i have an idea.........cocteau twins down deep!
i was thinking it might be a good idea to focus on one cocteau twins recording for a really in-depth discussion. for example, let's say we start with garlands and work our way up. we could post our personal reviews, concert photos, music journal reviews, links on others reviews, lyrical interpretations, equipment/recording techniques, collectors notes on the varying garlands releases/versions, comments, photos taken during that period....you name it. then when we've completed exhausted the recording we move on to the next.
whaddya think?

blood bitch
blood woman
blood bitch
there's a corona
a corona swelling.
pressing hands against this scar
there's no warmth, there's no warmth to be felt.
don't damage my altar, don't damn this cold flame.
neither one or the other has much form or shape.
cold burns powerful, has powerful needs, holds back
what's my worth?
there's a fire, i'll paint the blood bitch, the blood bitch black.
lift or carry us, you're the same old song.

wax and wane
carrying prose
broke my real friend
the devil bites dirty, we wax and we wane
the devil bites dirty, we wax and wane(x4)
licking our wounds
the devil bites dirty
reckoning we'll taste
we wax and we wane
the devil bites dirty, we wax and wane(x4)
caring is a bury gin shot
the devil bites dirty
up to the wee wanes
oh, we laugh in their faces
the devil bites dirty, we wax and wane(x8)

This was mentioned in the "misprint" thread, but it'll fit here now too.....I checked my cd and found that Hearsay Please and Hazel (from the Peel Sessions section) are in each others respective spots. Does this occur on the re-release of the UK cd as well?

My wife now has a black belt in the ancient art of Ignora Lawtongai....3rd dan, in fact. My kids just tune out when I start...think I should change my tack? Should I buy a cardigan and start smoking a pipe, while spouting pearls of philosophy like "There's many a fine tune played on an old chestnut"?
Not while I have my strength.
......can someone post some more reviews? it was mentioned that garlands was welcomed to "lukewarm " praise.i'd like read a few more....and it took, what, a week to record? any body have anything more on that?
was it during this period that liz went from the long mohawk to the liz we know? how were they as a band at that point? were the cracks starting to show? will left shortly there after, right?
and was it during this time liz did the disapearing act...''
this period is interesting to me beacause this is the chrysalis stage of of the band that became the Cocteau Twins.
i need more!!

Quite simply and truthfully, their BEST ever album IMO
(as I've said many a time ;) )
Reminds me of:
The discovery/excitement
The beginning of my deep passion
When Liz became a pen-pal
When I realised how very important and relevant music is to me as a person

I know there are different opinions about this album. I know some people is a Garlands fiend (hi Replicess! eh eh) and some other bought it just to complete the CT collection, listened to it the first time, and forgotten it. When i bought it, 6-7 years ago, i was not mad about it, i found it too "rotten"... At the beginning of my CT adventure i was just addicted to their dreampop side, from Blue Bell Knoll and ahead. I never liked early works (only Sugar Hiccup was sometimes on my hifi), and i hated the drum session in every song.
...I was BLIND folks!...
Months after, i began to consider things like Aikea-Guinea, Treasure, The Spangle Maker... and finally HOH and i found them amazing! I thought that maybe earlier i was not READY, my ears was not ready to "welcome" that kind of sounds.
When i finally liked all the works, i tried with Garlands, and only in this year i completely discovered it. Some people told me (my brother also, he loaths CT): "what's this!? oh, if i want to hear sounds like this, The Cure's PORNOGRAPHY is a better one!" I don't believe... Now i can understand and appriciate Garlands, and, it's true it is not my fave one, but finally i consider it a CT album as well as HOLV. So often in these days i feel "gothic" eh eh, and no doubts on my hifi Garlands is playing!
It took me 6 years to full appriciate it, and only now i feel complete!
So that was my personal story about Garlands.

