....perhaps someone here has a more recent email address for him? anyway i think this is a fab idea and i'll do whatever i can to help you out with it.
are you planning on printing out the final version when you're done or are you making this a web based project?
it'd actually be nice to have something printed and bound -- but that's assuming that the tabs are as accurate as possible.
As for offering a helping hand, much thanks.
Might you have any friends of friends of friends who may have been involved with CT in a guitar tech and/or recording capacity?Shedding some light on how Guthrie achieved specific sounds/textures/efx, etc. (in addition to the tabs) would be extra special and worthy of publication!
Best,
Andy
Almost missed this thread in the midst of mmmender's server woes, sorry mmmender, I know how frustrating that can be...
---
anyhow, I'd love to see what you are describing as well Andy.
...I've worked on a few tabs, I attempted to list some effects but only as a vague guesses, so you'd likely disregard them...only a few points I mention the delay time to get pulsing with the beats in that tempo..., I didn't think any of my suggestions sounded like the original...if you'd like to see them they can be downloaded from my tab collection (http://24.31.224.53:8888/tab) which is presently just a handful of tunes...I tried to work out song structure in some cases...rather incomplete and/or interpretive thus not something I am presenting to anyone as well you know., the songs are:
Whales Tales(part)
Oomingmak
The Itchy Glowbo Blow(part)
I wear your Ring
Wolf in the Breast
Road River and Rail(part)
Seekers who are Lovers(with bass)
I did these last year when I was newer to CT on the whole and still a bit naive about the effects, but I knew then I was unsure just exactly HOW to get that sound :)
If you can't hit that, just send me a Private message and I can email em...corrections needed and welcome.
PS -
Oh yeah, another thought about publishing something detailing RG's guitar fx techniques seems unlikely as he seems somewhat private about it and more importantly is more about experimenting than analytical methods..if that is possible..I just suspect he has less of a preconceived method and more of a style he's developed by ear...so for publication, it seems either inaccessible or not likely to be made public....I hope I'm wrong

just thought i'd bring this thread back to the surface again. i'm actually interested in finding out if someone has every transcribed any cocteau material for piano? anybody? anyone?

I was rather obsessed with playing Pink Orange Red not too long ago on the piano but I haven't written anything down if that's what you mean (it's not too faithful anyway).
Other songs I've tried to play on the piano with varying degrees of success: From the Flagstones, Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops, Ivo, Carolyn's Fingers, Heaven or Las Vegas, Half-Gifts, Calfskin Smack, Alice.

Are you a fellow pianist? Hmm, I do actually have an ancient program that I can use to write sheet music. I can work on Pink Orange Red for now. It's the only one that sounds good to me so far.
The things I'll do for anyone who knows the Cocteau Twins exist!
Glad you chose to resurrect this thread, I'd like to see some transcriptions too; I'm working with a band presently that I think could definitely handle some CT material.
It's a band in Alabama (of all places) that has a nice studio and all of the members are quite technically proficient with the technologies involved. I've never worked with a group of musicians better suited for tackling my favorite band. I'm really hoping we can add some CT to our repertoire soon.
I'm in the process of doing my Cocteau proselytizing, still have to find the song that will make believers out of them...
I would think we could transcribe whatever tunes we work up, hope to have more to add here soon.
So, are there many more musicians lurking around here?
I've been listening to Musette's 'Cold Heaven' tracks this morning, they are quite nice.
Should I start a thread to see who has musical projects going?
I'd love to see some input from anyone who's been covering CT material.