Garlands (with Peel sessions and 2 songs) was released under license from 4AD in 1995 by Sonic (SON 60).
Review from music magazine called Tylko Rock (Only Rock).
The first record of the Cocteau Twins had many opponents in 1982. Instumental background created by unconventional played guitar, deep bass and drum machine was too raw, too ascetic, and vocalist Elizabeth Fraser was accused of singing out of tune sometimes.
Nevertheless there was also a lot of enthusiasts. They liked unusual, hypnotic climate which leveled trio's lack of technical abilities. And simple accompaniment was also accepted in punk rock era.
Yet those, who saw Cocteau Twins as an important band on British music scene, were right.

i'm not that technical when it comes to this board, but one question before the garlands thread is closed, we should have a poll for each release to find out what the favorite song is from each album/ep. for me, it would be a toss up between 3, blind dumb deaf, blood bitch, and hazel from the peel sessions tacked on...this way we can have the fan's best of compilation at the end
Heh..I think that sounds cool...it is almost as if we need a poll section chocked full of poll threads...we do get carried away now don't we....but...trying to think more practical...hmm...perhaps we could tack the poll on to each deepthroat thread.....(now say that 5 times fast with out laughing)....but that may be cool in the end, because you could search the archives for deepthroat as a thread title to get all of the album/ep threads we made, each with polls, commentary and info...
just thinking out loud...
ok

oooh, i knew there was something about garlands here =]
one thing i was thinking about that a month before this album came out, another album was released that had a similar vibe and tone ... the cure's pornography. both utilize minimal playing/composing to convey a dark and brooding atmosphere. but while pornography is very upfront and explicit (haha), garlands is more brittle and its mood seems like it oxidizes the moment you open it. this is not said in bad judgment; that's more descriptive of how i hear the mood.
while it does anticipate the wall of sound and the talents of all three members (even though will heggie would go on to do other things), it is cool to hear the band as a band with everyone in their roles: liz on vocals, will on bass and robin doing everything else. as far as the production, yeah it could have been better if the band had more control over it but it works for what it was at the time. and in a way, it makes the album really unique in the span of the cocteau twins' career.
and some people may be turned off by its minimalism and repetition, i like it. maybe it's because i like some repetition when it's done right and especially when it helps encapsulate and communicate a mood. this one really does it and does it well.
all in all, i think it's an underrated album and it's just as cocteau twins as anything they have released since this one.
(and it's going to be twenty-five years old next year =] )
Hey Deej, what is this, 'revive-an-ancient-thread-day' ;-) ?
Anyway, it's good to read some opinions on this album.
I was initially disappointed by it because I came to CT later on in their career, but with the release of the remaster I rediscovered it, and now I loooove it! Blood Bitch and Grail Overfloweth are among my favourite CT tracks. That Heggie bloke could play himself some bass! F*cking hell! The opening moments of Blood Bitch immediately get the adrenaline flowing. The way Grail Overfloweth repeats and repeats is hypnotizing. It lasts for, like 5 minutes but still you want more when it's finished. Garlands, Wax And Wane, But I'm Not, all excellent stuff. The only one I skip sometimes is The Hollow Men which in my opinion doesn't quite measure up to the others.
Robin once mentioned that originally he had the volume of the rhythm box that they used turned up until it distorted into a much dirtier sound, but they got told they couldn't do that. It would be great to hear this album as Robin intended it, with distorted drums intact it would probably make even more of an impact.
This piece of garlands lyrics comes from the sleeve of the Garlands LP.
add, I hear just these songs in LP sleeve: <But I'm Not>、<Shallow then Halo>、<Garlands> and <Grail Overfloweth>
Wax and Wane was in 1996 Capitol's promo CD <Cocteau Twins Collector Disk KRBE 104>

the re master of garlands has the misprint "blood bath" instead of "blood bitch" on the uk first edition - does this occur on any any editions ?
leesa - i always thought the lyrics read " the devil rides steady we wax and wane "

I always thought it was "everyone's telling me wax and wane".
It's hard to shift an idea like that from your head once you've thought it for 20-odd years !
I've always thought it was "the devil lies dead and we wax & wane."

Another interpretation (from AlwaysOnTheRun.net)
The devil bites dirty
We wax and we wane
The devil might steady
We wax and wane
Suffice to say, Wax & Wane is a disturbing song. ...Well, it disturbs me.
With Wax And Wane i sing:
"The devil may study me wax and wane..."
It took me a while to appreciate Garlands when i first got it, but i now listen to it as frequently as any other recording of theirs.

I wish there was some way of hearing Garlands with the drums sounding the way Robin hoped, all distorted and gnarly. Maybe something like the My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts website, where a couple of the tracks are available broken down into individual tracks for mucking about with?
wax and wane.......i've always heard it as
"the devil bastard in me wax and wane"
"the devil boy is telling me to wax and wane"

I've been singing more like:
"The devil make steady we wax and wane"
but I now like: "the devil lies dead and we wax and wane"
there definitely seems to be an "s" in there.

I like that take on it. I remember thinking it was "...the Devil-Boy's stabbing me..."