I have guitars and I play them. I have even played in some bands. Lately I've been playing on my computer with Reason. But I certainly would not consider myself a musician. Though I know there are others on the board that are. That all being said I too would be interested in any transcriptions of ctblue songs for guitar and/or piano. Personally the guitars have always been my favorite component of the Twins.
Cheers,

Excellent idea! I think we could share our drafts in this forum, to be corrected each other. Certaily there is a lack of good CT tabs. It would be a dream if Simon or Robin could correct!
In fact I've got a doubt with Pink Orange Red. According Jason Baxter, in the chorus there are next chords:
e - 4 - 4 - 3 -
B - 4 - 4 - 4 -
G - 5 - 5 - 5 -
D - 6 - 6 - 5 -
A - 6 - 6 - 3 -
E - 4 - 6 - x -
That's when Liz sings:
"Mel - iteae phoe - bus hyala phoe - bus hyala clo - eyessa"
and lately:
"Hymeae sat - umia - hymeae noss - inussa"
(BTW, what a beautiful, sublime text, and song!). Well, it sounds accurate, except second chord, that is also impossible to play with a five-finger left hand! Some suggestion/opinion?
ScottL, I couldn't connect to: http://24.31.224.53:8888/tab
Mmmender, you can transcribe whatever you want with a program to write music, like NoteWorthy, Melody Assistant or something similar, if you use Windows. There are loads of midis in the net, from where you can get the respective scores.
Yeah my address changed since...my page is listed current in my user profile here...the link is now:

I can work on more songs...esp if someone gets the ball rolling....and some of mine need corrections or finishing...feedback welcome

Thanks for sharing that.
BTW, I am always interested in sharing tabs, and I've done so here before, but I'm sure the link is buried deep...I have a page with a few CT songs I did. I welcome corrections or comments, I may have got parts wrong, or excessively detailed, I may make simplified chord w/tab fragments type of version for each one as well. For now they are fairly verbose..
here is the link:

The songs I did were:
Beatrix(bass and guitar)
Whales Tails(part)
Oomingmak (not quite right)
The Itchy Glowbo Blow(part)
I Wear Your Ring
Wolf In The Breast
Road River and Rail
Seekers Who Are Lovers(bass and guitar)

Does anyone know the tabs for HOLV
The chorus is D G D G
Just can't work out the chords for the chorus
mmmender
Nov-10-04, 11:41 AM
do a forums search for guitar tabs and you're sure to find other threads that contain tabs. if none of them have HOLV you'll definitely find links to cocteau tab sites. hopefully you'll find what you're looking for there.
Didn't see this till now, here is what I came up with over lunch...general harmony and a few melodic fragments...I can looked it over better tonight..
Intro/Verse
Bass is doing some chords formed from triads of these chords(ie. no 7s)
Dmaj7 Gmaj7
E ---9----------------2-------------------------
B -----10---------------3-----------------------
G --------11--------------4---------------------
D -----------12-------------5-------------------
A ----------------------------------------------
E ----------------------------------------------
Over the chorus, the following chords harmonize
(but aren't necessarily being played on one guitar in the song):
D C Gmaj13(2 bars)
E --0-------0------0----------------------------
B --7-------7------3----------------------------
G --7-------7------4----<or>--------------------
D --7-------7------4----------------------------
A --5-------------------------------------------
E ----------8------3----------------------------
Of course you can do Gmaj7 or just the triad...
Over this there is a pattern playing(in that fuzzy sound):
(let ring)
E -----------0---------0--------------0---------
B ---7---7-----------------7--------------------
G --------------7--7-------------7--------------
D -----------------------------------------------
A ----------------------------------------------
E ----------------------------------------------
Then for the bridge, I like these chords, for fitting the overall harmony,
Emin7 F#min7 Amin7 Gmaj7
E --------------------(10)-----(0)--------------
B --5--------7---------8--------7---------------
G --7--------9---------9--------7---------------
D --5--------7---------7--------5---------------
A ----------------------------------------------
E ----------------------------------------------
The notes in paren's are extra, included sometimes...didn't workout the fuzz tone part that goes over this after the vocals...

Thanks Scott. You're a star
Thanks. I enjoy working on these, and tend to get motivated when there is other interest. I always liked studying music theory and applying it to music I like...for me what I like(eg. Cocteau Twins) comes first, and theory is just a way of figuring out the mechanics of it. I started working out Squeeze Wax for fun.
I updated my HoLV tabs (worked out the fuzztone lead/guitar solo and corrected mistakes), here:
HoLV Tabs (http://65.30.16.149/tab/HeavenOrLasVegas.txt)
And I put on my tab page
I found the bass more fun to work out on Squeeze Wax, so I did it first, it is located here:
Squeeze Wax(BASS) (http://65.30.16.149/tab/BASS_SqueezeWax.txt)

I play some music including some guitar, but have no idea how to read tabs, can anyone recommend any guide?...or have some notation?
Well I can try to help...
Here are two that sum up ASCII tab(using simple text to make tab), this is what I do..
http://www.cryptnet.net/music/guitar/read-tab.html
http://www.guitartricks.com/tab.shtml
Here is one that describes it in general, as it might appear in guitar magazines and commercial tab books:
http://guitar.about.com/library/blhowtoreadtab.htm
Searching Google with a phrase like "how to read guitar tab" finds for those and more...tends to be alot telling you most the same stuff....
Generally the time flows from left to right, and the notes are written for each string vertically by fret numbers. So a chord looks like a stack of numbers on top of eachother...whereas melodies will go up and down from left to right....
In my tab, I tend to write out the beat count over the bars, eg.:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
That would be for 4/4...counting out the eighth notes in between on the & sign...helps me keep things in place when you have tricky rhythms...some tabs don't really tell you rhythm, so you go from left to right fingering the notes and listen to the music and try to figure out the timing your self...
hope that helps.
Also, I put up the Squeeze Wax guitar on my tab page(link is somewhere in my first post on this thread) as well..
I worked out the Bass Tab to "Smile" last night...tried a different approach...worked it out in MIDI and generated TAB with a program...just testing it...I offer the MIDI too...

I have a back-issue of UK mag TOTAL GUITAR from May 1996, which features an interview with Robin about his guitar technique, etc. and includes musical notations for "Amelia," "Heaven or Las Vegas" and "Violaine," along with an audio CD with recorded samples.
I'm trying to put together a guitar/music section for www.cocteautwins.com that archives as much of this information as possible, to give as much focus to the musicianship as we often give to Liz's lyrics and the like. This will be included.
For now, here are scans of the musical notations.
To hear the audio, follow these links (or right click and choose "Save Target As" to download):

Here is the second scan.

i don't have them; however, when i wanted to learn "kaini industries" by boards of canada or "Xmd5a" by aphex twin, i simply extracted the cd audio to my hard drive, and slowed them down by half, so that i could teach myself the melodies by ear. bob's yer uncle, m8.
Try these two threads: Thread One (http://%3Cbr%20/%3E%0Ahttp://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/showthread.php?t=702) Thread Two (http://www.cocteautwinsforums.com/showthread.php?t=3292) (UNAVAILABLE - MERGED WITH THIS THREAD)
Not sure if they have exactly the ones you're looking for, but all sorts of links and stuff for tabs.

I wanted to add. Any tab's I've shared in the past is over my cable modem....once every year or two the address changes....I don't really want a name hosting anyway. But as is, I don't mind sharing, my latest address is always updated in my user profile...from there you can get to tabs by typing the same folder name.

If anyone is insterested in a Wax and Wane (Garlands) tab, that's what I found in a website...
Personnaly I'm not convinced it's the right way to play it but to use arpeggios for this song is not stupid at all!
Wax And Wane Tab by Cocteau Twins, www.Ultimate-Guitar.Com
Wax and Wane - written by Cocteau Twins
produced by Cocteau Twins/Ivo © 1983.
Transliterated by Jason Baxter Jan 2001.
Note that this tab is made up of three basic riffs which are repeated
several times in the song; so the tab below consists of these four
riffs and then a schedule (with lyrics) of when to play them.
